how long till you got basics down?
just wondering what other peoples progression rate is.....i just started about 8 weeks ago when i met a guy named richard abshire who makes bags in san diego and he's been showing me and my wife some stuff. so i guess i'll break down what i know so far (which isn't alot yet).
toe stalls
inside stalls
outside stalls
clipper stalls
legovers
around the world
mirage
osis
butterfly
i've only hit osis and butterfly a couple of times on both sides but am starting to get consistent and my wife is the same except she also has sole stalls down and has hit x-rake a coupe of times.

well, I kicked a hack sack around for about 3 years before I even tried a toe stall, and it took me about another year to get to what you have done, cause I didn't really have much interest initially (and by initially I mean for a year
). You sound like you're progressing quite nicely though, and you and your wife can motivate each other!

It took me around 1 to 2 months to get the basics down.

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

Re: how long till you got basics down?
toe stalls - 1 week or so (including "magic hop" if you know that concept)
inside stalls- eh about again, 1 week
outside stalls- haha I actually never "perfected" this...but I can do 'em
clipper stalls- 3 weeks (still skool them EVERY sesh)
legovers- a week at "most"
around the world- hmmm...again a week
mirage- week n' a half *shrugs*?
osis- haven't worked on this much (heard it's a BIATCH)
butterfly- haven't perfected it yet, but I can hit it now and then...took me like 3 days

sounds like me... heh. I guess it really depends on what you consider basics.jon wrote:3 years and I am still working on the basics ...
I can do the basic 8, (atw's both ways, legover, pickup, mirage, illusion, pixie, and faries), clippers, a few clipper moves and really that's about it. Just play to have fun I'd say. And good luck.

maybe 3 months? for all the dexterity stuff anyways. I didn't really try clippers so much for a while. and butterflys and osis? I'm still not very good, only started hitting butterflys flipside for 3 months or so, and it's been longer than that since I hit my last flipside osis. Today I was proud of myself, I hit a spinning clipper into an osis( all with the same foot)
it really depends on what you call "down" as well.
I don't think I'm a good example because it took me about 18 months to become tiltless and then 2 months to become guiltless (difference between playing with yourself and playing with other people!!)
Of those moves - I would say that I have toe stalls, clipper stalls, legovers, atw, mirage and butterfly down and my inside stalls, outside stalls and osis are still probably lacking (inside stalls are probably down if I ever tried them
)
But that said - I can hit over 20 consecutive osis and over 10 most of the time and I hit moves ending on osis midstring - often mid genuine or even tripless - so it depends on your definition of "down"

I've been freestyling for about 4 months and I just hit dimwalk today for the first time. I'm really close to a bunch of other 4 adds I have all the basics down, I hit pendulums, my osis is terrible, but my strings are really bad because I just prectice hard tricks all the time. I just met Jim Penske and Daryl Genz like 3 weeks ago. I see them inconsistantly but they have improved my game phonomenally!!!! In two weeks I went from hitting pixies, fairies, ATW, pendulums, and toe stalls, to all that plus all delays (besides heel and calf), pick up, leg over, mirage, illusion, butterfly, dimwalk along with a buch of other tricks similar to dimwalk that I am a session or two from hitting.

I still haven't honed my basics down all the way. At least kick wise. I never really kicked hackey sack, so when I got into footbag, I learned stalls despite what other people told me to try first. I wanted (and still want to) learn at my own progression rate and do what moves I feel like trying. I've got my toes and insides down pretty good, same with outsides. I started in February (though I'd kicked footbag a bit before that, but wasn't really serious about it) and learned my toe stalls first, then legovers, mirages, pickups, clippers, ATWs (in and out), then far legovers/pickups, hop over, walk over and such. Now I can do a few 4s and some uptime moves (well, just a couple out of pixie and atomic) and a couple of ducking and diving moves. I still really can't kick, but I don't really care about it that much. I'll learn it whenever I decide to.

cool.....thanks for the replies....glad to know that i am on my way at a reasonable pace.....does anyone else get stupid comments from ignorant people like "Looks like you got way too much time on your hands"?
also finally got osis and butterflies down on my drills where i try and hit them 20 times on each side and catch it with my hand.....i have done osis continuous a couple of times but haven't hit butterfly continuous yet....still cant get it to set right.
anyways thanks for the replies again
