Hey thanks for the comments guys
Kevin -- you gotta check out the "Erik's picks" MOTW videos!!! Some of them are STUPID: blurry torque > blurry torque, 69 > blurriest, whirling swirl > whirlygig, peeking mobius, gauntlet, ETCETERA (and these are, like, 2 years old...) @______@ Thanks so much for the props!! There are also a bunch of move demos in "move".

He posted a link in the equipment forum for RED Chinas for $20!!!!!! I wanted new shoes (need), and I wanted RED! World Footbag didn't have my size (12), and then they discontinued the coloured Lavers altogether! I was so excited I ordered a pair within 5 minutes of seeing David's post!! I got my brother a pair in his size too.
(I've been playing in the white/navy blue trim Slovenias for, like, 6-7 years!!!!!!!! -- This is my second pair of shoes ever!!!! I still want Climacools, though.)
So I got home from work and I saw the package and I freaked out and I couldn't stop giggling for like an hour. Marita came over for dinner and I kept showing her moves. Then I decided to make a New Lavers video and had a FUN session for, like, 2 hours!!!! My legs hurt, actually...I shouldn't have played like that. I had so many good runs, too, but kept taping over because I played so long and mostly wanted a SUPER long run on tape. My longest was 47, which was super frustrating. I wanted to at least tie my 60. I think I was trying to many neat links, though. Maybe next time I will just focus on length and not care if it's mostly bails.
I ended the session with a messed up bail...I bailed on a butterfly by twisting my ankle on the stairs. It looks really funny on tape, but I'm feeling too lazy to capture it. Some day soon I will post a video of a 100+ contact run. That's like my goal now.
I have some neon orange laces that I may put on my new lavers. Man, they were a little hard to get used to, but within minutes I was busting with them (as much as I can). The only thing I noticed was that osii were weaker than usual. But I could basically do anything
Oh...and my toe moves tend to roll off and aren't that consistant yet. I started doing plantless ducking pdx mirages today, those feel styely.
Well, I can't wait to play again. But for now I gotta stretch some more, have a bath (finally, after a week of covering myself in paint...), work on my class schedules for registering tomorrow! (Actually pretty exciting...) and read Harry Potter. I'm finally reading it...very...slow...ly. I'm almost done chapter 3... I never have time to read. Plus I have some things to do for Marita's birthday that I need to make time for...the weekend, I guess.
I feel really happy. Footbag is awesome
I tried to do some some drifter, rev swirl, etc for David Clavens. I hit blurry drifter mid string a few times, but stopped after that. I don't think I ever actually dropped when I tried, which was awesome!!!! I schooled torques a bit, which was neat, and I DIDN'T GET TIRED!!!! I took the smallest breaks after averaging, like, 30 contact runs!! I felt like Johnny Suderman. UUmm....oh yeah, I played without a shirt, and I have, like, fat creases when I do twisting tricks...so...no more no shirt @_______@

Happy Early Birthday/Early Christmas! For the Lavers link, I mean! Haha you should really thank my friend Hoss though, he's on the forum but doesn't post much. I'm trying to get him into footbag more. But both he and his brother Luke got the Red Lavers which is awesome!
I'm glad you're liking them. Nice post.
I'm glad you're liking them. Nice post.
I'm watching the new video I made from today, and I think I've started rejecting runs for videos that are shorter than 20 contacts, which is silly because I keep trying these neat combos I like, but end up dropping, like, right after, or don't make it all the way through (sometimes 10-contact drills) if I try midstring. I'm really bored with these bail runs. I think I will completely stop playing again and just bike every day to fix my knees. I think I gotta put my seat even higher, though.
I think I may go for 100 contacts a few more times before I stop playing. It felt so good to do those fogs, but I'm pretty sure my knees are angry with me right now. I was really happy with the toe spinning drill too
Well...I don't really have anything to say. I get to sleep in tomorrow, 'cause I only work from 1-5, as it's a civic holiday in Canada tomorrow (ie: most people don't even work...but the bowling alley is always open except Christmas Day). Marita is gone to the States for an overnight trip with her family, so I am lonely.
Lalala.
Nate Linscott keeps saying really nice things about me -- it's SO GREAT!!!!
EDIT: I just did a rough estimate of the average percentage of bails per run in this video -- every single run was over 50% bails!!! Geez

