Focus: Concentrated or Disperse

Post by JFootbagger »

For me I usually focus on 1-3 tricks at most, concentrating on them untill I get them dialed. And then when I do, I move onto next set of moves.

Note: sometime I do fool around though and try different things still :P

What about you?

ive never really spent alot of time working on one trick , you learn alot more if you spend a diverse amount of time schooling other things then just one trick , like when I would school my flip whirl I would make it a goal to hit it 5 times every sesh and it doesnt make you school the piss out of it and you still get stuff done , now a days I just shred and try new things mid string and such and if I feel that a trick needs a little work ill stop see what im doing wrong and try to fix it but not waste a whole sesh on it .

I find that concentrated works best if you really want to make progress -- but it works best when it's mixed with a dispersed style of schooling. For example when I solo I'll heavily school maybe two different concepts, and then when I play at a session I'll work on throwing those moves in here and there to make sure that I can throw it bsos, etc. Also, it makes more sense to school components as opposed to tricks, however schooling certain tricks can improve a lot of parts of your game. For instance, I find schooling BOP to help my endurance, ripwalks help stepping and my core muscles in general, and gyro clippers help me keep good form on spinning which improves my spinning ducking as a result.

What I meant by this is , I'll go for other tricks that I want to hit (not necesserily the 2 or 3 that I'm mainly focussing on, just the other ones that I have in my head)

I only like to concentrate on a few at a time making sure i have them dialed enough so i can hit them in strings. I find this makes me a more consistent shredder when it comes to string length.

The downside is that i have not hit many 5 and 6's. To be exact only one, phoenix. But hopefully one day i will be able to hit 5's and 6's in my runs consistently. One day.

yeah I definitly focus on only a few tricks and work on them for a long time. I wouldn't say until they are down because I always thing every part of my game can be improved but I tend to work on the things that I think need the most work.

i don't focus on single moves. i focus on components. so if my goal is to obtain a strong fairy set i'll do lots of fairy mirages, fairy ss mirages, fairy butters and fairy ss butters, other baby step moves using the same sets. once the set is dialed i'll move on to the next one.
once you get your basics down and you can hit a variety of sets, and baby moves using those sets, it's time to build upon that. for example, take whirl. i'll have to learn whirl, toe whirl, and pdx whirls. after that i start to work on pixie whirls, pixie ss whirls, then tapping and atomic whirls, stepping whirls and blurry whirls, etc., etc. the whole time you are strengthening your basic whirls and building towards more difficult tricks using the component and a variety of sets. i'll usually work on this for about a month and then move on to something else, like drifters, double downs, double leg overs, etc etc etc
i think it's a bad idea to work on a whack of different stuff at once. trying to work on spinning whirl, fairy dlo and jani walker all at the same time seems counter productive since you are working on totally different movements for each trick. instead of building a strong base of moves, you dial 3. well that's fine and dandy, but i think it's a waste of time. it limits you to 3 moves, instead of giving you the choice of throwing down what every you want .

yeah totally - that's a good point. I almost always will work on a component rather than a move. Also I'll work my way up the things I think are important for that move a lot of the time. For example if I wanted to drill furious for a session I'd actually do it like this:

drill whirls
drill barrages
drill quantum sets
drill symp whirl sets
drill furious sets

I'd drill each of those components to improve on the component - not just to improve my furious sets so for example with whirls I'd hit stuff like pdx whirls and ps whirls while drilling. I also try and be as disciplined as I possibly can be.

hey thanks guys, i sort of practice everything in a session... like i'll start with some toes, then go to clippers and then infinities. then i'll do mirages and legovers, illusions and pickups etc and every now and again try some strings for a few minutes. and drill things like butterfly > paradox mirage rpt. i think your advice will help me to focus my game better, thanks!

I also try to work on a component or two components in each session. For example, I might do spinning and pixies. I haven't tried going for a whole month with a single focus like Andrew has, but I may have to try that.

It depends on in what perspective of time we are looking.

Sometimes I make sessions that are only for few moves. I drill them, and nothing more.

Other times I do session just for pure shreding. I try many different things, and I'm focused on variety of my strings.

So if we would consider one session. I mix both.

If we would consider one week - I mix but with more random stuff than beeing concentrated on some things

If we would consider one month, or longer period, I'm "trying whatever you feel like and hitting it in time"

Sometimes I will drill 1 trick for a long time. But when I'm playing I just hit whatever feels good and is fun. Like last session I was working on flapper set whirl a bit, gimping a bit, stepping ss osis, spinning, and long runs. I bassicaly just do whatever feels right at the time. Once I get tired I'll usually focus it down to one or two things.

Mostly I first drill my basics a bit and then I do some runs and try to add difficult tricks to my strings...

then I go back to the basics etc. etc. etc...

But I'm not as good yet and I think that as soon as my basics are good enough (what won't take me that long anymore ) I will just play and try a difficult move between the clippers/butterflies :D

Ok if I try to learn something new I really focus on that particular trick and when I can hit it ceaseless I add it to my strings

i have up to three things to work on at once, say you're having a terrible spinning day or something, then you can always work on one of the other two....^_^

Depends on if I am soloing or at a shred.
If I am soloing I like to practice all my concepts and kind of 'break records'. So I will try to hit 1 more ducking clipper than I could yesterday etc.
My concepts include:
Basic 2's
In and out double dex's (eg datw)
Ducks
Osis
DLO
Drifter
Spins
Steps
Fairys

Soon I will spend less time on these concepts and move onto Blender, Torque, eggbeater, barrage, double switch/pickup.

:D
