That's funny because if they are drug users I wouldn't see them as rational in the first place.

Yeah, but that's your prejudiced opinion and is, in no way, backed up by scientific fact or real life.

It's neat how two people violently opposed to sin have grown up in Sin City. Gotta rebel against something, I guess.

I think it's a bit wrong to call pot a "drug." It's a nasty word. Asprin is a drug. Cocaine is a drug. Heroin is a drug. Pot is just pot. Ah, what the hell, you're still going to stereotype and generalize, so why bother?

First of all, you're saying it is not a scientific fact that illegal drugs impare your judgement in some way? I'm sure that's not true. Secondly, I've backed up my opinions with real life examples, you might want to read my posts again. Lastly, who said I was trying to making an "compelling argument?" If you read my post again I said, "...I wouldn't see them as rational..." Meaning it was my opinion, meaning I wasn't trying to make a "compelling argument". But don't worry, I will in this post.

It's neat how two people violently opposed to sin have grown up in Sin City. Gotta rebel against something, I guess.

If you want to talk about people, you might want to know a little bit about them. Neither of us grew up in Vegas. Maybe you should've asked us before posting. Also you know what else is neat? You yourself just admitted that doing drugs is wrong. Oops!

You're right I've never tried drugs, but Steve has (the other person you illuded to in your post). So, once again, you might want to get to know the people first before posting about them.

Holy I make assumptions, Batman!

Now, in defense of myself, because you are all right, I've never tried drugs. So how can I say it's wrong to do pot, if I've never tried it, right? Who am I to say doing drugs isn't a rational thing to do? Man, I must have been told by my mommy and just blindly believed her. Boy am I an ignorant, bigotted, stereotyping, generalizer.

I never should've believed my mom when she said not to run out in the street. She was just generalizing all streets. I don't think I should believe that hazardous sign on that barrel of acid. I think I will stick my hand in there and see if that sign was just stereotyping acid. You can't believe everything you read, right? I feel great after just drinking that whole gallon of rat poison! Geeze, that warning label was a crock!

Like I said in a previous post, I have been told confirming evidence by a person, who was at that time a adamate drug user (many of you have probably even smoked with him before), that pot does in fact impare your judgement. And you know what's funny? He now has given up on drugs for good. So, since nobody here seems to be denying my claim, I can confidently say that I don't think it is rational to put yourself (myself) in a situation where your (my) choice making abilities are compromised.

If you would like to willingly put yourself in a situation where your morals can be compromised, be my guest, but don't say I have no basis for my opinions.

Weed, it was a gateway drug. It changed my judgement. Once, when I was high, I ordered two pizzas because I was so hungry I thought I could eat them both. I was wrong, and I blame the weed. I knew I only needed one pizza.

Drugs are bad kids, they make you do stupid stuff and they waste your money. But then again, so do women.

*** preemptive apology (I'm drunk) (god bless google toolbar spellcheck) ***

Sorry, but you still have, at best, a rationalization for your opinions - not a justification. You remain a bigot for your opinions of drug users. by rationalization i mean that there is a constructible reality in which your belief is correct. (total) justification requires that every constructible reality conforms to your belief.

you can be freed from the title of bigot when you choose to rationalise for your enemies (of opinion) instead of forcing justification for their actions.

fwiw, my statement wasn't meant to carry any weight, as in it was a peculiar observation based on the best of my limited knowledge (that you're both from vegas (I now know this isn't true), that your both violently antidrug). sorry if it offended, but I didn't expect it to provoke any response as it has nothing to do with the argument.

As for you (or the other Vegas guy, I get you confused) not knowing any rational drug users... Hi, I'm Colin. I'm an avid drug user (even right now!) and a mathematician/logician. I challenge you to simultaneously learn some philosophy and get to know me, and then label me irrational.

Edit: there should be a breathalyzer for the internet... i'd have totally ignored this sober.

I think I can only convey my appreciation of Ben's post if I speak like a southern colonel.

"Top draw, m'boy. That'll show 'em, I say, that'll show 'em the what four."

But, Ben is right, any experience you think I lack in the subject is wrong. I used to be hard into that stuff, and not just pot. And I am against all of it!

