Returning to the bag
9/14/2005 9:40AM

I am a 31 year old Seattle native now living in Highlands Ranch, Colorado (about 15 miles south of Denver). I bought a pair of Arthur Ashe shoes and a Tricks of the Trade video when I was 15 and played like mad back in the day. Took a two year hiatus in the middle of my college years, but played quite a bit the two years before and after that while in college. Since joining the corporate "whirl"-"illusion"-vortex I really haven't played seriouslyin about 7-8 years.... so dusty to say the least. I have gained about 10 pounds (now 165) and decided enough was enough. Too much time programming at the computer is a bad thing and so I decided to go back to my love of footbag as a means to get healthly and have more fun.

I am creating this for myself to help track progress and have some accountability (even if it is imagined) by making my self post my progress. I figure it might help other 30 somethings that are coming off a career starting hiatus where 80 hour weeks didn't jive with too much exercise.

Current status: After 5 days in my "comeback" I have most my old 2 ADD skills back--except my nemesis the clipper, which I always avoided due to my ankles super poor flexibility from so many twisted and torn ankles in soccer which always healed up, but left my ankle even less flexible--but I think that flexibilty will be needed but shouldn't have been such a deterent, so that is where I am at. I want to smooth out the rest of the 2 ADD moves over the coming week and pickup the clipper in the next 3-4 weeks and then start heading into the sets and 3 ADD realm of the unknown. Biggest issue now is just getting my legs stamina back as well, so been doing a lot of very repetitive sessions with the same move over and over (legover, mirage, toe stalls, etc.). I also want to increase my left sides parity with my right--I worked on my right mirage WAY too much back in the day and it shows now. But I hit two left side mirages very clean this morning, so that seems to be coming into check. So yeah, I have played 5 days in a row and am attempting to get some play time in everyday possible during my reintroduction and to try and accelerate stamina growth. I am also going to check out some "power yoga" or ashtanga yoga as a means to cross train and bolster both strength, flexibility and stamina. Not too into the hard core spiritual aspects of yoga, but defn like the breathing/strength aspects--will report on how that goes as well.

So with that, I have 512MB of mp3 on my ipod shuffle (great for dumping in the pocket and forgetting about it--it is so light) and I am ready for some playing--my skills are too weak to use the verb "shred" yet ;)

Stay tuned...

Hi there - Let me be the first to say welcome back to footbag! I live in Denver and shred quite often. Stephen Barnes and I have a footblog here: http://www.modified.ca/footbag/viewtopic.php?t=5700 and we try to play together at least once a week. If you're ever interested in joining us, shoot me an e-mail or a PM and we'll try to work something out.

Also, I couldn't help notice your name and would like to add that I was a huge Phish fan back in the day. I saw a handful of shows from 96 - 01 and at one point I had over a hundred shows on disc. Did you catch many shows?

Kickin it on a Court

So yeah, I do love the band Phish and saw a number of shows right up until the end. Unfortunately I had to catch the live webcast of the last shows--but they were pretty cool as well and had the same group feel as kicking bag with folks. Anytime you get a group of peaceful people with a common interest it makes for a good time--so that applies to phish or footbag.

On a related thought, music and footbag for me have always been inseperable as I am sure for most. Anyone have any good lesser known music to listen to on the shuffle while playing? I have been listening to Raq (kind of phish like, and will be here in october i beleive), Raul Midon, Boston (ok, so I am old school--its just that this is the stuff I had pumping in my ears when I first started playing footbag), led, phish, marley, bright eyes, keller williams, jason mraz, and a few others.

