Tight Lavers ...

Post by jon »

I am thinking of ordering some of those red lavers that were recently posted. I have been wanting to get a smaller pair for a while. My first pair of lavers were size 9. I used them for about a year before I had the crazy idea that bigger shoes would be better and got a pair of 9 1/2. After last summer I came back to sanity and relized small is the way to go. I wanted to try a pair of 8 1/2 because the 9's still give me room in the toe. Unfortunately the red lavers don't come in 8 1/2 only 8's. I am thinking my feet would probably feet into 8's esp once the shoes loosen up and I mod them. Any thoughts on this? Should I stick with a slightly larger size and get another pair of 9's or try and go down a whole size??

thanks

You'd be safe with a pair of 9's imo. A little toe room isnt bad, i have toe room in my shoes too, and it helps with stalls i guess!

I find that Laver sizes run small. But maybe I'm wrong. I got 13s and I grew out of them a year ago, so I've been using CT 520s (14s), but when I go back to Lavers I'll get 14s.

I prefer enough room in the shoe, and I just lace them tightly and with short laces. I'd suggest that, but I suppose everyone's taste is different.

Just to clarify, my thinking was tighter will equal lighter. I dont need a bigger surface for delays. I would prefer lighter shoes with smaller delaying surfaces to the other way around.
Also from playing with Johnny and Jorden, I have noticed that both players have feet that seem to make their shoes bulge out near the toes (at least on the sides). Both players have big feet, but with 8's on my feet I feel I might get the same effect.

The helpful thing about tight lavers is that you have more power over the sole. You can grip it better, allowing you to bend it more, giving you better crank.

If you keep the toe walls on, and do the kenny shults style of lacing (sort of loose) I think an 8 will work.

Word of caution:

I got blue lavers in a half size too small and I hated them. My toes were crunched in the toe box and after every session I got these mad bunyons/tender red spots on the joints of each of my toes. It was very uncomfortable and hindered my play. After about 2-3 months, the problem kind of decreased, I guess because I wore in the shoes, maybe even stretched them out a bit?? But for the first few months, I was a sad penguin.

What about bending your toes on clippers?
