Pop vs. Soda

Post by bigdirtyfoot »

Oh man. I thought this was great. Regional map that shows what each place calls their soda/pop/coke/other.

AMAZING colors.

I say, "pop" or whatever the drink is called, and I am from Pennslyvania. I am in Georgia right now, and they say, "soda" or "coke" (referring to any carbonated drink...coke, pepsi, sprite, dr. pepper...all coke). I don't mind them saying, "soda," but I do with the "coke" name. It confuses me! Anyways, yeah. :? I remember one of my friends had a message up on aim, and it had something to do with "soda pop." It said something like ""Soda" means bubbles and "pop" means rocks. It is called "soda pop." Go figure." Something like that. It was a long time ago. I don't remember.

I'm in the midwest and I say 'pop'. I've never called it soda. I've never called it coke unless I was talking about that specific product.

like the map says...boston/MA is all about soda. i think the number polled is accurate enough because most people will go with what their region would say, since they live there and many probably grew up in the area.

They didnt do the UK.
We call Coca cola "Coke" and some things people call pop. But other than that we say "do you want a fizzy drink?"

I remember seeing a more general map from quite a few years ago (5 or 10) . It only went so far as the state level, but was interesting as well. I realized that I call it pop or soda indiscriminately. :/

Heh, go figure the rednecks would call soda coke. Damn bass ackwards hillfolk. :o Just kidding. I'm from the far north and I call it soda, damn it, but it says 50-80% of the respondents in Hill County Montana call it pop. Hm... I guess I'm one of the few up thar/here.

I grew up in the south, and everybody called everything Coke. They ask you what you want to drink, you say "Coke," they say, "What kind?"
They get mad when they come up here, because they ask for a Coke and the waiter just brings them a Coke.

I've always just called it by whatever its name is. Sprite, Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Cream Soda, etc.

Ya, that map is pretty accurate to where I've lived.

I've always lived in the south west and we all call it soda, cause that's what it is.

I've heard pop and coke a few times, but usually people get wierd looks for saying that.

Ok I took the pepsi challenge with a bunch of friends, 2 of them couldn't tell difference, and the other 3 (one of which was me) could tell that there was a different taste but didn't know which was which.
..and we were all sure that our personal preference was right until that damn challenge

Have you ever taken the pepsi challenge Pete?

I call it soda pop.

I think the politically correct term is "carbonated beverage".

Actually the science behind statistics is very accurate - you'd expect the results from such a survey to be pretty spot on. Of course there are lots of factors and it's fairly easy to manipulate a survey so that people give you the answer you're looking for but I don't see any reason why that would happen in this survey.