Lastly, I found a tennis court that is abandoned in the mornings, so I got an hour in this morning and now I need to pack mad fast to make my flight to boston. So this is about 7 consecutive days of play and the legs are feeling gradually better with each day. Also, I was able to start hitting tricks more consistently like 3 mirages in a row real smooth and 2 in a row on my weaker left side. Starting to eyeball the three ADD tricks I want to work on, mostly double toe stalls. Also spent about 10 minutes on the clipper and actually got 2 out of about what felt like a 100 ;) 2%, kinda sucks. Also went ahead on my old lavers and cut the inside canvas out yesterday--not sure if it will help to much as they were pretty broken in. Not sure I want to tear into my brand new red lavers either as I am not sure if it signifigantly helps and two if it will greatly decrease the life of my shoe--any thoughts?

Ok, this is my lame little post. I had a private message exchange with Stephen Barnes and will post any denver related topics to the D-Town blog at http://modified.ca/footbag/viewtopic.php?t=5700. But will be keeping my sorry journal of getting back into the sport and what I anticipate to be slower then average progress up through more difficult tricks.

Talks to you.

Yo, cutting out the canvas helps a TON. It doesn't really effect the life of the shoe at all, as the mesh is pretty strong. But if you cut through the mesh, it will continue to unwravel unless you stick some glue around the edges of the hole, so that is good to do.

Quick Update

Post by phishery »

Trying to break the silence here quickly. I was in Boston for three days and managed to kick at night for an hour 2/3 nights. Stayed in a fat hotel called Marlowe for a business deal and make a little progress in my game, but mostly around getting my stamina back up. Managed 6 mirages in a row, so I am slowly feeling the control coming back as well.

Today (Monday) I woke up feeling tighter in my legs then ever--not even sure why as I didn't play at all on Sunday. Anyhow, after 45 minutes of exercises including 100 toe stalls, as many inside as I could pull, etc. and then all the 2 Adds I know (only ones I can't hit consistently right now are illusion and clipper) I turned in.

Hopefully this was just a warm up for the week of the legs just feeling way too tired, but we'll see. I did cut my Red lavers but just realized I cut the inside on one and the outside on the other. Is it recommended to cut it out of both sides? I assumed it was just insides, but for my red lavers it will be both now. Anyhow, that will happen tonight.

some people cut both the inside and the outside. there are advantages to both. if you do a lot of outside tricks (and ultimately dragon tricks) it could help bag feel, but if you dont, it is good to leave them on for support.

there is nothing wrong with cutting both, just make sure you do the toes

Alright then one more mod....

Post by phishery »

Well the silence didn't mean I wasn't playing lots. I have been getting a daily sessions in and trying to make it no less then 45 minutes daily. Anyhow, good stuff. I can feel some semblance of stamina coming back and can string all the two adds I can pull (illusion and clipper is still elusive).

I have been practicing the inside stall like crazy and have been stretching my ankles quite a bit but could probably do it more--just hard to remember to try and break your ankles every 30 minutes

Never mentioned it but I am 31 and have had diabetes type I for 27 of the 31 and I have been trying a new program out that has been killing my blood sugars. Once I get that figured out I think my ability to play footbag (at least have more desire to exercise in general) will go up.

I am doing 100 toe stalls for warm up and then 10 inside stalls each foot alternating back and forth. Then do as many mirages in a row both sides until I am tired. Then legovers, pickups, illusions, and then the nemesis clipper stall until I am done--usually only getting a clean one or two out of 50.

Dang, I thought I had made allthe mods necessary with the inside/outside--oh well, the toe's are coming out. As an FYI, a stitch picker makes the begining of the job much easier and less dicey--thanks to my crafty wife for finding me hers.

Also, I have a brother in law who designs shoes for Nike. No kidding. I was giving him the low down on the sport and the unique situation with shoes and all the mods. Here is our Conversation posted for all to enjoy--it has been edited a bit to remove certain irrelevant and illegal (just kidding, well sort of  ) parts of the conversation. Unfortunately it is a threaded email with interlaced responses by me so it might be a bit hard to read but hopefully interesting. If adidas doesn't want to pay attention to footbaggers perhaps Nike does.

No probs on the repsonse time--life is WAY too busy. I have embedded some coments below in red.... Good conversation.