051004: INJURY UPDATE
So I FINALLY, after, like, a half-year wait, had my specialist orthopedic surgeon appointment today. He seemed to know what he was doing, and said that my legs a really strong and that he isn't surprised athletic therapy didn't do anything. He also said that my accupuncturist was wrong and it's not my bone, but possibly something other than just muscle. So I will have an MRA(?) appointment in ANOTHER handful of months. But basically what he said was that he can do nothing about my knees, and that he has no idea what's wrong with my hip and that probably nothing can be done, which really sucks ass, because if that's true I may as well quit footbag altogether. So that was a really lame appointment, and I feel really bad. The end.

I played with Derek today, after school. We ended up only really playing for, probably an hour or less. His knee was hurting, and we ended up talking about Morrowind for the rest of the, like, 1.5 hours. Haha. It was actually really awesome.
I did some double spinning, which seemed really on -- it must have been the carpet...like that short hallway carpet, y'know?
I was also airshredding at like 2 in the morning last night in my kitchen and thought, hey...I bet I could hit void easily if I wasn't injured. I figured it must be easy if you just spin fast enough, which I can. So I remembered today and tried: first try it rolled off my foot! I was so excited, because I know I can hit it easy as soon as I can drifter again. I only tried 3 times, because it hurt my knee, but it rolled off my foot every time -- I haven't done drifters for a year and a half. I also tried on my bad hip leg once, and that one rolled off too, but I think that kind of messed up my better knee...blah. It's so hard to hold back when Derek's busting all sorts of crazy crap.
So I'm going to Chicago next week, and I'm gonna jam with the CIC. I will also be in Minneapolis for a day before that, so I'm hoping to hook up with Juan Rangel's crew! Then after this I'm going to take a lot of time completely off. If I can make the time I will bike a lot to fix my legs. School is super hectic these days, though. I have a test and essay outline due before I leave, then 2 test when I return, another test the week after, then my essay is due, then two more tests and 3 essays all due at once >_____< Then I need to work crazy hours over Christmas to pay for next semester...
I'm going to go do some stationary biking while watching The Move

hey erik, i'm stoked to hear you're gonna go kick with cic. i'm super jealous!!! man, we are ALL INJURED! that's crazy. really really crazy! is derek crazier now than he was before? or is it the same level of crazyness (which i need to point out is still really freaking crazy)? hey, some thing just came to mind... has any one spoken to jess lately?

she either has been drilling solo and is gonna blow our minds next time we see her, or she's been playing abit on her own or she's quit altogether... goodness gracious me i hope it's the first option. i'd be satisfied however with option 2... option 3 would be kinda crappy though...
any way, good to hear you're still stoked on footbag.

A.G.
I can't remember what I said, like, last year, but this time I'm 99% sure I'm moving to Toronto for a year or two. We're already talking about costs of furniture and whether we want to Uhaul or buy new stuff, and looking into places that may hire me on advanced notice to get any sort of work as soon as I can, and stuff. We'll be moving after the summer. I doubt I'll be playing again by then (I haven't played since Chicago, like I intended), but if I have any sort of free time I'll totally make some videos of the scene and hang out.
As for everything else, I'm super bogged with school crap. This past weekend was the most crazy I've ever had anything. I had a 15-page paper due Monday, which my brother forgot to hand in for me, and who knows what marks I'll get docked for that (sucky!), and a final exam in one of my history classes yesterday, which I think I did pretty well in, after studying many hours on no sleep. I have 3 more essays, 2 exams and a test, and 2 huge novels to read (not counting text readings) within the next, like, 2/3 weeks.
I have over a week until my next exam, though, so I finally get to relax for a couple days. I've watched some really good movies lately:
-Crash
-Garden State
-Mr. Holland's Opus
I also find myself airshredding constantly. Even fake spinning whirls and drifters and crap hurt my knees, even when I'm not moving anywhere close to fast. Oh yeah, and I must have a sleeping disorder. I missed all of school last week, and I woke up 9pm the other night and was up all night so then was dead tired after my exam yesterday and napped for 4 hours, then got up for another 4 and went back to sleep and for some reason I'm awake at 6 in the morning...I'm still dead tired though. Ahhrrr. It really messes with my school schedule (hence I haven't been to class in over a week).
That's about all. It's basically all school. Marita comes home on the 10th, though, for over a month!! So we really look forward to that. I still haven't seen Harry Potter; I was supposed to last night. Marita's mom is making me dinner and then treating me to it on Friday...I kind of really wanted to see it already, though...
That's all. I guess I will eat some toast and watch a movie in bed before school or something. I think I must have depression or something 'cause I'm always tired and stressed out @_______@

