Well maybe if anyone wants to go further into the discussion they should start a new thread or PM me...

@sorin: You're somehow right, but for me, the main question is not if a footbag forum is the right place to talk about drugs, but if the admins should censor/ban because of that. I'd personally say it ain't really the right place, but I'd rather not censor/ban

No, no censorship, just want people to think about possible consequences before posting, I don't really care what people do at home, just don't pass bad things to others

Hopefully it's the image that most accurately represents our community. We shouldn't need to resort to tricking people into playing our sport.

sorin wrote:There are some very young people on this forum who could get the wrong idea, that drugs are a part of footbag.
Drugs aren't a part of footbag, but they most definitely are a part of the footbag community whether people are comfortable with it or not. I honestly feel that if a parent happens on a pot or other drug discussion and consequently donsen't want her child participating in our sport, than that child shouldn't be participating. That's the parent's job. If that potential player is young or immature enough to still be bound by his parents rules, than who are we to interfere with a parents role by trying to alter the truth. That's what I call irresposible. When someone comes out to a tournament do you know what they'll see? Us. Doing what we do. Playing footbag, having fun, hanging out, and as I've seen in just about every tournament I've been to: doing drugs. Love it or hate it, it's the reality.

So anyway, if people want to change the image we put out, rather than trying to stop people from discussing or advocating drugs, anyone who disagrees should speak up and give their opinions when a statement like that is made. That will show a much truer representation of our community. And to take it a step further, if it's really that important to you and it really does offend you, you could show a little backbone, get off the forum, and bring it up when you see it in person or at a tournament. Another common thing I've noticed about footbaggers is that we are a very accepting and responsive group, and I doubt anyone would bite your head off for voicing your concerns. Making change happen goes beyond simply talking about it

I should also comment on the whole harder drugs issue, since I was one of the original people who made a comment on them. Separating them as something not to be discussed is ridiculous. They exist, and they do affect us, and constructive discussion about them could be very important in keeping people safe from them. Believe me, if I saw someone advocating heroine or cocaine on the forum, I would be the first to tell them how wrong I think they are. That's imporant. I haven't been on the forum much at all lately, but I searched for words like heroine, cocaine, crack etc. and I didn't find much disscussion at all (besides this topic of course), and what I did see was mostly negative. The closest I found to a positive reference was that heroine is a hallucinogen that puts you in a dreamlike state to which I reponded that it wasn't a hallucinogen at all. Discussion is important, otherwise stoners who are into less dangerous drugs like hallucinogens might think they could get a better trip off something like heroine :? .

Also, just a so people don't feel so shocked and/or apalled....

I was there, and no one at this party shot anything up or smoked any crack. There were some people invited over who shouldn't have been there, but as far as I remember they didn't arrive until after any of the underaged people had already left and only one or maybe two of the people remaining there didn't already know them

yeah to be clear - I think what the attitude is towards drugs on the forum is that drug talk is allowed - especially if it's informative. But things like posting a picture of your bong or a topic encouraging people to write about their best acid experience are frownd upon. I don't think such topics would be locked - just many people on the forum (including myself) would prefer it if they didn't happen.

In all honesty I do drugs beyond marijuana occasionally and having given it some thought - I would probably do any drug if I knew enough about it (and what I knew made it sound alright). However I don't see that as something I need to constantly talk about - or even talk about a little. I guess given a choice between doing drugs or playing footbag or meeting up with some anti-drug friends - I would always choose footbag or the anti-drug friends over doing drugs.

I also feel that it would be very irresponsible for me to preach the benifits of drugs. I'm very careful about my drug use - I read about what I'm doing and I make sure I can trust the person I'm getting the drugs off and that I'm in a safe environment. I also do drugs very irregularly and make sure that I wait for some period of time before doing more - in an effort not to let myself get addicted. In the last 3 months I think I've done drugs once. However were I to encourage somebody else to do drugs I can't garauntee that they would take the same approach as me - or that they would make the same judgements - or how they would react. That's not something I want to be responsible for.

It's also about social acceptability. Drugs are not socially acceptable and despite my own personal feelings on that - I don't want to encourage socially unacceptable behaviour. I guess I look at this issue in regards to my objective views - rather than my personal views. Which in these circumstances vary quite a bit. I feel that in positition on the forum I have an obligation to be responsible for my actions and for what I write - I guess an obligation to set a good example. I would hope that people could follow that example.

Being gay isn't necesarily "socially acceptable" either but I doubt you'd stop anyone from talking about their lifestyle on Modified, granted it was in the right section and all. So what's the difference then between talking about someone whose lifestyle includes hard drugs and someone whose lifestyle includes being gay, seeing as you've made it clear that you, personally, don't mind talking about either.

Whatever, I'm gonna go score some heavenly DC cocaine.

Being gay is a right that is protected in most of the countries represtented on this forum - if not all. Taking drugs is something that is illegal in most of the countries represented - if not all.

I also think it's important in many situations to think beyond your own personal thoughts and ideas and look for what is best for everybody. I try and be objective and not let my own personal bias effect my judgement. So if I do or do not like talking about homosexuality, drugs or anything else does not effect my thoughts on if they should be discussed at modified or not. My opinion is only my own opinion and it would be unfair of me to impose it upon anybody else.

Cool how you roll over to laws even if you disagree with them. Now go sit in the back of the bus with the rest of the Australians.

