IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE FOOTBAG ISN'T POPULAR!!!! Footbag as we all know is the shit and I think that its a very disciplined arena in which to compete. We can all admire other footbaggers because we appreciate the dedication and hardwork it obviously took to be able to perform at their respective levels. People try to be pessimisstic and ask, "well if practive makes perfect and nobody is perfect then why practice?" Footbag validated for most everyone in this forum that practice makes perfect and we still respect that nobody is perfect. We all drop the bag and we all pick it up.

Hi, I'm sorry but I don't understand your post heading. The heading says you know the real reason: Whether or not footbag is popular, but then you make no reference to what reason you're speaking about. It's great that you love playing the sport despite it's relative obscurity in mainstream North America, but your post heading was completely misleading. You actually have a really decent post, but try and match the heading with your subject matter.

What, are you going to dissect everyone's posts and critique them since you're so smart? Sorry, just seems to me like you're trying to be a know-it-all. Yeah, the post title was misleading, but so are a lot of posts on modified. Some of them are just people rambling, and others are posts that actually contain some significance.

Just had to yell at you for seeming like a turdburglar. I'll shut up now.

Yeah, I actually was torn about submitting the post in all honesty. The only reason I felt it was necessary is because I was actually looking forward to hearing his comment on why he felt footbag was popular or not. It's an issue that I'm currently very interested in, and it was just kind of a let down when that issue wasn't clearly cited, when it was apparent that it would be in the subject heading.

I realize that post headings aren't always accurate, and that a lot of times they just spiral off onto other tangents, so you're probably right in saying that I should be less critical.

BTW Sidi, do you think footbag is or is not popular, and why? I still would like to know. From your post it sounds like you think it's unpopular because of its difficulty, as well as other people's perception of its difficulty.

The post purposely did not match the heading....!!

I think footbag is what it is, to each person on modified.ca. When I saw the subject heading which said: I know the real reason why footbag isn't popular, I thought to myself, what difference should it make? And if people are to comment it, it is obviously going to be an extremely biased approach. Do i think footbag is popular? Well it isn't in North America and it is in Europe. This is fact.

If a bystander were to see someone playing footbag in europe would they know that "this is freestyle footbag" or "this is footbag net"?

In chicago nobody knows what the hell it is, many people don't even know what "hackey sack" is.

Since it's a fact it's popular in Europe; why is it so popular compared to North America? I think maybe it's because it's not portrayed in any mass media and a lot of people (at least in Chicago) find it easier to look down and belittle pretty much anything they don't know much about. Even little kids try to disrespect it - probably because their parents are raising judgemental little douchebags by being judgemental douchebags

Yeah, but remember, Europeans like rugby, too. It's a semi-popular sport here amongst the few that enjoy it. Different sports/activities kick off differently upon how the masses react to it in different countries/continents. Maybe if we went back in time and played mad hack back then people here would like it more?

A little anecdote if I may: I used to have a girlfriend from Finland who came to Canada to visit in 2004. We went to Montreal and went to check out Tams. Turns out the Worlds were being held there and I didn't even know what footbag was! Me and my friends marvelled at having a fresh eye to this sport. She said "everyone in Europe knows this is footbag, c'mon man! you don't know footbag?" So from my own personal experience, people do know about it there.

Actually footbag isn't a very popular sport in Europe although it's growing. In the Finnish Footbag Association there are over 3000 members but the real number of freestyle/net players is probably about 1000. The registeration is free (and registered members can order bags from there cheaper) so that's probably the reason why it seems that there'd be much more kickers.

It's a growing but still a small sport.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but Finland also has a population of 5 million in 180 square miles. That's basically half the size of New York City, both in population and area. If 1,000 people were really into footbag in just half of NYC, I would consider it to be a popular sport there.

By comparison, I live in DC, and although we have the DC All Stars, there's probably a total of 50 people tops that are really into footbag here, with the DC and surrounding metro population of about 3 million.

So using this comparison, I would say footbag is an EXTREMELY popular sport in Finland compared to where I live, which is the capital of the United States.

EDIT: Ugh, sorry I was using a crappy conversion program. It's 210,000 square miles. That definitely makes more sense. That's roughly 4/5 the size of California (I double checked this time lol). Still, given the fact that Finland still only has 5 million people which is about half NYC's population, even though the density's not there, per capita it would seem much more popular than a typical US city or state.

??? Not to sound rude but I don't know where you are getting your information from. Finland (Suomi) is actually 337,030 square kilometres. I may not know the translation into miles but I know it is nowhere near 180 square miles. Looking at a map of Europe you will see that Finland is huge and to get from Helsinki in the south to Lapland (where Santa Claus lives) in the North actually can take I believe 15 hours by car.

Some states obviously have more of a scene in the US than others, like say California and New York. But on the whole, footbag in the US isn't nearly as popular as most European countries, just based on what I've read and heard from most people. I think the US is just slower to catch on to things a lot of times. Like music, fashion, technology. A lot of times stuff just has to go through the TV filter to gain any type of recognition here, which is sad. I'm hoping I can successfully do my part to make footbag a more popular and recognized sport in the US.