Oh, if anyone is wondering, Hackrifice is apparently down because I need to renew the domain subscription...I will try to do that soon.

FOOTBAG
I have no footbag news, because I have maybe touched a footbag, like, 5 times since Chicago. It's so bloody hard. I dream almost every night that I am playing footbag. I know I did last night and realized when I woke up that I really can't
KNEE BRACE
I may be getting a neoprene knee brace today. I'm really excited for that -- I looked it up, and the one I saw sounds so awesome. It actually made me say something, like, "life is awesome" out loud. It's got side support, and some crazy system that keeps the whole brace in place. Man. Oh yeah, so I know what's wrong with my knee(s -- left knee doesn't really hurt), but I don't really feel like explaining. Well, basically the knee cap is out to the outlside of my leg too much and I need the brace to keep it centred. I dunno. I also have to strengthen my inner quad muscles to fix that. Too busy with school.
MISSED SCHOOL
I missed almost all of last week of school for no real good reasons. I've missed most of this week too. Monday because I got to school and felt nauseous, so left after my first class. Then yesterday Marita called me at like 2 in the morning and got my brotehr to wake me up and I couldn't get back to sleep so I went to school and skipped second class again. Then today I completely skipped, because they're less important classes and I have an exam tomorrow that I haven't studied for. So I woke up at 3 this morning and have been trying to study ever since. It's going pretty good. About half done the material and have done my day.
VALENTINES
I was drawing a lot before school got killer (I have 4 exams and 3 projects due right after reading week -- this coming week). But then I took a week off to work on my valentines day present. It's so hardcore and it took me hours and hours every day. It's a 12-foot long scroll with TONS of writing and 7 drawings that took me, like, about an hour each to draw, and a heart for every day we've been going out until feb 14 (953). I'm pretty excited for her to get it. I also baked two kinds of cookies and sent some origami flowers that I made her for our anniversary a while back.
SEVEN SAMURAI
I borrowed Seven Samurai from my friend a couple weeks ago and I'm excited to just relax and watch it with my brothers in a couple days, after my exam. We will make bubble tea and order CHEAP CHEAP pizza ($6 for a 14'!). I also have to do some serious research for one of those projects on Friday, though. BLAHR.
I got my camcorder back from my brother and I mean to make some videos from older footage when I have the time. I have a Derek special I never made and lots of Hackrifice 05 footage (including Rory Dawson's Pokemon routine (SICK!)).
BOOKS
Oh, I'm also reading tons of books. I finally finished Ellison's "Invisible Man", and I'm almost done Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey". Next is "Long Day's Journey Into Night", and then Frankenstein (and I can't remember any further past that). And when school ever ends I have a HUGE list of books to read for fun. I've discovered that I totally dig gothic literature and old english. And I want to read Pride and Prejudice and Shakespeare (now that I think I can appreciate it, since I hated school in high school). Oh yeah, and Matthew Lewis' "The Monk" is probably the best book I have ever read -- one of the characters in Northanger Abbey actually says that it is the only novel worth reading. If you've ever seen "Quills" (about the Marquis de Sade; with Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Michael Caine), it's basically the same but a lot more violent and evil.
I recently checked out Caleb Abraham's and Ashley Danawski's and Riku's blogs. Fun stuff, but I find it hard to keep up with the blogs, because there are so many and I can never read everything on modified all in one go becfore it marks itself as read
. Back to studying Southeast Asian Art...

