Voting rules for Sick1/Sick3 competitions?

Post by BalinorNZ »

Hey,
Recently there has been some complaining about how one person or another votes, although one persons slightly inaccurate votes (according to the majority atleast) will not count for much after all votes are counted.

My question is, should there be a voting 'guideline' (eg, people should vote based on difficulty of moves, execution and artistic merit - how good it looks) or should people be able to vote how they see fit?

Further more should votes that clearly don't fit under the guideline not be counted? Is there any other way to encourage people not to vote how shoe color or something like that?

What is your opinion?

My opinion is it doesnt matter how anyone votes as long as they dont take in account how easy a trick is for a person.

I mean if vasek hits whirlwind and some guy hits ripwalk, whirlwind is easy for him but it still beats a ripwalk.

Ive seen some people vote bassed on (not to mention any names)

hey that move you hit is a bit easy for you so ..

Also i think that people who enter the competition actually not vote for themselves....but rather just vote on everyone else that participated. IMO this can reduce any bias voting and stuff etc.

Not no name any names... Nic

But saying that flailing looked hard but drifter looked easy is such an odd way to vote. If it looked easy that means the move was executed well. it doesnt mean it WAS easy. I dont know how you do it, but every single time you vote you manage to piss me off. If you are looking for a job and you are in town, i will definitely hire you if i need to be angry.

Oh this is silly. Why don't we just make a rule that only people who agree exactly with me are allowed to vote.

Seriously if you restrict the way people can vote what is the point of having an online competition at all? That's part of the nature of it - just learn to deal with it.

I think the meaning of a vote has been completely lost here. The right to vote for shoe colour is at the very core of the democratic ideal. Guidelines? Yes, lets try and be clear on what we're trying to decide. Not counting the ones that don't follow the guidelines? Christ, that's ridiculas.

A or B sir, but votes for A aren't counted. Brilliant.

And Henry, that was the most convoluted insult I've read in at least a week. Well done.

I agree with Jeremy - this is entirely too silly. People can vote however they want. If someone wants to vote on someone based on their previous entries or their known abilities, that's their perogative. If someone disagrees with that method of voting, they can show it through their vote. I think both ways of voting cater directly to the individual that is submitting the vote.

Nic, Henry voting you last really won't affect you that much. Henry, Nic voting himself higher than you wanted shouldn't affect your vote, but if it does, so be it. Nic, you voted my Sick 1 last month lower than I wanted, and when I talked to you it boiled down to something along the lines of "you don't like pixies." That's fine! I really don't care - if that's how Nic feels, then that's totally cool and I got over that shit a few weeks ago! (Although I still make jokes about it, haha)

Vote however you want - this is OUR competition. This is just too silly. As a sidenote, you did another great job with putting this video together Nic. People just have to learn to vote objectively and not let their emotions ruin the competition. That is all.

My vote is based on several things:

difficulty of trick
difficulty of links (in sick 3s)
style

COOLNESS

that last one is important for me. And yes it IS very subjective.

I'm torn.

On one hand I think, "Ya, people can vote the way they want, if you restrict them then you're essentially picking their votes for them."

On the other hand I think this is a competition. What's the requirements for winning a competition? Why, being the best of course. Now I know the word "best" can mean different things to different people, but since this is a trick competition, it follows that the best trick should win, right?

Well, in footbag what are the basic elements that judges look at to determine a "best trick"? Execution, style, and level of difficulty. Now this level of difficulty is not "how difficult is a trick for that person", (besides I don't know how in the world you would know how hard a trick is for every person???) but it is "how difficult is that trick overall compared to the other tricks". Now people are going to have their opinion's on what's difficult and what's not, but that's where the subjective part comes in.

Now let's say for a moment that every competition in every sport took into account how easy it is for someone to do something. In biking I'd have to say that Lance Armstrong had to ride 20 more miles than the rest of the people because as the Tour de France is, it's too easy for him. Uh, Michael Jorden, for every 2 points you make, we are only gonna count 1 of them because making baskets is too easy for you. Oh ya, Paul Hamm (U.S. gymnastics gold winner), that routine you did was the best routine I've ever seen.....but it looked too easy for you so you only get bronze.

I think you see my point.

If this is going to be a footbag competition and you want people to take it seriously then I'd suggest people vote in line with regular footbag competitions. But in the end this is just an online competition and there are no set rules, so people can vote the way they want, unless told to do so otherwise.

