CIC Memories

Minnesota Jam - Juan moves away (2004)

Tim, Reile, Emily, and I take the 7 hours drive up to the twin cities for a farewell to Juan Rangel jam. Mike Strumpf, and Miles came up there too.

We met Juan at his apartment. It was near downtown Minneapolis. He lived with 3 chicks! "Come and knock on my door." We stayed there in his living room - all of us. Thax Juan, and thanks to ur chick roomates. There was this note on the fridge:
"Juan, please throw away your nasty old milk.
Love,
Roomies"

or something like that. Then scribbled on top was:
"I DO WHAT I WANT!"

That was some of the funniest shit I've ever seen. Considering Juan's chill temperament.

We go to kick across from the metrodome. Bijan and Cole (Cloud 9) come out as well. It was THE hottest sunniest day I've ever experienced playing footbag, and no shade around.

I remember Juan's warmup was a bunch of toe stalls, then clipper stalls. His clipper stalls were so weird. he didn't cushion them at all, yet they stalled perfectly and didn't bounce. He just put his foot out and the bag stalled perfect. I remember Reile playing really well, and Cole hitting a gyro/spinning rake.

We went to eat at this vegetarian, employee owned cafe just next to a Somolian village. I was not very open minded in terms of experiencing new food at this point, so I was a little scared, but it turned out pretty nice. Juan said it was his favorite place, so that sealed it for me.

The next day we walked around and kicked in front of some building in the downtown area. We came up on the weekend, and I noticed that the city was absolutely DEAD. There were no people anywhere. It seemed like the place was abandoned, but I suppose it could be that people don't go downtown on the weekend. We kicked for a long while. I remember Miles hitting some good shit, and the footbag falling in the fountain.

We then ate Thai food. We had a huge ass table for everyone to sit at. Everybody ordered a bunch of weird things.

We headed to Juan's apartment and sat out on the balcony. I had good talks with Cole and Bijan on Juan's balcony. I really like those guys. I remember really liking the architecture of Minneapolis. You could see alot of the downtown buildings from the balcony. After watching a funny ass episode of Mr. Show, we decided to walk toward the spotlights we saw in the sky. We walked and walked and walked. All through downtown. Eventually we got to an area that was flooded with people. I thought the place was dead, but at night, it came way alive. There was a bunch of hot chicks, and too many drunk fucks, and bad seeming people around. At the end of it all we arrived at the spotlights. We actually had walked all the way to them. We reached the end of the city. The spotlights were for stripclubs.

The next day we drove home, and it rained SO HARD. I was driving Emily's car. The road was curvy, and hilly. You could barely see. I was passing a truck and the water it spewed onto our windshield was as if someone was pouring buckets onto it. We were on a curvy road which dropped off on the side, and I couldn't see! I was afraid I'd go over the side, but i slowed down and the buckets of water ceased as the truck passed. I drove all the way home to Illinois, and then we drove more around the city (I think Reile took over).

I wish Zeke came. Good times. There are lots of holes in this story, so Emily, Reile, please add some if you like.

Oh man, I wouldn't have been able to remember the details like you did. Thanks so much for bringing old memories up again Tom. :) I don't know what else to add... Didn't it end up being a jam-sized group of people who ended up kicking near a train station or something where we kicked in the direct sunlight for hours? And was there a bus load of Spanish speaking people who came and watched for a while? I might be confusing two different trips. I remember that I ate a fruit granola yogurt dish at the restaurant and that we used fake names to order. Tom's was the best.

It was SOOO hot that day. I remember walking like half a mile with Bijan and Cole(maybe..) to try and find a place to buy a cold drink. We ended up having to go to a liquor store i think. So hot that day! Super fun shred though, I remeber that day as being some of the best footbag I've ever played :D .

One of the other moments from that trip i remember was on the drive up we pulled the car over in some random worthless area of wisconsin, and Tom, Emily, Tim, and Myself got out of the car and looked up and the stars completely covered the sky and they were totally all up in our grills. It was really late so too, so there was almost no traffic and it was practically silent out with no light. That was a good moment.

There was another moment from this trip which involved a truck stop restroom that I've repressed back *just* far enough that I won't repeat it here.... 8O <shudder>

Aside from curious, shammbly truck stop hanger-outers, this trip was the shit! It was awesome kicking with Juan as always, he busted reversius cleanly for my camera :D . Miles was really cool too, he makes every symposium mirage look like he going to throw in a few more dexes afterwards and then he lands and it was just symposium mirage :o , it looks really cool. He kind of looks like Richie i think. Strumf was a pimp as usual. He live in the same city as me now but for some reason I still never see him, I think it probably a combined effort of our respective reclusivenesses..... I'm trying to change that now though :D .

Anyway, It's always fun kicking with cloud 9, they're definitely some of the coolest and most luscious COC's around (Chicago Outer Circle).

