The European Footbag Championships 1995

This is perhaps one of the first productions from a European Championships ever. My first footbag tournament and first time I competed. Today it clearly illustrates the rapid development the sport in Europe has gone through, during the last 10 years.

I captured it from a VHS tape (shit media) and my converter device is not working properly so that why it is in black/white. It actually makes it seem a bit older than it is but check it out for yourselves. Don’t mind the type error “em99” in the filename.

Some of those tricks really surprised me!
I liked the roll up one thigh, around the crotch then back down the other thigh, styyyyylish!

haha Mads, what was up with those.. slippers?? you were wearing!?

Yeah, thanks alot for posting this, Mads. Allan told me about that trick once many years ago, but he wasn't playing that day, just hanging around. I've always wanted to see how he did it, but I didn't figure that I'd ever get the opportunity. Now I'm happy!

Yeah…it is a great document of our history. Perhaps old school tricks will get back in fashion as we keep pushing the limits for our technical abilities.

Back then creativity was weighed differently in routines than today. As you can see we only competed in double freestyle and there was plenty of time to improvise.

During my preparations for the routine, I figured that a bit of creativity could add up for my lack of technical skill. Allan actually told me about a guy at Worlds that was good at creating creative routines with costumes and funny details, so I kept that in mind.

Me playing in my gorilla slippers the last minute of our routine was properly also the most unusual and creative part the whole tournament. They were really bouncy so I was kind of hard to control more than flyers and inside kicks. We actually won the Novice Double Freestyle Competition beating one other double team, so we were kind of happy!

What I found most ironic is that the European Championships 1995 looked like the level of shred from Worlds 1985 (held in the US). Now if you were to look at the difference between Europe and the US it would be totally opposite.

Thanks Mad -- that video really solidified the history I learned from demoing at the Freestyle Frisbee World Championships a couple months ago here in Seattle. It is quite evident now that what Red Husted was telling me about the sports being joined in the hip back in the day is very true. The two were played so similarly!

No shit! There were kickers in the lowlands as early as TEN years ago???

This video makes me wanna do a lot more kicks in my shred. It actually reminded me of the coolness of kicks.

It's crazy how these people, by their perfect mastery, managed to make kicks look cool (reminds me of TOTT1). Nowadays, quite some advanced shredders can't kick, just stall. Not saying that's a bad thing; it's just an evolution. (This has probably been said 100 times before)

Anyway, thanks so much for uploading etc. this!
