Modevia hosts us as a gift, lets not waste bandwidth

Post by C-Fan »

I love these forums.

Lets not forget though, that these forums are being hosted for free by modevia, people who don`t even footbag. These forums are their biggest account in terms of space we take up.

I remember when Pinkus started the experiment thread. He wanted to see how the post counters worked on the forum. But even after the counter reset, the thread kept going because it was silly fun.

I like silly fun, and I like killing time, but I think that lately there have been way too many pointless threads. If we owned the forums, I wouldn`t have a problem with it. But we don`t. So I feel a little guilty that we are sucking up so much bandwidth with such pointless shit.

Some of these threads are pointless but fun (word association), while others aren`t even really clever. I just ask that we show our appreciation to modevia by cutting back on the pointless threads.

Yeah that's a good call - I often think about that. I guess single topics are very small though. Still there's no need for too much foolishness. A little bit is ok but lots gets frustrating too.

This was a pointless thread. It wont stop Sam from creating pointless threads- chances are he wont even read this one ;) But really, threads like these don't really take up too much bandwidth, do they?

I don`t mind people starting pointless threads. I just want people to think before they post in them. The word association thread is at the least interesting, whereas the "we are footbag" thread... seriously, its not clever, its predictable, and its pointless. People just post in it like sheep.

I`ve definitely been guilty of mindlessly posting, but I came to the realization the other day that modified is a privelege, and not a right, and that its not worth it for me to waste generous peoples bandwidth (money) just cause Im bored. When I came to that realization, I decided to stop posting in blatantly pointless threads. I started this thread on the off chance that it would make other people stop for a second and at least be aware of what they are doing when they post in pointless threads.

Just one of your gargantuan blog posts wastes more bandwidth than the entire length of the we are footbag thread.

-a good way to save bandwidth is to delete all the old posts that get knocked down off the first page.    :!: :!: :!:

Despite what they may say at Iona, removing old posts would probably save minimal bandwidth (superficially) and cause quite a bit of inconvenience.

Tell you what would save space. deleting all the members who havent posted in a year or so. Then can we make crappy threads?

Seriously to be clear on something.

Bandwidth is how much data is being transferred over the internet. Which is opposed to how much data is stored on the server. Topics that nobody looks at anymore, accounts that are inactive etc. are all things that don't take up any bandwidth at all.

Having given this some more thought, I think the silly topics are ok.

In my opinion the only thing modified really achieves is helping to build friendships - I don't see the endless discussion about footbag theory or the bragging about what people can hit etc. as actually achieving anything physical.

Perhaps very occasionally something beyond friendship is achieved - but that's very rare.

I say "only thing modified really achieves" but I really think it's the most important thing too. I think if I didn't make friends on modified I wouldn't post here.

Now I know a lot of people on this forum take it very seriously and that's cool too. For me personally if you take away the fun of the forum you take away the forum.

i dont do this too often, but i have to play the semantics game here for a second. lets start with the definition of forum

fo·rum Audio pronunciation of "forum" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (fôrm, fr-)
n. pl. fo·rums, also fo·ra (fôr, fr)

1.
1. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.
2. A public meeting place for open discussion.
3. A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program.
2. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.
3. A court of law; a tribunal.

now what is the re-occuring theme here? OPEN DISCUSSION.

I believe that the words "silly" and "pointless" are subjective, so it has no bearing on whether the threads belong on modified or not.

the fact is, modified is a forum, and a forum is for open discussion. to stifle open discussion by putting limitations on posting is to in essence destroy all that modified is. and all it is, is a forum.

~NEL~

p.s. i do believe that stopping future drug topics is acceptable as parents do read this, but unless its illegal, there is no reason people cant talk about it here. if modevia was having a problem with the bandwidth, dont you think that they would say something to a mod? and then they would subsequently let the community know?
