I can't believe there is so little talk about this on the forum. It's hardcore. I totally missed it but it's pretty bizzare. I mean what I heard was predicitions of how bad it was going to be. Next I hear it's fucking chaos - from what I've heard it sounds like making the predictions was pointless and the government just ignored them - surely the deaths and following events were completely preventable. If I knew about what was going to happen living in Tasmania, Australia - why the fuck did the US Government or who ever is in charge organise anything before the disaster hit - ie. evacuations or aid or having solidiers and people to help out already ready before the event happens). The media here has blasted the US government sooooooooooooooooooooo much. From what's been reported they sound so incompetent. Because most of the people who didn't leave didn't because they were to poor to - or at least that's what I've heard - so many political analysts etc. have really got stuck into the whole US society. It's amazing that people could either not have the forsight or just be so amazingly self centered to not do anything about the potential tens of thousands of people who were probably going to die - and did. I know I criticise the US a lot but fucking hell, I had no idea that things were has terrible as what has been reported. I really can't imagine living in a county where it gets predicted that thousands of people are going to be killed and people don't try and stop that from happening. I don't know - I haven't heard a lot about it yet but it seems like every editorial in every newspaper - even the very conservative right wing papers is very very critical of the US right now. Obviously there is a lot of sympathy for the deaths - especially considering how easily they could have been prevented.

I wouldn't say that the deaths were completely preventable, a full evacuation of New Orleans would be impossible. But I agree that they could have done a better job in many ways.

and usually in hurricanes you are alright to stay in a shelter in the city. Its not like for EVERY hurricane, the whole city/state evacuates! This was THE worst case scenario, and i dont think it was predicted that the whole city of New Orleans would be completely under 10 + feet of water.

Well that's exactly what was reported here - as I recall it was not only the lead story on the SBS world news but also got big coverage in the paper and it was the only prediction that was mentioned in the news - that the whole city would be completely flooded - they went into the details of how the city is below sea level and showed the Mayor or Governor or some official person saying that that would be a really serious disaster and that it would take months to drain the water and years to repair the damage and that he was praying that it wouldn't be that bad. I think they also mentioned that it was one of the biggest hurricanes ever seen and that the wind speeds were 50km/h faster than the hurricane that hit Darwin (a city in Australia) a while ago (cyclone Tracy)
