Dude, it sounds like footbag isn't the problem for you, but it's your parents. I've ordered around 7 footbags and a pair of lavers online. I also ordered all of the parts for my computer from about 5 different websites and I've never had any problems with my bank account. There's also a false rumor that you get spam e-mail a lot from ordering online and I get 0 spam e-mails. Online shopping is safe, I don't know if it is safer than a store, but it definitely isn't any less safe then ordering at a store.

If you want a safe place to order go to worldfootbag.com. I've ordered most of my footbags from them and my lavers. I just ordered my lavers 4 days ago and they arrived yesterday, right on time along with my footbags. They will not scam you and if you order a Mr. Sandbag (one of the best footbags) it's only $6. Not overpriced at all.

Why did your parents not want you to play footbag? It's probably one of the best sports to play, ever. You don't need to pay a coach or team. You can play whenever you want. You don't need that much space and you can get top of the line equipment for $60. In no other sport can you get all of your top of the line equipment for $60.

Consider this: Rod Laver was Australia's greatest ever tennis player. Our biggest tennis stadium in Australia is named after him - he is a house hold name. To buy his shoes you have to import them from a country which is fairly literally on the opposite side of the world...

Just a random comment about Rod Laver shoes...

It's cool that you're interested in it, but it might not be worth your money if it's not worth your time.

EDIT: And school/parents aren't much of a reason to not have time. I go to school...I commute for 2 hours to get there. My mom makes me do chores, I do my own laundry, and I cook. I study and do homework sometimes to. But I still play footbag for 2 hours a day everyday. I dunno. Maybe I'm a silly fanatic?

Then I don't at all see why you wouldn't do whatever you can, even if it means mailing someone money to get these shoes.

How can it be impossible to use that money order? :?
And if even that's out of question, you could always contact the World Footbag Association and ask for help.

...oh, and I play only for about an hour per day.

I use international money orders to order my stuff because i dont like using my credit card online and prefer the post office to the bank. I've never had a problem getting bags and shoes.
Furthermore the original assumption that you need lavers is simply not true (as many ppl have already pointed out). Spend some time going to various shoe shops and find a shoe you think will work for you - light, comfortable, flat toe and inside, unrestricted ankle flex - and then stick to it. Lavers arent the only shoe you can use - Puma for example have a range of different shoes ideal for footbag that are sold around the world in ordinary shoe shops, as do Converse, New Balence and to a lesser degree Nike. There have been inumerable great players who play in all different kind of shoes and sandals.

guess what... you can buy other shoes that are good for footbag, in Canada.
EDIT: I went to wal-mart bought some skateboarding shoes and modded them untill i got enough money to buy some lavers.

you can buy: clima cools (then mod them)
stan smiths and pretty much anyother shoe they posted here. And if you have your little heart set on some Rod Lavers, I'm sure you can find some who lives by you and has a extra pair that would sell to you.

Or... like most people said here...get a job, for jimmy crickets i have two.

I got some Rod Lavers at Footlocker for $40... All black, really nice.

It's weird, because going from sucky shoes to Lavers is weird... Different stall areas, all that humbug.

Ever since I got my Lavers, my game has improved though. A week ago I thought Illusions were impossible, now I am hitting like every 1 in 5 I try... FUNFUNFUN.

BUT, any shoe will work. I am sure in time I would have learned Illusions in my Reebok Classic's anyways...

To reply about the money issue.

When I was doing my first year of college and had no job, my parents gave me 40 bucks. Per month.

A footbag costs about 10 bucks (for a decent one). But anyways, that's a 1/4 of the money for a whole MONTH!

Regardless, this example is perhaps poor because I still have 30 left over. However, if someone is, perchance, too young to work, and their parents give them no money, then isn't money an issue??

That's true and it really comes down to priorities I think. I'm guessing you were living at your parents place at that time so didn't need to spend that money on anything essential for your survival. So personally I remember that I saved up and bought Lavers when I was a student not working (or barely working and also having to pay $1000 to play national touch football) because I really put that as my priority. Perhaps if I had have gotten them before I'd been playing for a year I would have been a much better player but unfortuantly we do live in a capitalist society and not many people will do what's good for you or society - but only what's good for themselves (ie. not giving out free Lavers).

