Circle Lock
actually I've found that in other sports the rules get questioned all the time just like in footbag. I remember in touch football (and rugby too I guess) there was a huge amount of debate about forward passes and momentum and the rules changed on that about 3 times.
The obvious difference though is that a competition has an official governing body with official rules (ie. the IFC and the official rules of footbag - which only apply to competitions) - while mainly what we do is more similar to going down to a park and having a friendly kick to kick with a football. I mean we take it pretty seriously but general shredding isn't a sport (at least in my opinion) and has no rules. Some people have specific ideas on how a general shred should be conducted and because we sometimes play with different people (ie. at a tournament) it's nice if people can agree on the conduct of the how the shred is conducted - or at least follow the same philosophies even if they don't agree.

I dunno what's up. I have experienced this - rarely, but yes. We used to have lots of people playing in high school, and sometimes the circle would get to big (mostly with people not paying attention, etc.) So for the exact reasons Outsider mentioned, someone would lock the circle, and people would go to another circle. It didn't happen very often. But sometimes we just wanted to shred hard ...I mean ...get some circuits.
Zeke, you never saw this at Lane?

Are you kidding me? I never got locked out cuz EVERYBODY wanted to play with me! I got charisma like that, baby

Seriously if it ever happened then I probably just forgot about it, I am getting old you know...

I also agree with Jon here. Its a common sense and courtesey thing -
at the three tournaments i attended so far, there were circles like
Honza, Felix, Lasse and Yves, and without any arrogance or elitism involved,it was clear to everybody, that all participation here
is "limited" to watching and uttering highly informal screams of
pleasure .
At other occasions some of the well known top players will join
other circles, like Ales, Stefan Siegert or Kenny Shults to shred,
or instruct or to meet new people .
Nobody should act shy or over passive, but respectful and attentive.
Personally i've never heard anybody talking about being directly
locked out of a circle - mostly the reasons for not being able to join
specific circles are obvious, like the circles level or number of players .
If i was uncertain, like you cant know, if these two guys havent shred
in a while, i would nicely ask and accept their answer without a grudge.
That excluding somebody for no or fishy reasons is rude and un-footbag
should go with out saying, kill those bastards if you can !

Talk about division! You try to rise against something I said, directly, and you don't even phrase or explain it right...nor do you mention it to me first.
Then you guys post a bunch when you get a hint of aggreement from players who have little experience and get sad about it rather than talking to me about it or asking, and then the moment a long time BAP player comes in and explains it perfectly and gets some agreement from others who already voted the other way because of the way you phrased it, you guys totally disappear and don't ask further questions.
First, Thank you Jon
And Thank you Ken. Can you please elaborate further on how length of time in play may influence the knowledge of such practices.
Secondly, I might add that we were taping (I believe, but could be worng, but have unofficially locked the circles before under those circumstances), and Jeff, who is amazing for his level, had been filmed a bunch, drops often from trying tricks above his level, and self serves a lot (sorry, I don't complain much in person but I'm just listing influencing details) and with the circle already full I tried to get him to hold back out of it for a moment...that was all Jeff, it was nothing against ya bud.
I also might add that I always make it a point to spend time with EVERY PLAYER EVERY MEETING, and that it is typical for our club to have more than 13 people gathered in 2 circles nowadays for some reason, despite having 30+ footbags present.
Small circles give people more play time, and in addition, since many of you self serve and don't rebate to often, I love to try to get some circle time with just Ben and Evan every once in a while, especially after two weeks in a row of being the only guiltless player there. Its just hard for me to stay intense and inspired sometimes at long sessions... so I optimize the environment. Plus, you guys have all kinds of sessions without me, and I only get one session with people nowadays despite my having worked to make one of the biggest clubs in the country to play with...so I like my circles to wear me out rather than make me wait while you guys learn to apply the tips I give. I will always be willing to school you, but shred is different, and I'd prefer not to have 4 people schooling in my shred circle.
And Ben, can you please rephrase to poll to "heard of having a circle 'locked' ".
Peace,
Bum

alright first of all, i never self serve more than once. And i only redeem myself when i have a real short crap run. And i have given you plenty of rebates. Atleast i dont self serve 3-4times like Steve.. no offense
Also if i do self serve twice, usually its because i am trying a tough trick, or its with your permission, kthx.

you don't realize it Jeff but you do, last week in one circle you did more than twices more than 5 times within one half hour (think atomsmasher). I taught you guys in my garage under schooling conditions where I said it was ok to self serve, especially at your starting levels, but never enforced not self serving on saturday, so it is partly my fault. I just don't want to be negative.
But all the time I tell you guys to start runs with kicks and go for more than 10 contacts per run so that self serving isn't neccessary, and don't ss myself and rebate whenever anyone drops within 3 or four moves if the haven't ss'ed already.
Peace,
Bum

Who cares? We all self serve. Self serving has nothing to do with why you didn't let Jeff in the circle.

can't edit poll, sorry
I'm honestly not trying to be a bad word, but I have to say something.
again, why must people use the tips you give them and why must you wait?so I like my circles to wear me out rather than make me wait while you guys learn to apply the tips I give

You guys may not realise this but a forum is a very bad place to discuss the problems you have with your club. All kinds of miscommunication is happening in this thread and others and it is not helping your situation at all. You all need to get together, or make some phone calls, and discuss this directly together. Not over a forum.
I would like to apologize for even considering the idea if it was going to make this much ruccus. I apologize to Loren if you are hurt by anything I said, I just had to get somethings off my chest and your posts kind of provocted me to do so. I know the forums weren't the best spot to do it, but I think this was the only chance to actually say what I wanted. I apologize for how this looks to the footbag community, there were some personal issues mixed in with club issues. Every group of people has its problems and this is the first time something like this has happened and hopefully the last.
Again sorry to everyone who had to bear this.

Okay...
Well, about the poll. I have heard of a circle being locked before, and I never considered it a big deal. As long as you are able to play with who you want to eventually then I don't see why it's a huge deal. It's not a sad depressing movement in the sport, or a tremendous fad or anything. It's just a limit on a circle, for whatever reason.
