Can we add this to the forum? I've been doing research on PHP some and there are a lot of cool things to add, but I think that this would be a good one to start with.

I concure - I think it would be so much fun. I've seen it implemented at a different forum where it's anonymous too - so if you give somebody bad rep they don't retaliate because they don't know who did it. I like that idea. Hmm that makes it sound like I'll be giving lots of bad rep - people will probably blame me if it is anonymous and they get bad rep now - pretend I didn't write this

I think modified had something like this before but with props. I had sooo many, why oh why did they get taken away. They made me feel cool

Yeah we used to have props. This isn't like props though. On ClubStogie they have something called "Credits" which is EXACTLY like props. But the "reputation bar" (Or as they call it, the "Ring Guage" - hey, it's a cigar forum!) shows which members are respected in the community. You can't give people rep until you have met certain guidelines. The reputation is taken SERIOUSLY, which the credits/props can be more for fun. On CS, you can buy things with the credits (props) that you receive. I think we could implement this as well.

Someone's going to have to explain to me why that's such a good idea. I onlt imagine people giving eachother scores for stupid little things. Mostly bad scores at that.

The point is - it doesn't hurt anybody, and it would be fun. It might encourage people to think about their posts more. It should NOT be anonymous, because then it will be more personal and actually useful. If you give someone bad rep, you will have to explain why. When I got good rep on CS, a guy was thanking me for something I did. So to get bad rep on modified, someone would have to do something really bad that deserved bad rep, whereas to build up a good rep, someone would have to be an outstanding member of the community. Rep guages also make it easier for newbs to know who is respected in the community and who to listen to.

Bottom line, it's meant to strengthen the community and to have fun!

yeah exactly. I think it would be good and I concede that the anonymous idea was a bad idea. Of course the other thing is that if it doesn't work out we can always get rid of it - it's not like we'd have to make a permenant decision. A trial period might be good - after which we could get some feedback and decide to keep it or get rid of it.

Well, the props thing at CS is set up so that you get props for various things, in addition for people sharing props with you. Here's the explanation of that:

Should we add reputation and/or props to modified?

a) Only Add Props
b) Do add Props
c) Only Add Reputation Guage

f) Don't add anything

And NOT anonomous? By god, I could have swore there was enough drama here already, without endless discussions on why person x gave person y some bad karma, dragging up how person y had been insensitive about person x's property Z, and how people with property z are thus alienated by the footbag community (people with property F), and before we know it, we're in some sort of gang war between the Fs and the Zs because there was a mirror argument over reputation on a Z based board where the victim was a shredder.

Well, maybe that wouldn't happen, but it's important to remember that it could.

That certainly got off on a tangent.

Personally, I like the laid-back feel of modified-- you can just chat and comment on whatever. Having a quantitative measure on modified would make me feel pressured and uncomfortable, and more than likely cause me to stop posting here. I like this community as it is, mellow, and hope that we don't add something like this which doesn't seem like it would do much beyond helping to flaunt a couple people's egos (which isn't meant towards the previous posters).

I think you guys are totally missing the point. The reputation guage isn't used to punish people who disagree with you or anything. It's to show respect for people who do cool things in the community. Take for example, Jeremy's Blind Stitch thread he just put up. If you had the reputation thing, you could reward him for that. You wouldn't punish Nathan for making posts that you disagree with. The system is to set up a more formal way of saying "thanks" and to show everyone who is considered "respected." It's NOT a popularity contest. It works well on the other board, EXTREMELY well in fact. I was simply saying that I think it would work well here too.

I can't understand why you at least wouldn't want to have credits/props though. Anyone who was here on modified when they were around remembers how cool they were.

I say we should at least give these new forum opportunities a shot and see what they do for the community. If we're not mature enough to handle the reputation guage, then that's our fault. All I'm trying to say is that both of these things make the other community I'm on a tighter community. Jeremy would vouch for that, I think. In his case, everyone thought he was a troll, so a few people gave him bad rep, while a few others supported his views.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the use of the reputation system, calling it a "popularity contest" and such. That's not what it is.

Actually on second thought I decided a bit too quick about whether or not doing this...

After reading those contra posts I do agree with them that it would probably lower the niveau of the forum...

@ bigdirtyfoot : I don't think they are missing the point and actually if you want to show someone respect for sth. he has done.. well just say it ? I mean it is really nice that some people dedicate a lot of their time to help others and well it would be nice to give the sth. in return...but just having a bar where you can see how many people have shown you their respect...well...