However if you were playing another sport then you'd face the exact same problem with money. The fact is that it costs money to play any sport. For me Touch Football cost $100 club registration, $100 for shoes, $50 for uniform, $200 approx for getting to and competing in various state tournaments and about $1000 to participate and compete in national tournaments - all each year. I also had to give up my weekends to go to training and at one stage had touch football related things 5 days a week. To be able to afford this, I was forced to get a really really shitty part time job at a chinese resaurant as a kitchenhand getting paid about half the legal wage. This was because I was really into the sport at the time and to push things to see how far I could go in it, I had to do that.

The other sports I've played have all been very similar - actually most would have been more expensive (for example cricket costs about $1000 just to have the right equipment).

Compare this to footbag - where I started playing with a $6 crocheted bag and my running shoes that I already owned. Lets say at a conservative estimate that a good footbag lasts 3 months. So you buy 4 bags a year at about $40 (au) - that's $120 and shoes are about $100 au. So all footbag costs is $220 australian and you immediatly have the best equipment and few other costs. You don't have to play at regualar places and drive or catch transport to those places. You don't need to travel and join state teams to face bigger challenges. You can do everything in your own home if you like.

And that doesn't take into account the earning potential. To earn money playing sport in Australia you need to be a really amazing athelete and you need to play sport pretty much full time to get good enough to be paid. People who get paid playing Australian Rules Football (the highest paid sport in Australia I think) have been playing for at least 8 years before they get the opportunity (usually longer) and they've already had to spend thousands of dollars on going to underage representative tournaments etc. So when they make the grade to get paid to play, they've already spent a huge amount of money on the sport. They also usually need to leave home and move to a different state or city at this stage. Meanwhile in footbag, I've definitely easily made more money playing the sport than I've spent and I've only been playing 4 years. The next pair of Lavers I buy will be paid specifically with money I've earnt from footbag.

Footbag is a very cheep sport and an easy sport to make money in. Of course there will always people who can't even afford to play footbag. It's a shame and a reflection of the corrupt society that we live in. However that's certainly not "the REAL REASONs why FootBag NOt Popular !!!!!!!!!!!!"

The real reason is that the sport as we play it is only a bit over 10 years old and that's a really really short time for a sport to become a big thing. Australian Rules Football is over 100 years old, Touch Football is over 30 years old etc. No sport is big when it starts. Footbag is definitely a lot bigger now than when I started playing and it will probably be a lot bigger again in the next 4 years. In 30 years it will probably be recognised by the IOC as a real sport and in 50 or 60 years it will probably be an olympic sport. It's really impossible for any sport to be much bigger than what freestyle footbag is in such a short period of time.

Thanks for that insight Jeremy. I did not know the history behind the other sports you had mentioned, but put into context that makes sense. I think you're right about footbag becoming more popular in the next 4-5 years. It's building up slowly like skateboarding did in the 80s and early 90s. Skateboarding had to ditch the whole 'rebellious criminal' label that it had in the 80s, and I think footbag needs to ditch the whole 'stoner-hippie' label that's been plaguing it thus far. I mean it's fine to be a hippie, or have any lifestyle you choose, but it's definitely not something that should brand the sport in other people's eyes.

Edit: In the States it has this image. A lot of things have a bad image when they start to get noticed here. Probably because our entire society revolves around TV and movies :?

I've always figured that footbag isn't as popular as it could be because you can't make money or meet women doing it. Also, people usually can't wrap their mind arround the blur of leg movements inolved in freestyle. Yet they can understand a bunch of meat-headed jocks slamming into eachother, fighting over a ball? Sometimes I don't understand this society that we live in.

Regarding footbags "stoner hippy" image - I think this is only a problem in North America. Look at the size of the sport outside that part of the world and really I don't see it holding the sport back that much at all. Perhaps the US and Canada need serious national footbag organisations or associations like every country in Europe and in Australia - where all the serious footbag promotions seem to have been happing lately. You guys should take the time and make the effort to organise some kind of national organisation and promote the sport.
