For the sake of public interest, keep it out of PMs.

I learnt all that stuff when I was studing music (I played jazz - alto sax) but I've pretty much forgotten most of it except the basic stuff.

sweet replies!!!

samo... the cycle of 5ths is right but its f# not f....
you should learn your cycle of 4ths... thats more usefull in tonal music anyway.

c f Bb eb ab db gb/f# b e a d g

play your scales in that order. starting on any of them.

easier topic:
what is your favorite mode to jam in??

Not for classical music, bitch.

c g d a e b/cb f#/gb db/c# ab eb bb f c*orgasm* That's right, I play C twice.

I'm just kidding, I'm all about circle of 4ths (it took me longer than it should to actually remember them in reverse order).

Did you know that? CIrcle of 4ths, CYcle of 5ths. Interesting.

I basically like to start with the hat a kick drum, add a little sub for that BOOOOOOM, and layer on some minor thirds mixed with diminished 5ths.

Theory is too hard, I watched this infomercial, real players just play.

I guess mozart, herbie hancock, miles davis, norah jones, weezer, radiohead, jon scofield, john coltrain, and the max weinburge 7 aren't real musicians....

real musicians learn everything, than forget it all and just play.

you know what a dim 5th is????? sell out

Yeah, I'm a music major...I'm a fan of "why do things sound that way" or "why does that sound good" as opposed to simply "that sounds good."

Theory is pretty much engrained into my system. ie: If I'm playing E Locrian, I don't even think about the fact that it's just F major starting on the seventh scale degree. I don't bother with those extra steps, I just play E Locrian.

Quiz!

Which chord extension is sharped in a maj13 chord? And why? :P
Why do tritone substitutions work?
If you play Locrian of "Melodic Dominant", what scale do you get?
What major scale is Ab Aeolian derived from?
How many sharps are in the key of G####? *

*Theoretical music Theory. Gotta love it.

Cb.

Who actually plays in Cb instead of B? I don't know.

I should probably give some people some time but f@ck it.

1) In a major 13 chord the 4th or 11th degree (same thing) is raised, a natural 11 would clash with the 3rd. though in guitar voicings the #11 is often omitted because of its limited range
2)tritone subs work because the critical tones are the same...for example the 3rd and 7th of a G7 chord is b and f, the same as the 7th and 3rd of a Db7 chord. the root and 5th of the tritone chord ends up being the b5 and b9 of the original chord...making the tritone sub an altered chord.. but I digress
3)I'm not particuarly familiar with the term "melodic dominant". If you mean the 7th mode of the "melodic minor" you get super locrian, also known as diminished whole tone(because it starts as a dimished and ends as a wholetone), or suploc by geeks like me. This scale is used over altered dominant chord so perhaps you just friodian slipped when you were typing?what exactly did you mean by melodic dominat kev???
4) steve got it. Ab is the relative minor of Cb.
5) 29 sharps or simply 5 sharps, because G 4sharp is simply B.

Good stuff kev I look forward to more and maybe I'll throw some your way!

Melodic Dominant:

1 2 3 4 5 b6 b7

And superlocrian = altered, right? I haven't heard that term before.

here you go kev/dave (these will be tough  )

1)what is the difference between the italian, french and german augmented sixth chords, and why are they called augmented sixth chords?

2)What scale would you use over a C9(b5,#5) chord

3)What is the Dameron turnaround

4) name two common 2 measure, 4 chord turnarounds to the ii chord.

5) what is a median substitute.

dude thats just the 5th mode of the melodic minor scale. 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale is more common, wich is spelled:
1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7.
wich is commonly used over dominant chords in a minor ii V i.

So to answer you're original question the 7th mode of the "melodic dominant" scale is 4th mode melodic minor.. witch is the lydian dominant scale. Is lydian dominant the answer????

and yeah superlocrain is another name for the altered scale.

Some of the best musicians out there didn't know shit about theory, re: Jimi Hendrix, among others. Theory isn't a necessary requirement to be a solid player, all you need is natural ability and the guts to practice for hours at a time.