So if voters think tall people look better playing footbag then sorry Henry, you're outta luck. If they think hot people with smokin' bodies look better playing footbag, then I guess I win everytime. :D

Seriously though, I don't think I would want to enter a competition that votes based on how easy a trick is to someone, even if that means I'm last place because I have the worst trick even though I worked the hardest at it. So if you don't like it the way it is now I'd say tuff, don't enter, but I think if you really want to change the system then just ask without being hostile.

My momma used to say, life is like a box.......errr I mean.....it never hurts to ask.

Unless of course you ask a woman if she's pregnant and she's not. 8O

exactly my mindset.

^^^^^

If you base it on how "easy it is to peel off a __________ after that set" Then thats one of the worst ways to judge.

oh that was way wayy WAY to easy for you to peel off that symp double down after at surging ducking. I am gonna have to place you below me cause it was hard for me to peeel of mirage after fairy set.

I totally disagree with some of the things in this thread. This is a fun "competition" but *most* of us are not "qualified" judges with experience. I think people should be able to vote how they want to since this is our "competition." If we need to change the name of the monthly events to "Sick 3 Happy Fun Time" then so be it, but discounting someone's vote because you disagree with it, or voting a different way because you read someone else's vote is WRONG.

I think honestly that there should be a voting page, but that the discussions of people's actual votes shouldn't occur until after the voting period has ended. That would end a few of these squabbles.

exactly - is this just a fun competition or is it serious?

If it's serious we should have a pre selected panel of judges to vote and nobody else should be allowed. In my opinion that would destroy the nature of the competition.

I think it's fun because it involves everybody regardless of skill. Even my brother can vote on which combos he does and doesn't like. It's the group involvement that make the online comps so cool. They are not serious events - you don't get anything for winning. I would say the respect of the voters but I would say I already respect all the people already.

This silly arguing about who voted for who and why is so stupid. I'd suggest you grow up a little. I remember when Aaron voted one of my combos 3rd because he thought it was "too one sided" and I briefly commented that I disagreed since the combo was blurry whirl>fog>dominatrix but I'm certainly not going to hold a grudge about it and I'm glad to see somebody was willing to voice a different opinion. It's certainly something to think about (is that combo one sided?). I think you can learn something about judging real competitions when judging these but there are some significant differences to the extent that sometimes I don't vote as if I were judging the event in competition.

As Max said - I think in these online comps with as many attempts as you want. Coolness is one of the most important factors. Unique and interesting moves are what people should be aiming for. In a real competition I would say that while that's important - the limit on the number of attempts means that players should make sure they hit a move or combo - so should mainly stick to "safe" moves. I also think how often you've seen a move shouldn't be too much of an issue when judging a real competition. And of course being able to rewind the player, watch it again in slow mo and freeze frame it is something that can't really be done judging a competition. When judging a competition I'd also say that speed of judging is important. Players don't want to be waiting for hours for you to tell them the results - if possible the judges should give a score with in a minute. Judging the online competitions gives you a much better chance to analyse the combos and moves which is a fairly diferent situation.

From a marine perspective:

Always give your best, man the fuck up if your hurting, and don't complain. If you're doing poorly, take it as an example to go bigger and better. Wipe the sand out of your clit, and suck it the fuck up.

I think that what is fucking up the voteing is all the stupid coments people put at the end of their voteing.

JUST VOTE... its one thing to say "that was realy slick", but over half the coments are like "that looked to easy" or "I expect better" or "its a refraction not a dyno(screw you for screwing jorden J)"

JUST VOTE and no bullshit and this might all go away.

This is an option, we could make a rule that no comments can be made about the entrys untill voting closes (1 or 2 weeks after release) but then there would obviously be alot less comments made about the entrys, and many of the compeditors like having their stuff proped or critiqued :s.
We could make a poll about this too :D

As I recall with the first competitions we had a rule of not commenting on combos but nobody liked it and we found that being able to comment was much more fun. If people are worried about getting negative comments about what they've hit they shouldn't submit it. Some amount of self confidence is needed in these things.

Just put me in charge. I know what looks good and what is pure crap. My opinion is regarded by many as the end all beat all and extremely accurate. I am the Simon Cowell of Sick 3/Sick 1 judging. I am fair, balanced and RIGHT 100% of the time as is proven time after time by my many wonderful and insightful posts.

Give me a chance guys, I know you won't be disappointed.

... Yeah Right!

I agree with Nate, vote how you want. When or where else will you be given the opportunity to judge a comp without having the powers that be over your shoulder checking your marks and ensuring you vote according to "set in stone" rules.
