SUBMIT Massive Tricks!

I started the Massive Tricks gallery with the goal of including every massive trick ever hit on video, past, present & future. This meant I could not do it alone, and would need community participation. At first it went pretty well; I contacted a few people who gladly submitted all the tricks they had on video. The Czechs even filmed a big trick session exclusively for the gallery. Naturally it grew quickly, and this level of participation lasted many months. However and to no surprise, I got sick of chasing after people to get videos, and I became increasingly discouraged when time and time again people published long shred videos, containing numerous massive tricks, without contacting me to submit the individual moves. Unfortunately that level of participation also lasted many months. It's time to turn it around.

The Massive Tricks gallery is there for everyone, and it should continually reflect the sport's high level of progression. I ask to everyone, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR MASSIVE TRICK VIDEOS!!! If you made a video in the past 1-2 years with massive tricks (you know who you are), or if you are making one right now, submit them! It's easy.

INSTRUCTIONS:

v5 will simplify the process: anyone will be able to login and submit (and host!) their videos in real-time, in whichever codec they prefer (QuickTime encouraged!). In the meantime, it is already quite simple.

Step 1. Make the video:
a. Capture your footage in DV compression (you should always do this).
b. Trim your clip to 2-3 seconds before and after the trick starts and ends, allowing for any cool reactions.
c. Write the clip to a new sequence, then Export using DV compression.

Step 2. Upload the file(s):
a. Connect to ftp://[email protected] (Internet Explorer should work). Password: tricks
b. Open the 'uploads' folder and make a new folder called 'your_name'. Drag & Drop your file(s) into the folder, and let them upload.
c. Email me at guru ~at~ flipsider ~dot~ com to let me know you have uploaded something, including the trick name(s) and any stories about the trick, plus if it's the actual invention shown.

That's it! Post a reply if you have any questions.

What if someone uploads a trick they believe to be massive but you do not agree?

Maybe I should have explained what happens after each submission. First I have to watch and decide if it's massive. If it's not massive, I will probably just send a quick email saying it's not quite up to the standards. If it is massive, I will re-edit it with slow-mo, titles and graphics, then export and upload it to the tricks page.

In the future (v5), I will have nothing to do with the process, which I look forward to. There will be a panel of experienced players to evaluate each submission then simply approve or deny it, and it will immediately generate on the Massive Tricks page.

Yeah, but to more precisely answer your question, if a trick is questionable, I will ask a 2nd opinion from a local, experienced player. I don't like having dictator-like responsibility.

Don't have time to read this all (I will when I get back from tutorial) but u might wana keep an eye on the sick1 modified comps. (sorry if this is irrelevant).

Ok I have read your post now.

When I get home I will submit the raw footage of all massive sick1's I have recieved over the last few months (not including this months, will submit those after this months comps are released!)

chainsaw and full symp alpine tapping whirl are already there. Don't upload those. fairy ducking drifter is questionable(its not paradox by the way).

Of those (not counting those already in the Massive Section), I think these are massive:
-Pixie whirlwind!!!
-Moirus!

and maybe:
-Phasing spinning osis...huge, but not really...?
-Inspinning blender...?

EDIT: Yeah, alpine fume is huge...but it's still hard to say it's on par with the tricks on Flipsider...

I think the idea is this:

If you've got to say, "Hmmmmmmm, I don't know if it's massive enough..."

It's not massive enough.

Any trick that's on there should make you say, undisputedly, "Wow, that is big. Really quite incredibly large. Massive, even."

Yeah, the true massive tricks will look better if there are only a few.

You can say what qphox said, or for the big massive: True Massive Tricks, or something like it.

True for the Symp Tapping trick, because it's the same person hitting it, but for Chainsaw, you are welcome to upload that one. With v5, a single topic can have multiple videos, so for example there could be 10 nemesis videos under Nemesis. It's designed that way so you can see multiple examples of any trick (including the Practice section).

People seem a little worried about the proliferation of the massive trick section, so how about making submission to the massive gallery the prize for the monthly contests? It'd keep a steady flow of new tricks heading for the gallery, ensure that they are all undeniably HUGE (with people like Jorden, Honza, and Anssi regularly entering) and add a bit of spice to the already exciting modified sick1 competitions.

Absolutely not. You guys seem to forget that most of the sport's best players are not active on this forum, and that almost NONE of the 10 pages of MTs were discovered here. They came from behind the scenes, where footbag really happens, IMO. People don't need to be concerned with sub-massive tricks being included in the gallery. Whoever is in charge- and it will be a few experienced players- will be very discriminating.

I want to keep it so that ANY ONE can submit videos at ANY TIME. THAT is how to maintain a steady flow of new videos.

if I may add something to all this: what I find very important and caracteristic of the massive tricks section of flipsider is this:

videos are (nearly always) of good quality.

Ellis I think you did a good job at keeping the video quality very high, it makes that section look very proffessional. I don't know how you plan on treating massive trick entries that have low frame rate, bad framing or worst of all: insufficient lighting. Any thoughts on that?

While I think the massive trick section is pretty damn cool and watch all the massive tricks as they get posted there - I think it's fine for Eli to decide what's massive and what's not and put whatever you think is impressive up there. I think in general people on modified have completely the wrong perspective on footbag and sometimes it really annoys me. Not right now but a day or two ago I wrote up a huge rant in my blog and then deleted it. Flisider.com is Eli's websiite - he can write whatever he wants there. If he decides that mouth catch set ducking symp whirl is huge then that's great. Just like modified and so many other footbag resources - flipsider is not an "official" footbag website - there is no official definition of a "massive trick" and having a trick put up as a massive trick does not make it massive. Personally I think there are a number of tricks up there that while they were certainly massive when they were hit - are now not massive at all - montage, your mom, irish cream being good examples where people have hit the exact same move with an extra component in all instances. But that's irrelevant.

My original point I wanted to make with this post is that all this discussion is pretty pointless in my opinion. It's very simple - if you hit a trick that you think is big - submit it. If you want to help out footbag or have an opinion on something - pick a topic like judging competitions. It seems to me that most footbag competitions - especially routine competitions have problems with judging and yet so few people seem to care - why don't you discuss that instead of all the other stuff that isn't really important but that gets discussed anyway.
