memoirs of a tragedy
Thanks, I wish I could say I composed it , or played it live, but it's just me producing and arranging bits and pieces of my stuff with stuff I found to make something new.
It's mostly done in Reason, so I guess it's all MIDI in a sense. I played two of the sements and I found some other midi pieces I used to fill in the background. I made extensive use of the NN-19 and NN-XT controlls, especially the velocity, freq, res, and envelope functions to add some life and feeling to piano. I just looped it over and over in two measure segments and recorded the midi commands onto new tracks until I liked what I heard. I did additional processing, in the editor thingy within reason to fix stuff that was grinding in my ears. Once I got the sounds I wanted, I exported the pieces as wav files, and loaded them into Audacity. I used audacity to chop up the pieces into samples of things I felt had the emotion I wanted for the piece. I then brought the pieces back into reason and loaded them into Redrum devices, with each Redum channel wired to it's own channel on one of the mixers, and each sample present multiple times in the Redrum devices. This let me use different effects on the same sample when playing the pieces.
I made extensive use of the PEQ-2 device to really bring some of the notes out of the back ground, to make some parts really pound out loud, and to add a gradient of intensity across a range of notes.
The song itself is played using the keyboard to controll the Redrum machines and play the samples I produced.
