So please vote in the poll and comment if you like. Especially if this question for any reason sounds ridiculous to you.

Um, if you think washing your hands in the kitchen sink is unhygenic, then I better see you eating your burger and fries with a fork and knife.

As long as you use regular soap for your hands I think its fine. Hehe, better not eat your burger at all.

Now I'm sure some people out there use the same washcloth for both their cornholes and the rest of their bodies... lets have those people speak up on the question of hygiene

Don't forget to use soap when you wash your hands

Great topic. My girlfriend's mom freaks out over this -- I don't see what's wrong with it at all. I mean your hands are in the sink when you're washing dishes with the water stopped-up. Isn't that worse -- your "hand germs" marinating the eating utensils -- than running water from the faucet straight down the drain?

i wash my hands a lot. I usuallly use a bathroom sink but mostly just whatever sink is closest to me. I feel weird having the water come off my hands and hit dishes and crap in the kitchen sink.

Yeah see I think it's perfectly ok - it's not like you're washing your hands in the kitchen sink after going to the toilet - just after eating. I mean usually we're talking about having juice or other food product on your hands that are on the plates and everything too. You put things that have been in your mouth in the sink (ie. knives and forks) so that seems less hygenic than putting your hands in the sink.

I think not only is it ok, but it's also a sign of insanity to not think it's ok - especially when you start screaming at people about it.

This is something we totally agree on!!!
I've also witnessed this screaming experience, in the third person.

If you think not-very-hard about it, anything that you put in the sink was very likely put there by your hands in the first place, plus my previous point of washing the dishes with your hands anyway, and putting-away of the dishes with your hands.

It sounds like anybody who freaks out about this should watch "As Good As It Gets" (great movie about a really interesting guy who packs his bathroom cupboard with bars of soap (which he only uses once each) and prances around on the sidewalks to avoid gum and dirt on the ground. He also open doors with his sleeve over his hand, and must turn on and off lights and lock and unlock doors, like, 10 times each before he leaves a room... -- with Jack Nicholson.)

I have never heard of this concept of it being bad to wash your hands in the kitchen sink. The germs on my hands are no better or worse than the ones on a dirty plate. However, I think I may have clicked Yes because of the weird phrasing of Jeremy's question. Like Yes, it's fine to wash your hands in the sink. But the real answer was No, it's not unhygenic or it's alright, whatever. I think he did that on purpose and I'm the only one that took the bait...Next time Prime..Next time!!! :x

The only time it's unhygenic is if you dont properly clean the sink of soap and then use it for food preparation. In a real kitchen you would never wash your hands at the "kitchen" sinks. There's designated sinks for that. what if you pooled soapy water at the bottom of the sink and then pulled out a whack of meats to thaw in the same sink? then you'd have soapy pieces of meat, nobody likes those :P

On another side note, leaving dirty dishes in a sink is waaaay more unhygenic than washing your hands in the same sink.

but i voted unhygenic because when you're cooking for real you gotta use the proper stations, cross contamination is evil.

edit:
also you may not know but when you have nasty hands, lets say you were seasoning raw chicken breasts and you get your hands all slimy, well there's a good chance you have salmonella on your hands, when you turn on the tap at your kitchen sink you are infecting that tap with salmonella, you can wash your hands at the kitchen sink, clean them, then use the same sink to rinse produce and by turning on the tap again you could spread the salmonella onto the produce you're washing if you handle it with the same hand that turned on the tap.

Thats one reason why it's good to keep your hand sanitizing to a separate area away from where food is prepared.

This reminds me of some guy that often comes into the resturant I work at to eat. His hands and arms are convered in plastic and stuff.

If you lived in a one room apt. with a common area bathroom (shared with the other tenants in your building) and down the hall from you, then were else would you wash your hands if the line to the bathroom was around the corner and the chocolate sauce on your fingertips is dripping onto your new dress slacks???

People who worry about bacteria and such are too much.

It's marketing hype to get people to buy more soap, and more cleansers, and more sterilizers.

It's a kitchen, not an operating room.

Everything in your home is covered with bacterial, your food, your counters, the couch, the floors, the refridgerator handle. . .

so pointless to worry about such things.

I saw a thing on the news that like 90% of american dont wash there hands correctly and they did this demo and shit it was cool

also

anti bacterial soap is pretty much a joke , they did studys on it and the bacteria was still on the hands of the user after using it and another user used regular soap and had the same amount of baceria.
