Well, the 7th annual Hackrifice Footbag Tournament is come and passed, and this was the best one yet! The first thing we need to do is thank the sponsors, because it's really them that made this so awesome! SO big thanks to Kustom Kulture, Hempyrean, Urban Bakery, Uptown Bowling Lanes, Farside Productions and Freedom Footbags! With out your support, the event could have never gone ahead.
Saturday was nuts! The Djs, Dexx, Domian, Kr!mson and the one and only Polly, rocked the house. Spectators were out in full force, and i believe total spectators for the day was around 100! Awesome! Global News came out (Big thanks to Jess by the way!) and got some shots of the guys playing and i did a little interview and we made the 6pm news! All in all it was great, BUT i know what you guys really want are the results, so with out further ado...

I just finished a write-up of everything, but I am not at home, and the first half I wrote there on the first night, so I am going to wait to post it all until I can post it all together. A few highlights, though:

Rory is hilarious, Byrin is super amazing nice and, like...unbelievable at footbag!!! Kevin Regamey is Kevin Regamey. Brett only gets better and more bothsided every time I see him, and JP, though he couldn't play much, was really fun to hang out with too!
It was a blast, and I had sooo much fun staying with everyone and BOWLING for 3 hours to Champion's League and Fourkast on projection screen!!!!
Next year will only be better!

HACKRIFICE 05 REPORT
September 2nd, 2005
7pm: I'm in the parking lot of Home Depot, about to get slips and labels printed for my Hackrifice 2004 DVDs to give out as prizes tomorrow; I get a phone call from Byrin Wylie -- "they"'re on the outskirts of the city. After mishearing that they are on Portage and "Satan", I give them directions to my house. I end up having troubles printing, and Marita (who's driving me) runs back to my house to get something I forgot and happens to meet Byrin, Brett Campbell, and Kevin Regamey as they arrive at my house. She rushes back and gets me and my prints. Somewhere in between I've talked to Andrew, who meets us shortly after we arrive back home, with Rory Dawson and Jean-Paul Phillipe, who he's been with all day, and already jammed with at The Forks.
We make some calls and some quick dinner and head out to the UofM sciences hallway for our 7th Annual Hackrifice Open 2005 official "pre-jam". We meet Mark, Jess, and Derek there and shred until about 12:30. After this, most of us drive out to Boston Pizza for drinks, we split up (Andrew, Rory, Kevin, and JP; and Erik, Marita, Byrin, and Brett) and return home for some more dinner and bed.
Meeting Byrin has been a highlight so far. He's sooo nice, unbelievably modest, and busts huuuuuge! My favourite part of the evening, though, was definately Rory; just Rory. He's hilarious -- plus he's amazing at footbag, THE MOST FUN PLAYER TO PLAY WITH, EEEVVVVEEERRR!!! And he oozes crazy-unique style!!
Andrew was also sporting our 2005 tshirt, which we designed together: awesome!

I woke up at 9:30 or 10:00, grabbed Sick 03 from my closet and went downstairs and put it on the TV to wake up Byrin and Brett with. Byrin woke up just as I was putting it in, but I turned it on and let it play, like I do every year. I called Marita and then went to pick her up, while I let Byrin and Brett eat some breakfast and clean up and stuff.
We got back and I called Andrew, to find out what was happening and when we were meeting at the club. He said that they were leaving right away for 11, and to be there before 12. I called Derek and let him know, and then we got ready and moved out in Brett's station wagon.
We arrived, and saw Rory and Kevin trying to erect a tent for the DJs. We helped out and got the tent up over its frame. Scott Ellenberger showed up and we sat on the ground and hung out while Andrew ran around figuring everything out. The DJs arrived, and we set up a tabe and chairs for them in the tent. We were extremely frustrated to learn that Andrew of the community club hadn't left the power on for us, as he promised he would, and that we could have to find an alternate power source for the DJs' equipment. It took us until 2 or 3 hours later to finally jack up a series of extension cords across the backlane to the nearest apartment power outlet (after Andrew ran up to the building to ask if it was okay -- it was).
Warmup and shred ensued. At about 1:30 a reporter from Global news arrived with a camera, filmed some shred, asked some questions, got a quick interview, which I asked Andrew to do (and he performed wonderfully), and left just as quickly. Later the msuic got rolling, and Andrew announced competition registration. He had made up registration forms, which will make it easy for us to contact players, especially since we plan to send out some prizes still, post-tournament. Marita was an amazing helper who handed out forms and helped-out all around. Andrew brought his box of 60 Hackrifice tshirts, which we handed out with registration. More shred followed, and competition began at about 3, an hour later.
We had about 10 competitors in shred 30, and about the same or a little less in sick 3 and big 1. We filmed and judged later, at Andrew's house. The results, as I remember, were:

