How do you spin?
I was wondering how many other people notice that there is two style of spinning.
1. The bag passes outside the shoulder. Used by Lon, myself, Chan
2. The bag passes under the extended arm. Used by Red, Eddnie, Moran
Both seem to have their advantages. It seems like more people fit into catigory one but I've only recently started checking for it. Maybe a combination of both is best? Thoughts comments?

It's kind of weird for me.
On strongside it passes outside my shoulder (I tuck my arms in) while on flipside it passes under extended arm. I also find that on strongside I start turning my upper body before i've set the bag and also hold the bag as long as possible. On my flipside I do a really quick set and then turn my entire body at once.
I've been trying for a while now to fix my flipside because i keep setting the bag into my arm. Especially for gyro moves like gyro mirage/legover.

Hahaha! It's SOOO awesome to be categorized with these awesome players!
Thanks Nate!
I'm not sure I understand what you mean, though. I understand how Dan Ednie spins with the bag under his arms, but I just flipped through some Ricky and Red footage and they both seem to spin "regularly" too. Although I can remember seeing Red spin with his arms up and when I was watching Ricky notcied that the bag did pass under his arms quite a bit, but overall I think the only "oddball" here is Dan ;p
Is it a super subtle difference you mean? Or is it just that the player's arms happen to be raised up above bag-level when they spin? Oh -- so are you talking about the actual spin, or the arms during the spin? I'm not sure I'm clear about what you mean.

I spin a lot, and it passes on the outside for me. I just watched Ricky and Justins section to fourkast, where ricky has that spinning/ducking run, and it does pass under his arms. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm talking about both the arm extension and where you spot the bag. If you spot the bag outside the shoulder thats one type and if you spot the bag under the armpit thats another type. I was flipping through some lon footage (CSS6) and noticed that on gyro whirls and gyro barages he does the under arm thingy.
I aree its easiest to tell with ednie. The only time I see red do it is in relaxed sessions where hes throwing gyro clips and spining clips. In all his movie stuff hes busting mobiuses and scorpions tails so its hard to tell, or he may just have a different set for different moves? Moran spins so quick its hard to tell with him but I think I remember him doing the extended arm thing for easy spins.

Justin Dale used to do the accentuated under the arm spin like Ednie. When I think of Red's/Ricky's spins, I think of them as big arms during the stall, and then pulling the arms in as you spin. I don't think either of them spin with the bag setting under the arm like Ednie very often. *will watch footage and double check* A good example of someone who spins like that is Aaron Orton.

matt cross is a good example of spinning with the bag out of the arm, watch him do a spinning osis, any time. the bag is usually like a foot from his body during the spin and he totally glues his arms to his side during the spin, i try to do that when i spin but im still learning

I suck at spinning, but from a pure physics point of view, it takes less work to spin with your arms tucked in because there is less inertia. I would say Lon is without question one of the best spinners in the world. Without really watching someone do it though, I can't say that under the arm wouldn't work just as well (since that may happen before the spinning actually starts?).
Peace.

And for what's even worse, your ass. Though this happens me rarely in spinning tricks, mostly when hitting osis. It's really annoying.Shredster wrote:Or even worse, hits in the back. Nothing annoys me most when the bag hits me in the back. I notice the bag passes outside my shoulder.
I spin like the 34 other voters (so far 34).
