The original had no real answer, but later Lewis Carrol did give a possible answer:

"Because they both produce a few notes, though they are very flat, and it is nevar [sic] put with the wrong end in front." (note that nevar is raven backwards).

I like Aldous Huxley's answer more though:
"Because there is a b in both and an n in neither."

Yeah full points to Kaos. CS Lewis rocks by the way - it's from Alice in Wonderland when Alice is talking to the Mad Hatter and the March Hare at the tea party.

Another answer I really like which is very clever but also cryptic is "Because Poe wrote on both".

Yeah, if you've enjoyed Alice in Wonderland, you should definitely read Through the Looking Glass as well.