But I did like the South Park quote for the drug comment. :)

I haven't been following this at all but I just skimmed over it and is Ben saying that everybody who use drugs are irrational? Or is he saying that his entire philosophy on drugs is based on what one or two people have told him?

Gee I feel like an idiot for wasting all that time reading books by professors and scientists on both sides of the drug arguement. All I should have done was found some ex junkie and based my opinions on that...

Ya, because professors and scientists are always right  . I think experience is more valuable then test tube experiments.

But all that is besides the point. Nobody is refuting my point that drugs effect your judgement. So my reason for not wanting to do drugs and not thinking others should is still valid.

Everyone is attacking my opinion saying it has no scientific backing or validity, but I haven't read any scientific facts from anyone who disagrees with me. So, stop telling me to do something you aren't doing yourself.

No one has even given a good reason for doing drugs in the first place. Or how illegal drugs help you in any way. So far, I'm the only one backing up my opinions. So, before taking the easy road out and mocking my reasons, come up with your own.

Sorry but I had to move this topic into the kicking circle. It is simply not at all footbag related and should have been moved 2 months ago when it was created.

Furthermore, I plan on deleting most if not all of the future threads started on this same topic unless there is some sort of significant difference to the thread. We now have at least a half dozen all about the same thing and you can continue posting in any one of those. It's pretty safe to say that a larger majority of you are stoners if you can't seem to remember that  .

No. I'm not refuting the point that 'judgement is impared under the influence of drugs'.
However, speaking generally, being a drug user does not mean that your judgement is impared.

And, what I am disagreeing with is that pot is a gateway drug. That is the biggest pile of generalised crap in this thread. I smoke pot but have NEVER tried any other narcotic or 'illegal' substance.
Why not argue that alcahol is a gateway drug? I started drinking well before I tried weed. Do you drink? What are your thoughts on Alcahol? How is that better than pot?

Oh, and THANK YOU Splint for finally moving this thread to another section as it does not belong in the General section (although it should be in the Discussions section, like all the other threads about drugs, and not the Kicking Circle).

I know it's your statement, but I want to amend it by adding "unless you are actively under the influence of drugs."

I also think that it's important to differentiate between a drug user and a drug abuser. If a person wakes up in the morning and can't stand a waking minute without some form of intoxication then they are a drug abuser and their judgement is impaired. If a person wakes up in the morning and goes through their day and does their work or what-have-you and they decide to come home when all is through or go and have a few drinks then I would say they are a drug user and their judgement becomes impaired at the point of intoxication.

Okay, let's go the straight-up contemporary medicinal route, which it's highly unlikely that anyone on this forum actually has reason to use drugs for. Marijuana is used for medicinal purposes of pain relief an hunger aid in Glaucoma, Cancer, and AIDS patients. When going through the various types of treatments patients often experience a notable loss of hunger and experience weight loss and consequently strength loss. Patients who take THC pills or who are allowed by their state's law to purchase Marijuana legally benefit from the pain relieving feelings as well as from the side effect of feeling hungry and NEEDING to eat. Those patients are able to retain their weight instead of lose it.

From a historical perspective drugs such as tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and peyote have all been used in religious rituals to help in attaining a communion (i.e. Catholicism) with God, gods, or whatever divinity. They have also been used and are still used as a ritual welcoming in political and business settings as a form of hospitality toward visitors.

In modern American culture (and others) use of drugs has become more of a recreation. It is a release from the average everyday humdrum brought on by the ever increasing pressures of society to be and do better. When used responsibly and with extreme caution many people are capable of maintaining the balance necessary to remain in control of their judgement. However, in many instances our societal attitudes toward drugs doesn't allow for drug education for people who use or plan to use. Instead, the attitude of Zero Tolerance toward people using drugs is one that creates a hostility toward the use of drugs. One example is the commercial ad differences between Alcohol and Marijuana.

Ads for Alcohol talk about using it responsibly and being sure to have a designated driver or call a cab.

The latest ad against Marijuana has an old lady sitting all alone at a table full of food and the voice-over says, "Just tell your grandmother that you couldn't make it to dinner because you were out getting stoned."
REALLY NOW!!! Anyone who has ever experienced intoxication through Marijuana knows damn well that you don't give up a free meal when you're high.

The point is that because certain drugs are despised over others there is an imbalance in the way people are educated in their usage.
