illegal to smoke on cars

sorry I didn't think I was putting forward any opinion - just saying would could be argued. You're right I misread the statistic regarding 1% of crashes being related to smoking.

Obviously smoking related crashes could be more or less serious than crashes in general. I wasn't trying to infer anything - just guessing at what the arguements would be used to pass such a law. I don't think I drew any conclusions at all. Maybe you should re read my post?

I think that is ricidulous. Just like Tsiangkun said, there are hudreds of other distractions that are more dangerous than smoking while driving. How is smoking even a distraction? for most smokers that have been smoking for sometime, its just like blinking or breathing for them. Are they not allowed to blink while they drive? because i mean a little kid could run out into the road during that .005 seconds. So maybe we should tape our eyes open when we drive?

While this is your opinion and I respect that, I must say that many people consider smoking cigars to be a hobby. It's about the tasting, the environment, the people, the advancement of products. Premium cigars are made with 100% tobacco, and do not contain the chemicals that are put into cigarettes. In addition, you're not smoking to "get high" or anything like that. It's merely for tasting, and an occasional hobby for people. Similar to wine tasting actually. (Actually VERY similar, it's quite fascinating!)

Although everyone is claiming that smoking in a car is not as likely to cause an accident than something else, it still causes accidents that could possibly be prevented. Smoking distractions (and possible accidents) that I can think of are:
ashes falling onto one's lap or somewhere else (suddenly jump and lose control)
dropping a cigarette (suddenly jump and lose control or trying to pick it up instead of driving)
simply not having both hands on the wheel like everyone is supposed to (not prepared to act quickly)
having to light a cigarette (looking down instead of at the road)
looking for a cigarette (pack) somewhere (not paying attention to the road)
this isn't a distraction, but throwing a cigarette out the window and causing a fire

I could maybe go on, but I don't want to sit here forever. My point is that there are distractions from smoking. I am only fighting you so far though. I still don't really see this issue being so important to ban people from smoking in cars. If the government wants to have less accidents, then smoking, eating, drinking, listening to stuff, singing, talking (on the cell), and anything else except driving should be banned, and that is just going too far. If that ever happens, accidents will still happen, because people will be freaking out over needing cigarettes or falling asleep due to not being able to eator listen to music that will keep them awake. But then that could kind of be argued, because one could still stop off the side of the road and eat or smoke or whatever. I am like a one-man debate. I am going to shut up now.

I think some of you are missing the point I brought up - which is that in Australia and I'm guessing most other countries there are already laws that could be used to give you a ticket if you smoke while driving - if you do anything in a car that could lead to distraction you can get a ticket for dangerous driving or something similar. This law isn't really a change in laws - it's just making it more clear to drivers that you shouldn't be smoking while driving.

Thank You!!! I am so sick of listening to endless debate in other U.S. states about banning cell phone use while driving. Every town I've lived in has some driving law against distracted driving. You get a ticket and some kind of fine.

People are free to drive and talk at the same time, SO LONG AS THEY CAN HANDLE IT LIKE AN MATURE ADULT!

These new laws are more examples of power seizure. The cops already have the tool to ticket drivers already. This encourages more police laziness. Why sit and observe crazy driving? It's easier to just spot people on cell phones.

p.s. Or maybe this will be used as justification for installing "cell jammers" along all roads.

About cell phoning and driving:

Most people can do it without ease, then there's the soccer moms who suck at life and crash because of it (not saying all, just some). In my opinion, the only people that really need to be talking and driving are doctors, lawyers, on-call crew workers like my older brother, businessmen, and...hm...me. Can't think of any other profession than those that really need to talk and drive at the same time. But, I haven't had problems with people talking and driving quite yet, so I really don't have a problem with that or smoking and driving, but I can see how NJ would be wanting to implement this as a means to lessen driving distractions.

You can order cell phone jammers. I 've seen a British company's web site that sells many different models. They say they wont ship to the U.S> unless you are special. You could have so much fun with one of those.\\-n
