hey, for all you highschool attendees, whats secuirty like on your campus..i kno at my school they have goten alil out of control. we have over 50 security cameras in and out of school, along with the security cameras, our new server system logs EVERYTHING you do on a computer..(no more slime volleyball )..and it doesnt stop there, we have over 10 security gaurds that walk around the school during the day and also, our new ID cards that are needed to swipe INTO and OUT of the bathrooms...i tihnk they wanna make sure ur not taking over 10 minutes on the crapper?..(haha, its really to watch graffiti). the interesting thing is..nothing serious has ever happened at our school...it was very strangley out of the blue...and even graffiti wasnt a problem..haha...
thats a bit over the top, yes. but get used to it, at most colleges there are ID cards that are used for pretty much anything. bathroom graffitti is something they dont concern themselves with because there is plenty more to be worried about at a college, but security guards/measures are a fact of life.
The only times I've used ID cards on campus were check books out of the library or to get into one of the bars, although it's been a while on that one.
I pity the fool who lives in the land of the 'free'.
We have security cameras at our school, but no one ever watches them. We have security guards, but all they do is like pick up trash. There's a resource officer, but I never really see him.... I don't think I've ever used my ID for anything; I don't even know where it is.
Seriously, none of the security guards questioned 6 tenth graders (me and some friends) all out playing 4-square for 2 1/2 hours in the middle of the day when we're supposed to be in class.
I often leave for bathroom breaks and then just walk the halls for half an hour and then go back to class. It's a pretty sweet setup.

Sorry, I'm not in highschool but here's my view on the matter.
I think its admirable that schools would decide to upgrade their security systems before anything bad has already happened. Would you rather be the kid that had a gun put to his face or knife across his throat because there weren't enough metal detectors? Would you rather be beaten half to death in your own school by a half dozen teens from another school because of lack of security personal or cameras? Sure these hypothetical(?) examples are a bit extreme but I was just trying to get a point across. If I were a parent with children in such a school I would feel better knowing the institution is trying to keep my kid safe and they're watching to make sure that little idiot isn't doing something I may be re$pon$ible for. If the people and the hardware are doing what they are supposed to be dong, then I'm all for it. And, no, I dont think crazygeminirider's school is going overboard.
At the same time I do not believe there is a security sytem in existence that can keep you safe 24/7. Lets face it, hardware and people don't always do whats they're supposed to be doing... especially people.

Keeping us safe is fine, but they definitely do go overboard. How many schools really have serious problems like that? Yeah. The situation really only exists in big cities, mainly areas with big gang problems. I don't think there's ever been a single fight at my school, as long as I've been here anyway.
I think a lot of the excessive rules are just taking the fun out of highschool - breaking a bunch of petty rules, all the time, that aren't really harming anyone in the process. That's what makes being a teenager worth it, I think. *checks in with the substitute and then leaves*

I know of at least one public highscool near me that makes students wear a solid red shirt as a sort of uniform. Another public school prohibits you from wearing any clothing with any kind of writing, logo, or trademark on it. Someone explained it to me: it was to prevent students from wearing gang markings or colors or something to that effect. I really didn't see how that would help the gang problem in schools, if anything it made it harder to know who to avoid. Damn that viscious Tommy Hilfiger gang!

i thintk that is extremely over the top. i think that it will make kids react more, because they feel like they need to rebel against this force that is holding them down. Highschool is stupid. they say they are preparing you for college and everything, but once you get to college its a completley different transition. Your so used to being held back and everything in highschool, and in college they don't care. skip class as much as you want, be as late as you want. leave when you want etc. I think highschools should allow much more freedom for kids. My highschool was pretty bad about that stuff, but not nearly as bad as yours.
Sounds like a bit of overkill to me, but I grew up in the highlands of Montana where we don't get those crazy kids that shoot everyone. Just kidding. We do get some crazy kids, just nobody's shot anyone yet. I don't like the idea of the security systems such as that, but if they work, then why complain?

hmm, i agree with high school being completely different to college. In my town they did an experiment with the public VCE system, which is the last two years of high school before college. Instead of all the high schools have VCE they made one big VCE college in the middle of town, so it's about 2000 students. They treat us with more respect, most teachers are first name basis, open door policies for staff rooms etc, quite leniant on wagging etc, basically it's half way between school and college. I reckon it's a great idea, a lot of ppl wouldn't be able to handle going straight into college and having so much freedom... not setting people up for it is just asking for trouble.
I also live in a non-shooting land go aussie go. and i agree that testing boundries is an extremely important aspect of growing up... i think that that security is over the top but security definately is important.
