Sick 15, 10? 11? 12???

Post by Shredster »

Okay, so I had just been thinking and reviewing sick 15 entries with Nic Bathgate.

First off, he brought up the idea of making the entries open (no signing up necessary), also making an EXACT due date for entries.

But, while I saw some of these entries, I was confused. Why were some of the best players ending their combos on bails? Could it be the fact that 15 is too high of a number to bust combos that are REALLY IMPRESSIVE?

My idea is that the sick 15 number could be more impressive with less of a number. Say, sick 10? 11? 12? I'm not sure, post if you think any of those numbers are better than sick 15. If you still believe that sick15 is fine as 15, then say so. But, I think people would try and hit much larger, more impressive strings if there were less moves required.

Personally, I would like to see more crazy combo runs up to 10 than some toned down runs of sick 15 (not knocking anyones combo here btw, you all did great). I'm just trying to think of possible improvements. Thanks

part of the reason everyone submitted baily sick15's is that I organised it poorly and as a result people rushed their submissions and I endedup with strings that were part of another string or sick15s that were filmed a long time ago and not for the purpose of a sick15 comp.

I would be happy to host a sick10 if everyone prefers that to sick15.

Pros:
 Sick 10 would be more intense and would push people to school harder moves to put in there sting and not settle for bails = good for their game.
 The videos will be 5 seconds shorter each and overall that means a much shorter video and a smaller download.
 It would hopfully take people less frustration to get something on tape and would open the event to beginner players who cant hit runs over 10 contacts.

Cons:
 Sick10 does not encourage string length as much as sick15, changing to sick10 kind of takes away from the aim of the competition, which is to encourage long strings that have cool links and hard moves.

What does everyone else think?

im down for either. im back in action. Sick 10 would have much cooler combos, and would still encourage run length. Sure 15 is 5 more, but we would probably get the same number of adds in a sick 10 as a 15. Just better add ratio

As I recall when Nic, Jorden Moir and I had the discussion about this that led to the sick 15 idea - the whole point of it was to encourage good long strings instead of hard combos. If people can't hit 15 moves in a row in footbag they really need to spend a long time schooling stuff and working on consistancy instead of big tricks. 15 moves isn't a huge amount and I really hate the attitude amoungst footbaggers that if they can't win they won't compete (ie. all the fucking sandbaggers competing in intermediate comps at worlds). The whole point of sick 15 is to encourage consistancy and long runs. I don't enter in sick 1s or 3s online because I think it's easy to hit 1 or 3 hard moves in a row and I won't enter in sick 10 if people think that's cooler than sick 15. I'm earning hundreds of dollars every weekend with my footbag skills because I can hit 30 tiltless 99.99% of the time the time I try - my fearless, tripless and guiltless records - while probably impressive - count for nothing. Consistancy is the most important thing in footbag - more important than "both sides" that everybody talks about.

This is true. There is nothing more impressive and professional than long strings.

Did I offend you Jeremy?

I hope I don't come across as that type of person. I was just trying to think of improvements, possible improvements, and I knew nothing would get done unless both sides of this were discussed.

Unfortunatly, I never heard the discussion between you, nic, and jorden, or else this topic would not have been brought up. I understand that consistency is important in footbag. The reason this was brought up is that not that the due date was late, it was because I feel that the competition wasn't as exciting as it was hoped to be. For that matter, I thought of perhaps changing the sick number to include some more impressive things would in effect make people comment and vote more.

No offense to anyone about this. If anyone else would like to comment and discuss about this, rather than just vote, and give a reason for why they voted, so we can maybe figure out what is the best thing to do with this competition, comment now! Or else, we'll just keep it as sick 15 since Jeremy Owheel is basically the only one who opposed the idea to sick10. Give your opinions, I've given mine.

Chris, I don't think Jeremy's comments were directed at you.

I am not sold on sick15 or sick10, both have good and bad points, I would love some more opinions before we decide.

I will admit the entrys and the response to the season 1 sick15 comp were disapointing, but so was the organisation.

Let's do it right this time.

I agree with Jeremy on the Sick 15 because of the 'long runs and consistancy shtick'; and, I dig the Sick 1/3 competitions because those are the hardcore busts of Nemesis or stringing together 5 add's

Yes really - read my blog, Ken's blog or the topic about "nestle does Australia" or the other topics on this subject.

Nestle Australia has launched a $100,000 footbag promotion just recently - I thought it was pretty big news for footbag but I guess I'm wrong...

Yeah, but I there still isn't a Sick (10-15?) monthly comp so I figure this is still an issue which should be resolved.

Yeah fair call. I think I'd definitely enter if there was one - especially since my entry in this comp was not at all an effort to win since we were supposed to have finals on the last comp.

I think 15 contacts is the best but I guess 13 is ok - it gives me a better chance of winning probably :P

Just to confirm, we tried sick15 and it didn't work, too much effort for people to enter an online competition, could work at a real life event but for now we will stick to online sick1 and sick3.
