The last people stopped shreding not long ago and I thought it would be fun to start a new thred for people to share thier experiences.
I personally had a great time. First off the quantity and quality of kickers was amazing: Moir, Lon, Penske, Flash, Red, Genzu, Torch, Ricky Moran, Justin Dale, Nate Linscott, Nick Landes and Jane Zerbe to name a few. I've been pretty out of the scene so it was nice to meet some people I'd only seen in video and see some people I hadn't kicked with in a long time.
Some of the things that stuck in my mind were seeing Jim hit 16+ 5's (not all unique) and barely looking up in time to see Jordan hit janiwalker > double blender. Jordan is unstopable. He must have played 25 hours + this weekend and never slowed down. I'm not sure I even understand everything I saw him hit so you'll just have to wait for the videos to show up.

The Portland jam was a huge success! Players from all over came to shred. For those of you that are wondering: Flash won with a dropless routine, I took second, Lon got third. We all made away with a bunch of prize money. The shred at the fountain was really memorable. Lon hit diving inspinning torque! Jordan was going off the whole time. I'm looking forward to the next Portland jam. See you all in Seattle!

I really enjoyed Portland and learning from all of the footbaggers that I hadn't met yet, especially Justin. He schooled me on my ducks, pixie sets, and symposium pixies. Now I can actually hit them consistantly. Thanks to his advice, I hit toe diving osis yesterday at the jam. I'm really looking forward for next year's jam.

First would like to say I think it is great that in all the world, there were only two locations that the majority of the world's top freestylers were at this weekend. On one end, Euros (we threw a shout out to you guys), the other, Portland for the Northwest Freestyle Fest.
I am still pretty beat from the event. For me, it began Wed, and just ended with Lon getting on a plane three hours ago. I would have to say this was one of the smoothest events I have had the opportunity to set up. For the attendance, it was the size of a tournament, with people in from all around north America. Special thanx to my demo guys- Lon, Bevier, Jane, Penske, and German, you tore it up. Much love also to Daryl Genz for the 1-5 add demonstations mid event. We also hired Jorden to fly in and show his game, he was too young to get into the event where the demo was, but we wanted him regardless here and representing.
The Demo/Show
The event was broken into two areas, the Jam in Portland, and a demo/micro competition a little north of Portland that John Stalberger and I set up. We called the demo the Founder's Cup, and it was actually a well produced show at an outdoor music festival. We had a stage and sound system set up for us, it was pretty professional. John and I MC'd the event, Daryl was our visual aid, and the other guys were the actual performers. Both days routines were sick, day one Lon went off with only one drop, a masterpiece. At the end of that first day, we had a crowd choice award vote, where people came up to the booth and voted for their favorite freestyle routine. The votes were tallied that night and the results were presented the next day. Lon Smith won the vote, and thus received an actual Founder's Cup trophy. For the routines on the second day, Jim had a sick one drop routine, both Ahren and Jane stepped up their routines from the day before, Lon had a more intense routine but dropped a few more times, and thus that led Scott Bevier to take it home with a sick dropless routine that was well choreographed and had a great amount of variety. Next year we want to expand the event, hopefully work it out to have under 21 be able to attend (I did not promote the demo to the community because it was not accessable to everyone, there were legal stipulations because alcohol was served on the grounds). Also, it is my hopes that we can set it up on a date not overlapping another giant tournament elsewhere in the world, thus being able to fly in certain individuals and get a larger international attendence. This was a good first year though, went along quite smoothly.

Unofficially, the jam started Wed. We shredded it up at a park near my house, great stuff from everyone, especially Lon (22 paradox torques) and Flash. Thursday I took the guys down to the Water Temple, and did a second shoot there for the new Fourkast vid. It was sick. Friday everyone met at the official site in the evening and went off. Again, Lon, Jorden, Scott, Brad Nelson, Ricky, Justin, and a ton of other people tore it up. That night we partied at my house (which is still trashed, but not too bad). Saturday the event officially began, we set up a sound system, put up a sign, and I got the Sole Purpose members their shirts. Thanks goes out to Noah for setting up the jam site. Shred was sick, I got to play a little finally, but not for too long. Shred was strong, lots of Fearless runs from Lon, Jorden, Penske, and Bevier. Some of the stuff Lon and Jorden hit did not make any sense, total outside the box stuff. I believe it was the first time that they had played together. That night there was a big party at Noah's, lots of crazy things went down. I myself was kicking it old school with the Old E, but soon after downing everything else. The drinking games were great, but I got targeted pretty hard by everyone to drink, by the end of two games I was feeling pretty loose. The next day started pretty slow for everyone, thrashed from the night before. Shred lasted all through the day, attendance was high, with freestylers coming in and out all day long. Lon and Jim ran off to a local barbeque for a little while, while Scott, myself and Ahren went and jumped in a pool by my house for about an hour (good water volleyball sesh guys). We ate at a lot of great places, but none as fun as the Pagoda, a Chinese establishment that was built in the seventies and never updated since. It is straight out of a 70's kung fu flick, golden dragons all over the place, lot of funky reds and yellows, with pictures of tigers on the wall, strangly enough 80's music piped in, and a little bridge over a pond to get into the bar. We were half expecting a kung fu fight Bruce Lee style to break out at any second. Anyway, after the Sunday session had ended, a bunch of us went to see Charlie and the Chocolate factory, we laughed our asses off. Fun film. German Lon and I were tearing up the candy and chocolate all through that movie. After a short stent at Noah's house to check out Samurai Champloo went went home, where by no one's surprise Jorden began to shred again.