We must have left at about 6:30 because Brett, Byrin, Marita, Brett's friend, and myself arrived home at about 7:15, and Andrew, Rory, Kevin, JP, Jess, Derek, etc arrived at Andrew's around the same time. We sat around for a bit, and tried to watch Kevin's Shredmonton video -- sadly the CD-ROM on that computer is shot. Byrin had a quick shower, we got ready, and made it to Andrew's for about 8, where we were welcomed by the crew watching Sick 03 again. Derek bought some orange juice, and Andrew's mom must have put a ton of work into an amazing spaghetti and meatsauce dinner that everyone thoroughly enjoyed (even the vegetarian Brett Campbell!), topped with brownies post-meal.
Afterward Andrew, Byrin, and I judged the shred 30 on his iBook, from my and Kevin's footage, which took us until about 9:50, while everyone else watched some videos upstairs. I called the Uptown Lanes, saying that we would be a bit late to bowling and we left immediately, finishing up our judging on the car trip there. We arrived, waited a bit for everyone to show, got our shoes, started up Champion's League on the projector screen and went upstairs to bowl. It was a blast; we bowled for about 3 hours, or longer, while watching shred videos (Champion's League and Fourkast). We ordered pizza and drinks and had tons of fun, until we left at about 1:30am. Brett went to stay at his friend's place, so Marita, Derek, Jess, Byrin, and I walked back to my place (everyone else left at the same time, with Andrew). Joel showed up about an hour in to bowl also, and my brother Konrad.

I went out back to say goodbye to Marita, who was going home for the day, and when I came back in my dad came and told me that Andrew had just come to the door and asked for me, he (my dad) said that I had left and so Andrew went to chase me down. "Andrew" turned out to be Brett, who came back within minutes. We hung out a little, I called Andrew to find out what was happening, and Derek had to run home for something.
We left shortly after and drove to the community club. We just hung around the parking lot for a bit, talking, while Kevin Regamey and I filmed a little. Then we went over to the hockey rink and started warming up. We had arrived about 12 and played for a couple hours, until Brett had to leave with his crew (everyone but Rory) back for Saskatoon (Byrin and Kevin bussed from Edmonton to Brett's). It was a sweet session, the highlights of which being a circle of just Byrin and Derek, and then a circle of just Derek and Andrew. Derek was busting HUUUUUUGE tricks and combos. He hit a beast, Andrew hit a new beast, and Byrin was hitting huge tricks all over the place.
After everyone left, the remaining Hackrifice crew went to finish the net competition half-assedly, minus myself (Erik), Derek, and Rory. Rory and I continued a toe inspinning session that we began on the sidelines previously, after a request from a former Byrin/Rory/Andrew circle to bust gyro mirage back-to-back. We decided to make a toe spinning video, and Derek offered to help film. After 3 attempts to film (we discovered 3 times in a row, after busting our huge combos, that the camera wasn't filming!!) we played for another hour or so until everyone else but Andrew, who was driving us home, was gone. We each hit multiple combos, which we were super stoked about, which will star in a super-sweet toe-spinning Hackrifice special!!
Rory's flight was for 7pm, and they dropped me off home before hanging out at Joel's place for a bit before driving to the airport. The end.

