Footbag nomenclature debates = boring
Footbag nomenclature debates = boring
Is anybody else completely bored with debating the absurdity of footbag names? I know I used to debate these a lot but they just seem like such a waste of time. I don't know, I guess the fact that I've been on the forum for a long time now and have already debated most of the things before. If I hit a move and say what I think it's called and people don't understand I will explain it and if somebody says something I don't understand I will ask for an explenation but all the stuff about if something is gyro weaving or spinning ducking or whatever is sooooooooooo boring. What the set is called doesn't change what it looks like or how cool it is. Don't other people see this as a waste of time argueing about it? I think this is probably why older experienced players seem to post so little on the forum - because they've done those kinds of discussions to death and nothing was achieved then, it's pretty unlikely that anything will be achieved now.
Well, if you consider yourself a wisened and hardened old footbag salt, we don't need you for the debates about nomenclature.
Leave it to people who find nomenclature amusing. Also, you may find it boring, but it definitely serves a purpose -- spinning diving blah blah I don't really care that much about, but in the same thread someone called gyro peeking from somewhat reasonable inferences. That sort of thing needs to be checked. What if someone started calling a fairy mirage a nuclear mirage because of the foot it was set off? You may not care, but I think there's a certain decay that relates to how nomenclature holds together, and while you may be bored by the debates, it's good at least someone will decide to post there instead of in the "do you have a problem with gay people" or "do you smoke the chronic?!?!" topics.
yeah you're right. I saw an interest in those topics once too so I'm certainly not saying they shouldn't happen. I was just wondering if anybody felt the same way I feel now about them.
edit: but I have had pretty much that same debate before and pretty much every debate lately that has come up I've debated before and I don't think anything was really achieved then so I doubt anything will be achieved now. I guess if no decision is made that doesn't mean it's pointless but I guess also my focus lately in footbag has been trying to actually achieve things since it often feels like very little significant is achieved in footbag - at least in the non playing side of things - ie. in promotion and in organisation.

i still read it..
but my problem is that i can´t even remember the names of the tricks i can do. so i wont dare to get into that discussion.
but i think that the nomeclature is pretty important to get a hold of the different things you can do. the few tricks that i know the names of are more or less the ones i remember to include in my routines.
but debating such things on the net is kinda tricky... especially when you see the very different usage of jobs-notation. probably thats something fitting more for real life. thats what i stick to, when it comes to "wahts that trick called"
j.
edit: yea, that really important stuff concerning promo and organization is definitely something that does not happen in the forums... everytime i start or join something i would like to be discussed seriously, it somehow dies after short time... or its the very same people all over again, whose concerns and opinoins i already know.

Re: Footbag nomenclature debates = boring
I agree that the repetitive talk is boring but at one point I too was more interested in it. I do not however understand how this sort of discussion keeps people away from the forum. I just don't read many of the posts on the forums that don't interest me. I don't just use the forum for dry discussion of footbag concepts and I doubt many people do either.Jeremy wrote: I think this is probably why older experienced players seem to post so little on the forum - because they've done those kinds of discussions to death and nothing was achieved then, it's pretty unlikely that anything will be achieved now.
This is a place that builds a sense of community and closeness among the players and that is why I enjoy posting here. There are a lot of things that have been rehashed over and over on this board that have been talked about before on the old mailing list but there is still a lot of new and exciting discussion that happens here that I enjoy and which makes posting on modified worth my while. I would hope the older players felt the same.

Kinda why I'm not around as much anymore, actually.Jeremy wrote:Is anybody else completely bored with debating the absurdity of footbag names?