This film session was some of the most orginal outside the box stuff I have ever recorded. He, Justin and Ricky were kicking it in my kitchen, working on a whole new style of play, something called Breakbag. It was sick. All through the week, Jorden was also showing quite a few components of something I was calling for lack of a better name Bodybag. Keeping the footbag interacting with only one's legs and feet now seems limiting to me after watching Jorden, it can evolve to a full body interaction, something like contact footbag. There is a world of area to expand that as well. Witnessing this stuff made me feel like a newbie again, brought back memories of when I was just entering the sport, and it was all fresh territory waiting to be explored. After watching Jorden and much of Lon's non traditonal stuff, I am motivated in two ways; one is to begin the second Fourkast project (I was pretty burnt out with video production after the first one), and two, work these new elements into my own game. For ten years now I have worked on advancing the traditional forms of play in the game, but now I want to open up a new path and explore other forms of footbag play instead of continue to increase my add ratio. I am excited to work on stuff that falls outside the add system. I see this as where things will probably lead in the future, a more exanded mix of motion with the bag, a more full body interaction. I think a healthy mix of many styles of play is the way to go. Thanx again Jorden, you are a true innovator and an inspiration in this disapline we call footbag.
Anyway, great time all around. We have a few other things cooking in the northwest area, but for the short moment, I am taking a break from promotion and getting to work on the vid. Thanks again to everyone who came up, the Montana Crew (stong!), Rain City Shred, Eugene posse, the demo guys, and all other people in attendance. Special thanks to John Stalberger for employing me to hook this thing up, I look forward to working with such a great promoter and the father of footbag again.

Thanks Red, Noah and Mr. Hacky Sack! Last weekend was the most fun I've had at a tournament in years. Tonight I'm going to bed early to recuperate from Saturday night at Noah's party until 5am...Matt Emmings and his girlfriend stayed at our place in Oly on their way back to BC, so I didn't quite get to catch up on my sleep last night. Work was brutal today...
Jordan was busting all night at Noah's...crazy innovative stuff that I've never seen or imagined before. Jordan puts the fun back into footbag and truly knows what freestyle is all about. Way to take it back to its roots. Not to mention the insane shred he busts in the circles. For me it's like watching allen haggett where I can't quite comprehend what I'm seeing when it's swirling all around behind him and popping up with some cool looking rake. it's so cool to watch though...I'll add him to my list of favorite freestylers to watch. Used to be a short list and now it seems to be growing again.
Always a pleasure to watch Lon kick. Still my favorite freestyler to watch...so smooth, so styley, so fun...all that while still technically extremely difficult. mostly i love his choice of tricks and combinations...even when they're not big adds. style, i guess that's what all of my favorite stylers have...i don't care about the difficulty as much as how cool it looks.
I finally got to know Flash a little better. It was cool to meet him - another cool footbagger! Flash is crazy good. and the over-40 ladies seem to love him!
Too funny!! His routine was cool...excellent choice of talking heads music. I really enjoyed ahren's music too M Warren? I'm gonna have to go look for that album.
Jim Penske is like a machine...he is so fast and light on his feet...changing direction contantly...really amazing to watch such a strong player. It has been cool getting to know Jim better this summer too. we've had so many NW jams this summer that I've gotten to see a ton of the idaho crew. Daryl and SUnny were playing great. Daryl did dsome great demos at the event. oh yeah, flash got a cool $1,000 check that was about 2ft X 5 ft. It was like he won the million dollar sweepstakes or something. It was funny watching him walk out of the site past all the girls with this huge check under his arm.
oh yeah...opening for "KC and the Sunshine Band" -- how can anyone top that?
and yeah, the chinese restaurant was 70's alright, but I can't say much for the food I think daryl or lon won a buck on whether or not everything had MSG in it or not. Verdict was yes...just a little. I guess you could say that's kind of 70's too.

This has been a great year for the Northwest! Montana Jam in April, Idaho Footbag Fest in May, Olympia's Super Saturday in June, and now the Portland Jam in July. This is the place to be!
It was great to see everyone once again
OK so everyone has gone off on what an inventive and brilliant freestyler Jordan is, but what about the juggling?!! I had the pleasure of being in a juggling circle with Justin and Jordan in front of Noah's house on Thursday, then again with Jane and Jordan at Noah's party Saturday night, and I was amazed by what I saw! Now, I used to live in Denver and am very familiar with Mestas, and even with that background, I was VERY impressed with Jordan's skills. I hope someone got footage...
Props to Penske, not only for his incredible shred skills, the technical master and new skool sensation, but also for his Pimpin' skills! When he arrived at Noah's party he didn't waste any time... within moments he was getting to know the cutest girls in the house. There were very few girls... typical footbag party. It turns out Penske had met these girls at the demo and invited them to the party. Props Jim!
Thank you to Red for hosting us, I wish he had been able to chill with us a bit more, but he was always busy making sure the event was in order. Thanks to Red's roommates for putting up with us! Thanks Noah for everything!