Then we went over to the hockey rink and started warming up. We had arrived about 12 and played for a couple hours, until Brett had to leave with his crew (everyone but Rory) back for Saskatoon (Byrin and Kevin bussed from Edmonton to Brett's). It was a sweet session, the highlights of which being a circle of just Byrin and Derek, and then a circle of just Derek and Andrew. Derek was busting HUUUUUUGE tricks and combos. He hit a beast, Andrew hit a new beast, and Byrin was hitting huge tricks all over the place.
After everyone left, the remaining Hackrifice crew went to finish the net competition half-assedly, minus myself (Erik), Derek, and Rory. Rory and I continued a toe inspinning session that we began on the sidelines previously, after a request from a former Byrin/Rory/Andrew circle to bust gyro mirage back-to-back. We decided to make a toe spinning video, and Derek offered to help film. After 3 attempts to film (we discovered 3 times in a row, after busting our huge combos, that the camera wasn't filming!!) we played for another hour or so until everyone else but Andrew, who was driving us home, was gone. We each hit multiple combos, which we were super stoked about, which will star in a super-sweet toe-spinning Hackrifice special!!
Rory's flight was for 7pm, and they dropped me off home before hanging out at Joel's place for a bit before driving to the airport. The end.

its me the frenchie who made it all the way to Winnipeg...
so i know its been a long time but ill try to write how the tournie went to me.
First of all I was in the okanagan valley picking fruits when I saw that there was a Hackrifice tournie, I had missed Shredmonton, and I was mad about that, so I decided to go to Winnipeg no matter what it takes. Before going to Winnipeg I had been off from work for 2 weeks, because the cherry picking season mid-august. i was on Vancouver Island a week and a half before the tournament. i went back to the Okanagan valley, picked prunes for 9 hours, I made 150$ in those 9 hours which was really good, considering I made 16$ an hour no taxes deducted... So I spent 2-3 days with some friends.
On the monday afternoon, beginning of the week the tournament would happen, I left Osoyoos hitch-hiking. I didnt make it that far on the first day. I ended up sleeping in my tarp and sleeping bag under the stars by a church on the first night, during the night I was awaken twice by people nearby me, I was sleeping under the lights which wasnt very smart of me because people could have been a major problem when youre a frenchie travelling in a redneck filled country. the second day I was at Lethbridge, Alberta, I spent the night by the highway by a pumpjack, on of those things that pump oil out of the ground. The next day I made it to Moose Jaw, and thats when I got my eye injury. On that morning I decided to put my contact lenses on, so I got the ride to Moose Jaw eventually and the guy, a 26 year old oil rig driller invited me to his parents to have supper, the supper was the best meal I had this summer. After that we went to his home, we rented Sin City and watched it, but before going to bed I scratched my eye trying to remove my contact lenses, I was doing it without a mirror n tryed to hard to pinch the lense, so my eye got irritated. On the next day, I made it to winnipeg, that was a thursday.
I went to the youth hostel because I couldnt join Andrew. So we went clubbin with some people from the hostel that night, I set up a meet up with Andrew so he would come and take me from the hostel to anywhere to do anything before the meet up with the other players.When he came to get me, Rory was already there, so after unloading my things at Andrew's, andrew,rory and myself we went on a tour de winnipeg. Andrew showed us a lot of places, and we ended up shreddin for 1-2 hours at the forks.
Thats when everything started to get out of hand, first of all as I said previously, I was fruit picking all summer long in the Okanagan,where the normal daily temperature is 30 degres celsius, so when your off from work, normally around noonish, you dont have that much energy to shred, also I didnt have a shred partner all summer long, so I always ended up playing by myself of kicking with other people, but I never played for more than hour all summer long. So playing with 2 better players than myself got me to push my limits and after we finisher our session, I could feel the shin splints really badly, and my eye was also starting to bother me, all the sweat and since I was tired it got worst. That night we went to the university to have a session, at that point, my eye was really bothering me, I ended up