Sorry for the delayed response,

Love the shoe mods and the whole concept of minimal shoes. Building knock-offs is easy except for the volume issue. To open up new molds for the outsole components is a few thousand dollars per size. Might be to build a very similar shoe with all the same charictaristics but with a swoosh on the side. Then I could order some parts and have some uppers sewn together that you could test out.

Yeah, that is exactly what they are...mimmal shoes. And yet, they are have a thick sole for cusion, and a comfortable liner. The essence or reason for taking the canvas material out of the the inside, outside and toe is to have a better feel for the bag with as large and flat a surface as possible. Yeah, I wouldn't want to contribute to any intellectual property issues on the mold thin. Also, I don't want you to have to hastle building a shoe, just wanted to show you this as it is a really unique example in the shoe market of "customization". In fact I don't know if I have ever seen anything like it. These people are devoted to this shoe as it really is the only one that has the characteristics they need which is extremely light, thin mesh lining and therefore very easy to feel teh bag on the inside, outside, and toe. Adidas probably doesn't even hardly know about teh following, but I would imagine a large number of their sales are from footbaggers. Here is a petition asking them to not stop producing http://www.petitiononline.com/adidasrl/petition.html ;). I wish I knew how big the footbag market was, I think it is exploding in europe. Have you seen any of the intense crazy move videos--could make a sick commercial if done in slow motion with some killer nikes that were all worn out. The shoes are very "deconstructable" as I have found out from taking my canvas out on two pair that I own. So from a reverse engineering standpoint ti would be easy to get fabric measurements and general sizing of the shoes.

The only thing nike has that comes close is a "linerless" version of our most popular skate shoe called the dunk. Here's the link:

They're hard to come by, but I could probably round up a few pair if you wanted to compare and try it out. Remind me what size you are and I'll get the ball rolling.

How much are they--I am a size 8. They look interesting, not sure how they woudl withstand teh cutting required on the bottom lace piece to open the toe. The swoosh part might be a bit thick and prevent a lot of feel or touch.

On the footbag side, It would be fun to run some experiments. We already make a footbag as a way to use more "regrind" from old shoes. ( regrind comes from Nikes post consumer waste project where we grind up old shoes and make basketball courts, tracks, frisbees footbags, etc.)

This is exactly what I would like to do, run some experiments but leverage your vastly larger knowledge on materials both for the cover (more durable) and the fill (was thinkingt a mix of plastics and metals might be best).

It would be fun to come up with 9 or 10 different filling formulas and try them out. I'm sure I could set it up with a few phone calls. Once we dial in a formula for the filling, we could then run durability tests with some newer materials.

To help me out, tell me what performance characteristics do you look for in a bag. soft, heavy, light, rebound.

Ha, this one will be tricky. A good footbag has a certain "dampened" quality that makes it nice and easy to stall and yet still lively enough to re set for another move. A lot of people like these "dirtbags" they are full of fine or course dirt. They stall very easy. There is another bag, which is probably the most popular and one of the most expensive that has both plastic and metal filling. I think as far as fabrics most like what is called "facicle" which has a great touch to it, but really doesn't last all that long and wears out more quickly if dirty. So you end up having to wash the bags a lot to try and keep them around longer. Here is a link to the abshire: https://www.freedomfootbags.com/shredsh ... ucts_id=29

ok, so i just read that whole discussion with your brother in-law and i would love to speak with him personally, even if just by email. also i would recommend having him get in contact with tom mosher who is currently designing a footbag specific shoe. I, like tom, believe that the rod laver is inadequate, and really so is every shoe on the market. he and i and quite a number of other shredders play in the adidas climacool shoe. most people that use climas opt for the "climacool original" aka "climacool 1" for its ideal surfaces when modded, as well as being lighter than the laver, more comfortable, and significantly more supportive. the laver is a 70's tennis shoe, with 70's shoe technology. we need to update. I could go on and on about this, but it seems futile to do it here, please Private Message me, i would love to lay some thoughts on a real life shoe designer.
