Who invented?

Post by Jeremy »

This is a topic where if you're curious who was the first person to hit a move you post it here.

I was wondering who hit alpha symp fury first. I hit it back in about october 2004 I think (but I might be way off :P) but I'm pretty sure Felix and Vasek both hit it before me - probably by a long time. And maybe somebody like Sunil?

I'm calling the move "Danger Mouse" anyway - unless one of the people who hit it before me objects. It's an injoke but also Danger Mouse rocks. :D

It should be called Oedipus or something, with it being Your Mom in reverse.

Also, I'm against naming any non-ground breaking trick.

I`m also against naming tricks like alpha fury, just for the record.

And back in 2003 worlds, Sunil was hitting frontside fission and stuff like that real easily, and that was before felix or vasek were really doing any hard furious stuff, so Id say Sunil is very likely the first person to have hit fs fury.

Blurry whirling swirl was Kenny. I`m 99% sure of this. he hit it way back on Raw Shred, which was a 1995 video. I`ve also seen Sunil hit this, as well as Vasek, Ales, and several others.

Alpine food... I hit that back in 2001. But who knows how clean it was. Honza was the first person to really hit it consistent.

As for the first 6 add trick, I guess technically that would be Kenny, cause he hit outside kick double spinning osis way back. If you count x-spin, thats 6 adds. Sort of reminds me of the first 7 add... everybody thinks it was Holton with Gauntlet, but that was back when nobody counted spinning pdx. Cause if you count spinning pdx, I think Brian MacKenzie hit the first 7, cause he hit gangsta party back in the summer of 99, or 98.

hmm, in my opinion you guys take move names too seriously. Anyway you can call it what you like. When I hit that move I'll say I hit "danger mouse" and when you hit it you can call it something else. :D

But that doesn't make any sense, and Danger Mouse isn't even that good.

Something like Oedipus, or Freud would be a PERFECT name for it. I actually loll'ed when Kevin mentioned it because it was so perfect.

Rev up:
Almost certainly Darryl Genz. Darryl has been doing this from a dragon since at least 1999. He has been doing dragon-reverse-swirls (snap dragon) since at least 1994, when I first began playing with him. It would be tough for me to say exactly when he first did a reverse swirling pick-up. We could ask him...

I think Rippen invented barfly and Ellis Piltz invented montage. Not sure about clipper stall - I'd assume Kenny because he invented pretty much all the basic moves but I've never heard that he specifically invented it.

I have no idea how you can do a stepping ps pincher - infact I think it's impossible since I wouldn't give pincher a pdx add or a symposium add.

Anssi - I'm just saying that "danger mouse" is what I'm going to call the move. So if you see me post that somewhere - that's what I'm talking about. I personally think that most people take move names way too seriously and don't really care what people think of that move name or any other. That's why I've named something like 11 moves "oh wheely"

nuke symp dlo, sailing op dlo, sailing op torque, sailing ducking whirl, sailing symp double down, sailing op flail, sailing op drifter, sailing gyro mirage, sailing ss toe blur. I think there are more but I forget. You can call those moves whatever you like - that's just what I called them - as the probable inventor of those moves and if people don't tell you that they've hit a move when you ask they're giving up naming rights in my opinion.

I *don't* believe that I invented this trick, but I do believe that its origin goes back much earlier than Daryl hitting it in '99. In fact, in mid '99 many of us in the Madison, Wisconsin footbag scene were experimenting with reverse swirling sets (at the time our nomenclature didn't clearly differentiate between a reverse swirling set and normal swirling set simply because we believed normal swirling set to be much more difficult if not impossible - we were of course wrong).

Here is an excerpt from a post that I sent to the old .org mailing list in October of '99 (you can check the archives to dig up the original post and related discussion: http://list.footbag.org/majordomo/index/freestyle):

********************************
...
A couple other comments from the rarely vocal Madison-scene:
1. Has anyone tried to hit a shooting-opposite side blender? Seems like a
pretty attainable 7 adder (even though its add count is disputable)
2. We've been calling fairy mirage a "fear" (like a smear) and a fairy
reverse mirage a "fudge" (like a smudge - kinda dumb but along the same
lines as the above). Anyone like these names?
3. Has anyone named a swirling pick-up? We've been calling it a
stick-up... in fact has anyone mastered the swirling set? Hard stuff...

That's all
Later
Matt Kain
********************************

What I called a "swirling pick-up" would today be more explicitly known as a reverse swirling same side pickup. Where I say "swirling set" I was actually referring to "reverse swirling set" (remember that the original post was made years before the now standard attempts to disambiguate terminology). As I recall, it was during the summer of '99 that we began fiddling with this set, and at least three of us (myself, Matt Roman, and Aaron Edgerton) had mastered or hit several reverse swirling moves including reverse swirling same side pickup (which was a club favorite because it was both stylish and relatively easy to integrate into the middle of a run).

Anyway, just thought I would add a little history.