So I've stopped wearing my knee brace, except once a week at work, where I'm standing for 8 hours straight. I have to constantly pull it up, but I think it helps then. I stopped wearing it because I think it was making my knee much worse. Your knee cap totally moves sooo much when you sit down, and so at school when I'm sitting all day (when I actually go to class) instead of keeping my knee cap in place it's pushing it in all sorts of terrible ways. I don't even really know. I kind of asked the girl at the medical athletic supplies store, where I bought it, and she said that I could just wear it all the time and it would be good.. I'm thinking no. SO I spent a lot of money on it and I don't even use it now and feel like I don't know how to use it if I'm not sure if I can even sit with it on...
I have an appointment with my family doctor on Monday. I'm going to ask for a referral to physical therapy at a hospital (100% coverage with referral!!), I'm also going to ask how the hell to wear my knee brace, and I'm going to ask about chiropractic, since Alex Uranos is convinving me of its validity. I have bad experience with it and have heard very terrible stories, but I know Andrew Grant also sees (or saw) a chiropractor, and I'm going to ask him about it too. (I'm pretty sure that my family doctor also thinks that chiropractic is bullshit, as he called it a crock when the one athletic therapist (chiropractor-in-training) told me that my pelvis was out of alignment...) Blah...
I really have no hopes of ever being able to play footbag again
I miss footbag. It would make me sooooo happy to be able to play even the tiniest bit...
Maybe I will also go to my girlfriend's sister's best friend's mom (the relation is a lot closer than it sounds...) for accupuncture again (only this time for my knees...), if nothing else really works out.
Life is okay. I'm doing super well in school; I'm so happy, and pretty surprised... I barely passed highschool and didn't care about school until I went back after my time off from university. I have a 4.0 average this year, so far!! I got As in both courses from last semester, and have grades like 97% and 85% in one course...nothing really below a B, except one C+ in Romantic Lit (and that was only because he said that 90% of the class lost an entire grade for not having written PERFECT technically (a subject he didn't even graze in class, or even mention was an important part of the paper, until AFTER he handed them back, saying how poorly everyone did....)
I've started learning how to juggle, since I can't even stationary cycle anymore without pain; it is my last resort at aerobic exercise and to stay in shape. My stretching has kind of gone to hell, as I probably suffer from depression and miss 80% of my classes... Juggling is fun. I learned 4-ball from Tom Mosher's tip in the juggling thread -- doing two in each hand, but alternating instead of tossing them at the same time (which I feel is too lame); I learned shower (always forget the name of this one) from Dat Phan's tip, and also kind of made up a drill for myself to skool it better (since I can only really do it on one side) -- it's kind of like the box but only with two bags...it's really funny when I completely miss my hand in the hand-to-hand; umm...I don't know if I learned any other new tricks; I'm trying to clean up my cascade, since I used to always throw them straight up instead of across.
I can't do many tricks ('pattern's?), but I can do columns, and a few variations, cascade, 2 in one hand all four ways, reverse cascade, over the head (just a little), flash....and I think that's all. I try to do some footbag-like dex tricks too, but those are hard to toss in, for me...
I'm also trying to draw more and learn anatomy.
And I've been uploading many videos to my footbag.org gallery, which is pretty fun. Waiting 9 days for Oblivion, which I am soooo excited for. I think my brother and his best friend and I are going to have a geek party the night it comes out, and we will all bring our computers to his house and play it all at the same time
Like a LAN party....but all on a one-player game :p Geeking out!! Can't wait!!!! See my super geeky Oblivion thread in the Kicking Circle...