And as I talked about on page 2 of this thread (Like 2 months ago), it is not illegal for someone to discuss smoking weed or snorting blow or injecting any drug into your blood system. Thus legality has nothing to do with this topic, and legality does not imply acceptability either. Even if it were to, the general concensus on modified (As everyone has made evident numerous times in this thread alone) is that drugs are somewhat nuetral, and everyone is only scared of portraying the wrong image of Footbag... Even though it is the correct image.

I'd also say (il)legality ain't important at all.
In germany it's illegal to feed ducks; shall this be any argument for not wanting online discussions about it ?
Does anybody not like to see a discussion on "duck feeding" on mod. ?
Take the world (and the footbag community as a part of it) as it is, don't try to put it in a good light

I don't know if this has been brought up, but what about modified talk on drugs. Woah, that'd be trippy.

I was there, and no one at this party shot anything up or smoked any crack.
Everything is relative. Some people who think marijuana is ok think cocaine and heroine are taboo. Others are cool with alcohol, but marijuana is not cool. Some are cool with water, but kool-aid is...j/k.

I don't like the drugs at the afterparty in everyone's fuckin grill. Especially if the host is the one with the drugs, in which case it isn't so easy to grow this backbone and tell them what to do with their own hotel room.

A good time for making new friends and motivating newbs to get more into the sport is when everyone's chilling after the tournament/jam. I don't think it's a good idea to alienate them with the drugs.

Like I said b4 though, majority rules in most cases. If everyone there is cool with it, I'll bust out, and sometimes I take the people with me. (Thanks for ruining my tournament). If the majority is against it, the person or people will go off on their own in private, and have their addict fun.

Hey if it's at an afterparty, you can always pass and still hang out with the other footbaggers. At GRASS I passed a bunch and still hung out with all of the guys and had fun.

You know, it's REALLY interesting that I was drinking kool aid right when I read this.

But yeah, I'll drink, but I don't smoke pot. I'm not opposed to it or anything. I don't think drug talk on modified is really all that bad, I think the real issue is telling kids that doing drugs is okay because really, a lot of the posters on modified are not mature enough to be handling that kind of stuff. Myself included, I guess. I really oughta read this whole thread; I bet it's interesting. I'll do that tomorrow when I'm not super tired.

Damn why does this topic have to get so hot when I've been on the wagon for about 5 days now.

Shit I told myself I wouldn't be one of those people who brag about not doing drugs for a REALY short amount of time. I did turn down the offer of some smoke, with the help of a shred budy, but a turn down none the less.

I geuss you have to pick your posions. Now that I haven't been on cloud nine I've been spending more time at madthumbsdotcom  . I'm not sure witch is worse. hmmmmm not sure where I wanna go with this post.
sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Its all out there. Talking isn't doing. Doing and not talking isn't much better. Damn I was much more happy with my analogies on the train. Train wreck that is.

I'm sorry if you actualy read that. I think I spelled injured with a g in one of my posts. Sucks I can't blame drugs.

First to be clear - drug talk on modified is not banned - I think we've made that quite clear so you can talk about drugs as much as like if you really want. It's just discouraged. I see that as a major major difference. Also discussion such as "should drugs be legalised?" "Is herorin really bad for you" etc - are not discouraged at all. It's only topics like "post a story about the most trippy acid experience you've had" or "Go try speed now" that are discouraged. I'm sure you can see a compelling difference between those kinds of topics. I really think that Dan and Richard are taking a ridiculous stance on this topic - from what you say it sounds like you think that all drug talk on modified is banned. This is clearly not the case and I can only assume that I've either misinterpreted what you're trying to say or you haven't actually read the majority of posts from people in policy positions in this topic at all.

My personal opinion is this - I don't agree with the drugs laws in Australia, or in most of the countries represented on this forum. I don't even follow them. But they exist and I aknowledge they exist. I also am quite sure that there are plenty of laws in Australia that I agree with but other people don't agree with. I can't really find anyway of justifying that my opinion is any more "right" or "correct" than their opinions. Therefor I encourage all people to follow all laws regardless of if I do or not - because I see it as very irresponsible to try tell somebody to break a law. I mean who knows - I could be wrong and the law could be correct. In which case I'm attempting to make somebody do something that they "shouldn't" in an intrinsic sense of the word. I am happy to be responsible for my own actions and face the consequences of those actions. I am not happy to be responible for other peoples actions or see them face negative consequences for something that I have advocated. Therefor I publically discourage people from breaking the law. Talking about taking drugs is generally not a crime - although certainly liability could easily be argued if I say "go to acid" and somebody does and kills themselves and I could easily face prosecution for that in probably all the courts represented on this forum (although it's unlikely). But my discouragment of people encouraging illegal behaviour is beyond any legal ramifications, rather I feel that we should try our best within the system before we try and take the system apart. If there is something in the laws of your country you disagree with - be involved in politics. That's what politics is all about - deciding how your life will be run. It's silly to oppose something but not do anything about it. Why ignore a law when you've done nothing to change it? I think we all live in democracies - we all have the power to do something about the world we live in. The major problem as I see it in democracy is that so many people are apathetic to politics. These are decisions that have a direct relationship on your life - people should be involved.

Anyway that's just my opinion - it could be wrong - which is why I don't think drug talk should be banned - I'd just prefer it not to happen.

No, I just wanted to express, that topics like "Don't try speed now" should also be discouraged.
I'd want topics like "pro's and con's of XYZ"