Oh man! How could I have left the stop in Wisconsin out. That was such an awesome view. We kept looking at the sky through the window and decided to stop. So late at night, and no cars out. If the cops were to come, Reile said (in a really funny voice), "There's something wrong with our tire." Then we all stood out on the shoulder and stared at millions of stars. Maybe some of you know what that's like, but we don't see that everyday in Chicago. It was so beautiful.

Kamil and I kicked today. Yay! I haven't kicked in a while (few days), so I'm happy.

It's nice that Kamil wants to kick randomly and calls, and we do. We went to portage park by our houses. The lights were not on, so we kicked by the street at the entrance to the park. Then the street light went out over there; it was weird. It was a little dark, but okay. People watched a little. Some hot chicks jogged by.

Good sesh:

Kamil's atomic set has improved. I want to see that stepping set soo bad. Just "do it" (*said like starsky and hutch*). Practice it one day alot, then you'll have it.

I was feeling really good. Balanced. Felt like shoes were light and not a hinderance. Stalls and sets go where they're supposed to. I love that feeling in footbag. It doesn't happen all the time. It's like you're 15% better with no work. Everything is just easier.
I had this combo in my head all day, and I hit it: gyro pickup>pixie legover (all in one).

I got this off article called The 25 Best Running Cities in America:

--------------------------------------------

4. Chicago

You're in the Windy City, stuck without a running partner. Where to turn? Simple. The Chicago Area Runners Association's bulletin board on Cannon Drive, epicenter of this Midwestern-friendly running scene. "The etiquette says, if someone runs up to you and starts talking, you talk to them," says David Patt, CARA's CEO.

Near Lincoln Park, look for the Totem Pole—a popular runners' meeting place. The pole features a spear-wielding warrior.

After a Lincoln Park run, chow down at Nookies (1746 North Wells Street) on the giant omelets at this nearby haunt.

Look out for Chicago's "Hi Guy." He's run more than 130 marathons in sandals, but Tom Matti is best known for the T-shirt and cap he regularly wears. They say "Hi"—so do the same next time you see him.

Key Rankings: RW Poll: 2/Races

--------------------------------------------------

The Hi Guy!!!!!!!!!! Holy shit... so that's who that guy is. I used to see him at the beach with a sign attatched to a pole with a smiley face and "HI!" writen on it. We'd say hi as he walked/jogged by. Thats freakin cool. I have not seen him in a while... but then again I dont go to the beach as often as I used to.

Mike Hansen in Town
We all went up to Water Tower on Michigan Avenue. There were so many people walking by (lots of HOT chicks, hard to focus). So many kickers came. We had three circles most of the time! Tim and Reile BOTH came! I really like kicking with the peeps that came out. You know how you have more fun kicking with certain people? I had so much fun kicking with Mike Hansen and Eric Siegel, and all my CIC pimps who have been on sabbatical. And Nathan and JEROME...Comic geniuses! Barbara was a nice surprise as well. Josh and Jacob raye came out. First time I've seen them at a jam in years.

We were there for 7 hours. We met these 2 Navy guys who knew about freestyle and played with us. This young girl asked Mike and I about footbag, and she seemed genuinely, innocently interested (innocently = never has even seen hacking b4). Some African guys wanted to bet me that they could kick like me. I should have taken that bet. Fricken Soccer players ain't got nothing on me. But I didn't wanna take his money, and I let him and his friend kick the bag around. Keep in mind that this part of chicago is a big tourist attraction, so it's a great venue for footbag.

We kicked with a bag that Mike made. At first I though it might be rolly b/c of the beads in there, but it turned out to be really Choice. We put a hole in the stich though - sorry Mike.

The shred was pretty quality. While Reile was on a run, this one girl actually said, "He's on Fire!" Josh and Jacob move really fast (atomic ducking!). So many fast moves, and long strings to be had. 4 square was so fun. I dominated! I hope everybody had fun. I hope the Intonation music festival was sweet, Mike.

Adler Planetarium - Shedd Aquarium Jam

Date: Saturday or sunday, based on popular demand. confirmation tomorrow.
Time: 12 NOON, not one, not two...12:00

We will be kicking somwhere in between Adler and Shedd. Walk along the lake and enjoy the best skyline view until you see people kicking.

Directions:
Take a train to roosevelt, then take roosevelt east. The bus stops in front of Adler. Red, orange and green lines stop here. Transfer in the loop if you have to get to one of these train lines. You can also take the free trolley from columbus if you don't want to use a transfer, but I don't know how often it runs.
Train/Bus map
Kick Ass Map (click to zoom).
Directions from the website

Parking: If you drive, there is metered parking on the street right where we're kicking. You don't need to park in a lot, BUT it is very hard to find a spot, and it may be like 25 cents for every 15 minutes. If you can't find a spot, drive back down roosevelt, park, and take the roosevelt bus or free trolley from columbus.
