Today Jeremy and I met the Santa Cruz net players. Rob Adams was also in town. Jeremy played with him, Darlene House, Mike Scheele, Theresa Rogerson, and one other woman who's name is eluding me right now. We also met Sage Woodmansee. I played a wicked game of SORRY with Darlene's daughter. Darlene said that this week she would work on adding my name as the freestyle contact on footbag.org's club listing.

After that, Jeremy and I went to the tennis courts and met Farzon, the last person who sent me an e-mail about wanting to kick with the club. He was nice and very motivated to get together at least a few times a week. Nate Maertens came later. The session lasted for over three hours. I felt a great deal of Hagget-Piltzish energy flowing in the circle. For the last half hour we took turns skooling consecutive moves and calling out moves and combos for each other.

Jeremy turned some impressive tricks: 20 consecutive drifters, whirlwind, whirring swirl, symp. torque, baroque, stepping ss barrage, whirr>ps whirl>ps whirl. He had a good amount of 15-20 contact runs. He also hit Knife Factory. (whirling reverse whirling swirl) That move cuts so much edge!

Nate: blizzard and a few mid-run ripwalks, lots of osi, smear, pixie butterfly, a few swirls

Farzon: 30 consecutive toe stalls, 10 insides, 35+ toe/insides contact run, legover bs, atw strong side, clipper, wrap.

Emily: 15 mirages, a few flip illusions, a bunch of strong (including three consecutive) illusions, 10+contacts runs a few times, osis freeze for the first time bs.

I'm not sure. I heard him saying something about his van but I don't know it it's the "net van." He was very nice.

Look what I got for $2: "This item is an original copy of Steven Russell Blough's 1984 instructional book titled "Footbag Dance", published by the Blough Publishing Company of Willits, California - first edition, volume one. The additional text on the cover says, "an experiment in eye foot coordination". With drawings and text by Steven Russell Blough, this book is in essence an instruction manual for hacky sack users, although Blough also touches on consciousness and meditative realms besides just the physical techniques of the footbag sport. This book covers everything from stretches, stances, and kicks, to spiritual awareness within the sport. This is an original copy of this book from 21 years ago, and has been used, but is still in excellent condition. The only minor flaws are a few small stains and scuffs on the outer book cover, and some small folded page corners, but the binding is secure and pages have not yet yellowed."

Yesterday was very warm again but Jeremy and I had another fun skooling session. He had some really good runs and some solid combos. I got to 9 illusions and dropped. I still haven't hit 10. While we were playing some nice Mormons invited us to come to their weekly youth group. After the session he left town.

I'm going to go back down to LA within the next three or four weeks to finish up some video stuff with Sam. I think I might drive down to San Diego and visit that crew for a day or two if they're interested.

I'm on the movie's time schedule, not my own. But I'll still see you next month in my area, right?

I played by myself today and worked on flip illusions a bunch. I need another session of that length with that level of motivation to get them down better. My strong illusion is a lot better than it was a month ago.

I feel like I'm missing something...

I posted that twice because I had written it in a Notepad document before falling asleep and saw that it was still in the document later, so I figured that I hadn't posted it. Turned out that I did...

I saw the chiropractor again today. I don't know if has been the playing that un-pinched the nerve, or if was seeing the chiropractor that un-pinched it making it so that I can play (and walk) again.

Either way, I'm feeling great.

It's always weird to have old but strong memories/feelings brought up. I like it because it reminds me of where I was (emotionally) only a few years ago, but then the same thoughts always linger longer than I would choose.

Hi Emily.

I had a great time last Sunday meeting the group and kicking. Hopefully I can get together with you guys to kick this weekend. Its been a hectic week. Unfortunatly I haven't been able to practice at all since our last session, I have been working from 6-7am in the morning until 10-11pm per night this week. :/

Anyway, work will settle down in a few days and back to practicing. Maybe the weather will cool down a little by then.

Dat was in town today because he and a few of his friends drove from SLO to see a show. At 4ish Dat and my friend Matt Marks came to the tennis courts at my work and we kicked for about an hour and a half. Matt had never tried pixie but by the end of the session he hit it on both sides. Dat had some nice strings and hit stepping clipper>ripwalk. I... had fun.

Tomorrow I'm going to meet up with the Santa Cruz net players again. Matt M. says he's going to try to make it too.

So, if I fall asleep on a "date," does that reflect poorly on him or me?

...we watched Starsky & Hutch. I fell asleep right after the "do it" scene and then I woke up (with my face in a bean bag chair) with the TV off, the room dark, and him gone.

But he left me a voicemail asking me to lunch tomorrow, so I don't think it's a bad sign.

If you were bowling and fell asleep....then yes that's a bad thing for both of you. Falling asleep during a movie doesn't reflect badly on anything...except maybe the movie.

Yeah, I know. It was just felt kind of weird (as in stupid).

Today I tried net for the first time. I don't think I was horrible- but I the only reason is because I already have pretty good eye-foot coordination because of freestyle. The e-invite said 2pm, the normal time that they meet. No one showed until 2:30, and it took another hour for the rest of the crew to show and to get the net set up. So they're not punctual. Like freestylers are? (looks at CIC

)

Darlene House, Sage Woosmansee, Mike McCarthy, Ben Hutchinson, Theresa Rogerson, and Joey Leher (sp?) came out to play. Also a woman named Leni who is still new to net. She's interested in coming out to try freestyle for the first time so I just have to tell her when we're going to kick. After warming up by kicking the bag for a few minutes, I played on a team with Ben. He was very helpful. Then I played on a team with Sage, who also gave me some good suggestions. It's hard to serve (for me) because the kick has to be so different than the freestyle kicks I've gotten used to. I had a few good serves, but mostly they were not so good. It was a very comfortable atmosphere so I didn't feel self conscious about being a beginner at all. No stress, no fear, just fun. After a bunch of doubles games, Sage and Mike played against each other. They are SO awesome to watch play against each other. Lots of spikes where both people went for it in the air, etc. I'm going to be in LA next weekend, but when I'm in town I plan to go play net on Sundays.

Edit: Ben, I'm so happy you have the COWBELL link in your signature. I hadn't seen that until a few days ago and I wouldn't have thought to look for it on a site like that. I feel better having seen it.

I went to the Farmer's Market today. It is reallyunreasonable how happy I've been over the last few days. I've felt like the "old me" again, whatever that might mean. Or maybe the new me... I like that idea. Tomorrow I'm having a slightly shady mechanic do the cheapest repair possible to make my car sound better.
