i think it's an awesome idea, it's not like it would replacing all the FREEstyle events... it would just be testing skill level in a different way. it may only be showing who has the broadest game, but that would be fine as long as it was viewed that way.... OR maybe each player can choose a certain number of concepts to replace? like say... no atomic sets and no illusions? then the organisers can replace them with other concepts?

also the improv idea is awesome too, i like that!

I think one thing to improve shred 30 is to make uniques on one side only. Bsos is a great training tool but it makes boring shred IMO.

I think you should present something old, and new. I believe CSS was one of the first tournaments (if not the first) to have just a shred competition without two minute routines. CSS showed it could work, and became a draw for top competitors. At the third Symposium (the one Brad and I ran) the Rippin' Run was introduced, and with a few minor details aside, was also very successful as well as spectator friendly (the crowds love head to head). Since then it has pretty much been 30 Second Shred, Rippin' Run, Big 3, and Sick Trick, a strong line up in my opinion. I am in support of trying out new events, that is essentially what the Symposium has been about throughout the years. If something new is to be introduced, as with previous new freestyle events at the Symposium, it should be phased in with the other established events. Phasing out an event is a little more complicated though, especially one that is as popular as the 30 second shred, which again was the original and still largest event at the Symposium. If it is to be replaced, I think what takes it's place should be at least as strong and established an event as the 30 second. And though the draw for the Symposium has not been just the strength of the event alone (it's just a great time to kick it and have fun), having a strong line up of competitive events is a huge draw. Top shredders such as Jim, Lon, and Ryan in the past along with many other players have been drawn to the event for the 30 second shred comp, I don't believe attendance would have or will be as high without one solid high profile competitive event presented. At this moment, there are only really two; routines and shred. Rippin Run is one of my favorites, but it is not as popular as the previously mentioned events. I am all for seeing new events tried out however, and the Symposium is a great venue to do so. So again, why not have it both ways, introduce something new, while keeping something established as the backbone. Offer something known as well as new, I believe the combination would attract a great many players.
