Consecutive Competitions

Post by Jeremy »

Do consecutive competitions still happen at any tournaments? How seriously is the event taken - ie. is it an event just for n00bs or do open players compete as well? Are the official rules followed ie. upper body fouls, alternating kicks etc?

Should we still have official rules for these events?

I've held these competitions at a few minor events. The name is stolen from Funtastik, but I've heard it called "Ironman"...

Very, very simple rules, and easy to run:

You get everyone in the event ready to go with a bag;
Count down from three;
Last one (two and three) still standing is/(are) the winner(s)
(second and third).

Make sure there's 4-square too, cuase that gives
the players that can only do kick a chance to
play (when they're not in the circle).

Peace.

consecs are still part of the Ironman and Superman competitions at the Funstastic Summer Classic (celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, everybody, so don't miss it), and the Ironman is my favorite part of that event, a pretty unique competitive format (in case you didn't know, its the quickest one to finish: 100 consecutive kicks, ten toe stalls in a row and then one around the world with each foot, a legal net serve, and a golf shot from where your serve lands, then a golf shot from the center baseline of the net court, and then a set and aerial spike over the net). I'd do the Superman event too, but I find the net aspects of Ironman tough enough, in the Superman you've got to face down some actual net players, the "gladiators" (often Kenny and/or Manu!), and I'm just not man enough to try.

At Southeastern Regionals in 2002 and 2003 we did timed-consec, and it was basically a beginner event. We did not use strict rules, just "most kicks in 5 minutes."

Thanks for the replies,

I guess I should say that this is basically about me thinking that we no longer need the consecutive rules in the official rules and I'm considering proposing a motion (in the IFC) to abolish them because I don't think they're used anymore.

Opinions on that?

Just because many tournaments don't run the Timed Consecutive event doesn't mean that we need to abolish the rules to that event. I still like the event, and would participate (and kick all your butts!) any time it were offered as an event.

The rules should stay there, in case somebody desides to run such an event. If nobody actually runs the event, what harm does it do to have the rules available? Even if most tournaments don't offer the event, in what way is the official rules book improved by excluding even the possibility of running an officially sanctioned timed consecs event? Is saving space in the book that critical?

It's not really about space, but more about relevance I guess. It just seems unnecessary to me to have rules in the official rule book that aren't used anymore. Perhaps just cutting out some of the rules would be better then getting rid of all the consecutive section. As it stands there are official rules for the following consecutitve competitions...

Singles untimed (most kicks wins)
Doubles untimed (most kicks wins)
Doubles one pass untimed (most kicks wins - each player can only kick once)
Singles timed (speed consecutives)
Doubles one pass timed (speed consecutives)
Distance one pass (longest pass wins)
One up, five down (first player kicks once, second player twice, first player 3 times, second player 4 times, first player 5 times, second player 4 times etc. Team with most kicks keeping this pattern wins)
Team untimed (team with the most kicks wins)

It seems likely to me that it's a very long time since most of those events have been part of an official IFPA event, or any event for that matter.

I also think that it shows a lack of consistancy that there are official rules for such competitions but not for other equally obscure competitions. Obviously the rules need updating and various people are working on that but at this stage there are no official rules in the official rule book for:
sick 3/sick 1, four square, ripping run, iron man and shred battles - all of those events acutally happen at tournaments. I'm not sure if there should be official rules for all those events but if there are official rules for 1 up 5 down then there definitly should be rules for pretty much every kind of footbag related game we can think of :P

I think that Big 1 and Big 3 should be made official events. Infact I am going to make a poll about it now!

We do Ironman at Hackrifice. I'm not sure if we do it "right", but we just get everyone to shred at once, basically like an INTENSE Most Rippin Run. We did consecutives up until about 4 years ago? I like having TONS of events at Hackrifice, so maybe we will try it too?

I don't think that's Ironman as Jon describes it really. ;) However, at SJFF we do a Rippin Run like that after the normal ladder style event.

I've always wanted to do a competition like that. This year at Midwest maybe! That stuff sounds so fun. I figured maybe like first to 100 kicks or most in 5 minutes. Nothing official per se, but super fun stuff. I generally don't enjoy participating in most of the traditional competitions at tournaments, but I would love to do this.

Well, it seems that the name "Ironman" has been applied to various kinds of events. I've heard it used now for simple consecutives and for group shred, where the object is simply to be the last man standing, the last competitor to drop.

The other Ironman, the one they've been running at Funtastiks for so long, isn't an endurance event, but rather used the name "Ironman" to indicate that its a multi-disciplinary event, like the Hawian Ironman Triathlon (Swim, Bike, and Run). So the Funtastiks Ironman is a consecs, freestyle, net, and golf.

It is pretty fun. Part of the fun is that most people are pretty bad at at least one of the four disciplines involved. I recall one year Sunil went up for the final requirement, the net spike, and screwed it up real bad. He brought the net down on top of himself. He actually seemed pretty pleased with that outcome. It was pretty funny. Personally, I've always found those damn golf shots to be the worst part. Last year I had a pretty decent lead over Greg Nelson, and my net serve was really quite good, but that guy is a killer competitor, and he sunk his golf shots so damn quick he blew right past me. This year I'm gonna get him, though.
