Net Training Sessions in Viikki

Post by zidane »

Hello,

I just thought I'd start a new blog on our weekly off-season training sessions in Viikki, Helsinki. My intention here is to write down how we have trained during the winter. Basically, whether we just played matches or actually went through some kind of drills etc. And also to keep track who was present and who was not and who dominated and who sucked. :)So, I suppose nothing too interesting for most users here at modified, but perhaps something useful for the ones participating our sessions. The funny stuff is at Mohkale's blog, not here!

The long and cold Finnish winter is always a problem for us net players. By 'winter' I mean all the time of the year that we cannot play outside, that is approximately half the year. It is somehow always very problematic to find a common time and space that fits all (or at least 4 for of them) so that it is possible to play decent matches.
So, we've been looking around in the Helsinki area to find us a at-least-once-a-week training session and now it seems we've found something.

Jaakko Inkinen arranged a sunday evening session at a small gym in Viikki. The gym is small but it is suitable for badminton which means it is also quite suitable for footbag net. It can host only one court though and because of that we are going to have a limited number of players "allowed" to participate. So, it is now a session for footbag net Team Finland players living in Helsinki area.

Alrighty, here we go with first flashbacks:

Sunday, September 18th

We went to check out the place for the first time (Jaakko, Jani Markkanen and me). As Jani had broken his finger playing soccer we had a rather chilled out session.

We did some power kicking (of course) and then went on with a drill where one player just serves and other two train reception-set-kill. We made it compulsory to try to spike. No dinks allowed. It showed well the toughness of reception as well as the importance of good setting. Most of the "rallies" ended up in a horrible spike attempt as the bag was set to a place where you wouldn't normally even consider executing a spike.

After a while we started playing "matches" while going on with this drill. We made it so that if the double team managed to do a decent spike they scored a point, otherwise the server scored a point. The server didn't even try to dig the spikes. Surprisingly, it was always the server who won the matches. :)

We did this for around 1,5 hours and decided to go home. The place was allright and we decided to make it a weekly session. Once a week is not much but it is far better than nothing.

And I remember when we were there first time my shoes were slippery and I thought that it's a shitty floor in there. Now, the second training session was fun, and the games were fast and my shoes weren't slippery at all.
All I did between those two sessions was powerKick with Jani . We trained indoors on a running track. The surface was a bit rough so I think it had scratched my soles clean.
Could there be a way to scratch shoes manually to make better friction?

September 25th

This time we had four players: Me, Jani, Jaakko and Janne Uusitalo. It was fun to be able to play doubles after a long break. I don't know about the others, but the last time I played doubles was in Worlds.

So, doubles it was. Nothing more than a little power-kicking and then doubles. Me and Jani against Janne and Jaakko. We had good matches as there was surprisingly few unforced errors and surprisingly many digs after big hits! Jani was digging really well, although he still had to be careful with his broken finger. Jaakko and Janne won all the (three) matches we played but we took games in between. :)

I went to the training site and fixed the net today ..and I did it without KARHU.

It took about an hour because my try to string the supporting rope in the net failed. Cladly the second try succeeded.
fun.

The other guys went on to book another weekly training session on Fridays. It is not suitable time for me and that makes it impossible for me to write any commentary on Friday sessions. Hopefully somebody else does that.

Anyway:

Sunday, October 2nd

Attendance: Me, Jani, Janne, Jaakko and Jukka Peltola.

Just doubles, nothing special. Playing was a bit worse than last week. Many unforced errors more and also surprisingly many fucked up serves! Anyway it was fun. I personally like the gym very much. The grip on the floor is excellent, at least when it comes to my shoes. That makes moving very fast which often means longer rallies, too.

Another thing. When warming up we found a takraw-size very bouncy ball. We created instantly a totally new game with it. As told earlier the gym is very small and the space around the court is from one to two meters only. The only rules in the game were: The ball has to come over the net and there are maximum three bounces allowed per side. Walls and roof could be used and also unlimited touches. It was kind of a mix of footbag net and squash. Believe it or not, it was fun! We thought of arranging the World Championships in this new game next Sunday. Please be there. All of you. :) Or maybe not, so that we have better chances of winning something big for the first time in our lives...

Shortly about last Fridays(Sept 29th) session.

Players: Jaakko, Janne and Jani.

Games were fun, but two of the tree players got tired and the quality of the game was pretty lame at times.

Hey Ben, here are few new lines you should learn in finnish:

Nimeni on Ben ja minä rakastan pukeutua tyttöystäväni alusvaatteisiini, ne saavat minut tuntemaan itseni niin kauniiksi ja naiselliseksi.
Olen myös tatuoinut pyllyyni Calgary Flamesin logon, koska minulle Flames sekä karvainen perse ovat kaksi ihaninta asiaa maailmassa.

Don't bother to find out what that means, it's not that important. Just focus how to pronounce it...

...and something about the subject
Can I join you guys sometimes, can I?

Of course!
Sessions take place on Fridays from 17.00 to 19.00 and on sundays from 20.00 to 22.00 @ viikki.
There are a few exceptions though so you should contact one of the players to confirm the session.
Let's kick it.

Tapio from Turku is coming to play with us today. I'm very excited to see how he's playing. And a five-day-long break from playing is nowadays too much..just can't wait.
