Dropping Shred 30

Post by Splint »

I've been giving preliminary thought to CSS7 and I'm considering dropping the Shred 30 competition as the main event. Here're the reasons.

1) It's difficult to score quickly thus making it less crowd friendly

2) Last year no one stopped shredding to watch it.

3) It's really an exercise in patterns and plans of tricks.

4) Ever since Rick and I invented the "Rippin' Run" it's been my personal preference of events to watch. Also, recent discussions about battles have led me to think that more people enjoy seeing that style of competition too.

Thoughts...comments.

While shred 30 is one of my favourite events to watch and compete in, I think what you've said makes sense - especially the crowd friendly thing. Also rippen run is very cool - but isn't it also hard to score? It's not just about who goes the longest is it?

It's only takes video review if the people drop within a contact of one another. Otherwise the competitors are encouraged to keep their string going even if their opponent drops. That way it's pretty clear who the winner is.

You want to drop routines? Is that what you're saying David?

I think he's asking if we would have routines instead. We've never had routines at CSS. I would love to make routines part of CSS7.

I was going to suggest to you that very same thing when we got together, Brad.

Probably because we are alike in that our minds are aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening thru a cosmic vapor of invention. :D

In my opinion shred 30 is a good number to see the improvement of our sport . It is good to count and the rules are quite clear .

In my opinion it is how a competition should look like - you have only one opponent - yourself.

I do not like this battles that much and the most important and crowd friendly comp is routines .
the shred competition is the most interesting competition to show the skills, so I wouldn't want to miss the shred contest at an event.

Introduce routines and do the shred right after the routines ( or maybe half an hour later so everybody will watch the shred .

I think the crowd would like an event that runs for a set time per round, with a number of shredders, say seven per round.

The music plays and all seven competitors are on stage at the same time. When ever a player is "feeling it" they step up, indicating they want the bag, and then once they gain controll, bust their run and take their props.

After the time is up, the Emcee polls the crowd to see which players make it to the next round.

If you implement the prposed changes to the CSS, you can no longer call it CSS. You will be taking away the heart and soul of the jam. It is called the SHRED symposium because what is prized and encouraged there is the most heinous shred- the hardest combos, tricks, links, etc, not the longest runs, not the best routines. Sh-t, routines at CSS? That makes me laugh (no offense David)! CSS' intention was to get away from routines as the primary mode of determining a footbag "champion." Bringing routines back is like repeating history's mistakes.

I like Rippin' Run- its fun to watch and fun to compete in, so I have no prob with you guys raising the prowess of this event at your jam.

Shred30 has, as of late, become more about hitting repeating combos to rack up the uniques. But isnt this what is encouraged by the whole shred formula? If you dont like the drill-style competition in Shred 30, change the f-in formula for CSS! Thats your groundbreaking idea right there!

I also have one other idea for a competition, which could potentially identify the best shredder at the event. It is not fully formulated but the idea is this:

Event organizers create strings of tricks, starting from hard guiltless combos, and increasing to strong tripless, and fearless, etc. These strings of tricks are chosen because they are difficult, unique, both-sided, exploit certain difficult elements, whatever. They are chosen without specific players in mind. All competitors in the event get __ # of chances to hit the easiest string. If they hit it, they move on to the next lvl of difficulty, while if they cannot hit the combo, they're out of the competition. Competitors are weeded out by increasingly difficult and demanding strings, or because their footbag skills are too focal (non-mastery of all elements). While this cometition format may only potentially identify the shredder with the widest variety of elements mastered, I do believe it has the potential to identify the best overally shredder in footbag (at the event of course).

My 2 cents.

Jeremy, I like some of your ideas. I think the last one has some real potential. Perhaps making runs that are up to 15 tricks and making the first 2 runs public knowledge before the event to give more people the opportunity to show some stuff. Then you keep the next few sets of runs top secret so that people can't practice them. That way you get lots of people involved (hopefully) because they can hit those runs, then you separate the most versatile and able to hit what's called.

A contest where everybody tries to do exactly the same things? Are you serious? Are you sure that this is really your vision of freestyle progress?

I like Jeremy's last idea too! What a RAD concept. It's definately less about FREESTYLE, but it's so different and refreshing -- I think it could be really fun. I love having drill/record sessions, and that's sort of what this sounds like.

I think what we need is more of an "improv" competition. So 30 second shred but you aren't allowed to plan it...I don't know how this could work, but maybe it could be a combination of Jeremy's idea and Shred 30, where there are guidelines you have to follow, like (at least 5 moves have to be toe-to-toe; or you must hit at least 3 moves with xdex; or something!)...I think this could be very interesting. And to make it pure improv, nobody would know the rules until it was their turn to shred, and there could be a little hat with rules written on pieces of paper that are randomly drawn for each competitor.

Somebody should start a thread that lists all of the different current competitions and we can all argue about them and what could change and about adding new events. I want to see toe-20!

This is definitely a great idea, but you have to also keep in mind that certain rules would be impossible for certain people to use. Imagine if Pinkus pulled a slip that said something like "Must do [insert-hard-clipper>clipper-move-here] on both sides." I guess it would need to be clarified what type of rules you would be enforcing first. Kind of like a chord progression in an improv solo.

Actually Erik, after rethinking your idea, although I think it sounds inventive and really cool, I don't understand how it could work. Any more ideas anyone? (Or Erik?)

In my opinion this would be horrible for the evolution to our sport !

I mean we come/came to a stadium where it is not possible to learn all the concepts .
Moreover why should you try to learn all the elements of footbag freestyle.
It is the best to get better in things you are good and do not waste that much time for things you are not so gifted .

In Shred you can choose your tricks/ links you want AND all specialists can compare each other that is one big plus for footbag and shred.

To decide what tricks you have to hit makes a comp very boring and will slow down the extraordinary skill range of the players.

Sorry but I cannot see how you can make a better kind of objective freestyle comp than shred 30 .

there is no freestyle when you decide what a player have to do - that is a fact!

I don't think one event at one tournament is very significant in the evolution of footbag.

I think ripping run or some kind of battle is the best way to go - then it's obvious who has one and there is still the same nature of shred - but of course in a battle it's unplanned and there is less add hunting and more in the original spirit of shred events.

Shred 30 and Rippin' Run were both CSS originals. I'd say they've been fairly significant in the evolution of footbag.

I don't think so. Not in the context that Jochen was talking about anyway - I think they are events that reflect the way people play and think about footbag - rather than actually changing the way people play or think about footbag.

Also the reason why they're used today is because lots of people like them so if you have some event where people have to hit certain moves and nobody likes it, there is a good chance it won't progress past being at css.

Rippen run - is that event ever held outside North America? It seems like the rules are too complicated - the "shred battles" that I guess the French started (I think) seem like a much better event. Of course players can go easier than their ability but then they lose respect from other players - which is better? Winning or respect? It hads a good ethical decision to the competition too ;)

I believe shred30 is a core event to freestyle, as is routines. I would say both are essential.

However, I don't actually know what the differenace between rippin run and battles are...

Can somebody please expain the difference between rippin run competition and battles?