I saw my family doctor the other day.
I told him that I can't really do any bicycling or anything, and that the other surgeon doctor he referred me to wants me to go for physical therapy. My family doctor said that if it hurts to bike and it seems to be getting worse that I should get and MRI on my knees (before I got it on my hip), and have the operation done.
He elaborated more on the surgery and said that I would need to get something sanded down (I forget if it's the bone or the cartelage behind the knee cap?) He said that he could feel a warmth difference between the knees saying that my one bad knee is really inflamed and that I should take ibuporfen to bring that down, and also to sit with my legs extanded (not at 90 angles) so that my knee cap isn't sitting in the socket with pressure on it. He says that my knees are grinding every time I bend, and I can feel it now. He says icing will only eleviate pain and won't don anything in the long run. So I've got a big Costco bottle of ibuprofen, and I'm sitting really uncomfortably with my legs extended...
He also said that if the surgeon he referred me to insists that physical therapy is the better thing to do, that I should go with that, but to relate what he said about the operation and MRI. He was hard to understand and I didn't catch a lot of what we were talking about... I should be able to get the 100% coverage, I think, though, by going to the Health Sciences Centre. The operation is only 20% successful they say, but if it goes wrong nothing bad will happen, and if it works my knees will operate better (though he said that I will never be as good as if I never had this problem -- he said I will never be a "carpet-layer" -- meaning I will never be able to kneel all day long (kneeling hurts a lot)...not sure if that refers to jumping around, kicking a bag too...didn't think to ask...)
In other news, I discovered an explanation for my anti-social behavior. I suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder; it's weird stuff like I'm scared of walking on the side of the road where cars drive towards me because I don't like people looking at me and I don't know what to do when they are, or think they are. It's also called "social phobia", and probably accounts for a lot of shy peoples' behavior. I found a support group forum, and they seem really good -- it's like 4 times bigger than Modified. My problem is more with speech. I have this problem where my head goes completely blank when I try to talk to people and I can't think of anything to say. It's really frustrating, because I can write perfectly fine (like on MSN). It's not all due to social anxiety, either, because I have trouble speaking to EVERYBODY, like, even my family, and my girlfriend. So that really sucks, and has been fucking with my life for forever, but I'm looking for help, so I'm really happy about that.

MY JUGGLING POST
Since I can't play footbag, I am going to use this post to keep track of my progression in juggling. I waste a lot of time doing nothing, and haven't been doing the things I wish I were doing, like, juggling and drawing, but maybe making a list of what I can do and my records will get me to break records and learn new tricks. So here it goes:
#s = full rotations
I MOVED MY JUGGLING RECORDS LIST TO THE FIRST PAGE
I don't really know the names for patterns, but I kind of wrote them the way I thought they are... I would love any advice or suggestions for new patterns to learn. I don't have a lot and it's kind of boring to juggle because I don't have enough variety to mix it up with.

Hey Erik!
Here are some good juggling links that Jorden hooked me up with a while ago. The first is basically a web version of the second. You should definitely take a look at it.

If you're still interested in learning anatomy you can do a great deal of it online. www.getbodysmart.com is a pretty cool website that shows you a lot of things. I have a handful of other links as well, we use some of these websites as resources for my excercize science class.
I wish you the best of luck with recovery!

Yeah someone gave me that link in the juggling thread. At first I found it really hard to decipher what was happening without being able to slow-mo (there's another site with demos of a guys, and an option to view super slow, which was really helpful, but not all the videos worked for me). This is good and I'm learning the tricks -- I guess I needed to learn more basic patterns before I moved on to the ones that were hard to understand.
Eating Apples was the one in particular that was hard to understand at first, but now I get it. I think it's just Chops, but you bring the ball up to your face after every catch, right? Actually I saw another that was similar to Chops, so maybe I still don't know the names properly. I tried that one, and it was hard!
I worked on a lot of new stuff just now; it was super fun!! I beat my record in everything, though I haven't really tried too hard at anything yet, because I'm not really at a point where doing a bunch of really easy patterns is much of a challenge. 3-ball multiplex in one hand is hard, but I managed two rotations in each hand. Multiplex is so cool; I think I understand it. Jeremy O'Wheel was explaining it to me in footbag chat a while ago. Then I was just juggling in my kitchen and was basically doing 2-ball-one-hand-multiplex against a wall, and then I did the same but both hands at once, and I thought I made it up, but now I get it and I really like multiplex!!
Anyway, I'll update my list! This is so fun! It's like footbag all over again. I'm doubting I will ever play footbag again, and even if I do, it will probably just be the sort of easy spinning and ducking stuff I was doing that last year and a half while injured... that would be so amazing right now, though. I would love to be able to play to any degree again in my life.
And thanks for the anatomy link, Johnny! You're not at UofT yet, are you? I think you said you were moving to go to university? Are you going into some field of health-sciences? This really interests me too, though primarily my interest in anatomy is for drawing, since I never learned anything practical in fine arts........
I've been listening to Les Misrables lately. I love this musical so much. I don't usually like musicals. I grew up on this, though, and I love every single song and know the words to every single song. I love it!! I wonder if I would like the book as much...