sitting almost the whole session. I got some small runs, but playing with only one eye wasnt really helping. But I got to see the people who inspired me to start playing more actively, the Hackrifice crew. Seeing Andrew bust hard was really nice, also Derek was amazing for a guy who doesnt play much. Erik consistency is amazing, I think that he has really nice ducks and dives, hes the one who inspired me to start ducking n diving moves. I also got to see everyone from Alberta n mr. short shorts himself,Brett Campbell. To say the truth I was the only intermediate guy there, every other guy were open category. I also got to see Jess play, she his a nice tiltless player with nice 10 contacts runs everytime. That night, I started wearing a home-made eye patch.
Which didnt really help apart from blocking the light which was hurting my eye like crazy. Also the patch was stopping me from having 3d sight, that you need to play. I remember trying magellan and after the pixie my 2nd dex was done before the bag even started going down.
After the jam, we went to Boston Pizza, there I wasnt in the mood for anything, my eye was hurting really bad, I was really tired from the hitchhiking I had been doing all week long.
After a bad night of sleep, I always woke up to put tear drops in my eye, we had breakfast, I had lost my appetite because of the pain I felt even if everything was available at Andrews place to have the best breakfast ever. I really enjoyed Brett style, so smooth with him nothing seems to be going too fast.After the day was over, I went to the drugstore n bought ointment for my eye, that closed the deal with that. I should have done that during the day with anyone......DUMB FRENCHIE....
That night we got pissed, at the bowling alley, I bought a 24 with Brett n his friend in the afternoon and I only drank 1 so I had 7 to sneak in the bowling alley, which I did as I always do when i go in bars. So we drank my free beer then went for a bowl hit in the alley behind the bowling alley. I dont know what wronmg with me n bowling but I think I dont take it seriously, I always change my ways of throwinf the ball. I think it funnier this way. Bowling with shred videos is really awesome, you play then when you dont you can watch amazing players shred it up before you on the big screen. Before leavin Joel,Andrew n me had a beer shotgun style, which really fucked me up good. then it was a nighty night of sleep until the next morning..
the next morning we went to the venue for a final shred session, Derek was going big for the camera so was everyone else, me, I was hung over n had shin splints, but that day, I ended up doing my first sidewalk ever yahoo... Later that afternoon,I ended up leavin with Brett for Saskatoon, he was driving half the trip, we ended up smokin some bowls in the car which was nice, since I hadnt been smokin that much since I got to Winnipeg, damn thos footbag athletes whodont smoke. I did a bracelet for him during the trip and I also did one for Byrin, Byrin's a shred bracelet with a 32 panel footbag and red n white hemp just like his shoes...
the next day, we did nothin, but before Byrin n Kevin left we has a shred session in the bus depot, I did a couple of sidewalks and even did one mid-string. Damn I was Happy!! On the same day we cleaned Bretts car n went to the movies to see MURDERBALL, wheelchair rugby ^players are so BADASS. We had a good time, thanks BRETT!! The next morning, I went with Brett to the Universityof Saskatchewan where I got a free Huskie t-shirt, free meal n got to meet his friends from school. Then at 11 am I was by the side of the highway before gettin picked up by a female french canadian trucker who got me to 20 km before Calgary.... Then on the next day, I was back in the Okanagan valley before starting my final month in BC before next year!!!!!!!!!!! Apple picking was good I averaged 12-14$$ an hour overall. But at the end I was doing 16-18 $$ per hours!
So after my first footbag tournament was over I was really happy how it turned out even if I was injured for the tournament, and by the way, it took me a whole week before my shin splints stopped hurting.
Id like to thank Andrew who made it possible for me to have such a good time,by going out of his way to do everything possible for us to feel like home. hey erik, no worries about the eyedrops, I had to learn from my mistakes, and I really had a great time, thats the important thing.
Dont worry about the next shred session, Ill be going through Winnipeg next year because Im going once more to the Okanagan to pick fruits I even might be going to Europe after that to shred it up on the Euro scene
