Can it really be that I have been in Australia for almost 2 weeks?!? 8O Man, this trip is going by so quickly, everyday feels crammed. The sun sets later than in Japan, but it doesn't seem to help. I need more hours in the day, 24 doesn't cut it anymore.

I played footbag 12 days in a row! I forced myself to take the day off... my first day in Australia without playing footbag...damn.

Dyalan Govender should receive a stipend from the Australian tourism board. Everyday I've done something fun, be it playing trivia at University (twice), checking out world-famous Bondi Beach (yesterday), or hitting the aquarium (tomorrow.) To say nothing of the daily scrabble games, which have also been epic. We play with a ten-point bonus if you play a footbag-word; today Dyalan played "zulu," while yesterday I played "grifter" and finished off a game (played my last tile) by making "id" on a triple word score square. 8)

The soundtrack of the trip has been rocking too. Dyalan's car has been like a Beck career-retrospective, my little time alone has been Biggie vs. Sinatra, Guido's car has been classic rock songs I haven't heard in at least 5 years.

And the kicky-sack (legball)... man, the sessions are all starting to blur in my head. Or as Dyalan's car might say: "Time is a piece of wax, fallen on a termite, who's choking on the splinters"

I'm gonna dance randomly over the sessions, the endless sessions. Yesterday, October 25th, 2005, Dyalan and I played at Bondi Beach. We played on the boardwalk for a bit, but I was just messing around. I played in my swim trunks ("togs" in the local dialect) and a basketball jersey, so nothing serious on my end. Dyalan played well though, at one point busting out a long run with lots of shuffle that included a deep backside blur midrun. A random waiter joined us a bit and we had friendly conversation. He was so moved by freestyle, that when his break ended and he headed back to his cafe, he told us he'd "sort us out" if we got hungry. Sure enough, we went to his cafe, and were pleasantly surprised to find that a big fruit salad and a nice chunk of baklava mysteriously only ran us $5 Aus! :) What a champion!

After braving the freezing waters for a bit, we hit the skatepark, and when we got bored of watching untalented skaters fall down, we busted out another shred. Again, I didn't bother changing into shorts, so nothing notable other than barfly-dyno bsos, which isn't huge, but may have been new. Dyalan on the other hand hit his first pdx eggbeater, and sealed with a butterfly. Nice work.

That night Guido had a training session after work, which I watched and gave him tips/challenges/suggestions on various tricks and combos. The most important tip that Guido has internalized, has been my advice to play on his toes. His form is just way better now because he's conscious of it. He hit my challenges in almost no time; ducking butterfly to dlo, and drifter to dlo. I also demoed torques for him, and with just a few words, I saw immediate improvement. Flipside torque for his first time! Saw him hit it 3 times actually. Score!

Moving back chronologically, I also had a shred on Monday, October 24th, 2005 with Jeremy and Dyalan at University. Jeremy was in town that weekend for demos Saturday and Sunday, and after all the weekend work, we had pretty little left in the tank for Monday. Saturday demo was easy, but we had a shred after that (with Daniel Boyle, but more on that later), and Sunday was a backbreaker, seeing us shred nearly non-stop under the brutal sun for the big Foxtel 10th Birthday demo. Monday I woke up with my feet hurting, to the point where I didn't even want to walk. Still, I figured I shouldn't waste the chance to play with Jeremy, since I normally don't have the chance to play with such a skilled player.

It was hot out at University, and flies filled the air plague-style. Luckily, Jeremy smelled like shit, so all the flies concentrated on bothering him, and the rest of us were relatively left alone. 8) Jeremy used all his energy killing flies, I think he terminated 8 of them, so he didn't have much energy left for freestyle. That session was definitely the lowest-energy i've seen Jeremy play at, but given the grueling weekend, I totally understood. Still, he had one run with lots of pixie toe shuffle leading into tap-atom repeat to tapping legover, something something.

Despite feeling a bit tired myself, I somehow found energy reserves and had a great session. :D I hit diving pdx dlo, but no seal. Had a run with tombstone bsos, and in the same run hit smoke and blurry drifter using different drifters. My best run was over 20 contacts, almost entirely genuine, and it started with sailing butterfly to blurry torque, which was a new combo for me. Very very happy with that one. :) I also hit diving pdx torque for my first time in about 6 months, and sealed it with a few contacts. Very pleasantly surprised to play that well, given how tired I was. 8)

We warmed down with a couple games of foursquare, which were a blast. Dyalan's friend Patrick rounded out the game, which included some great rules, including: "you must spin a full rotation, AND touch the floor, AND make a unique animal noise after every pass." It was great. Jeremy took both games... maybe his plan was to save his energy for 4square...

Guido's back, so I'm gonna go be social. Hopefully I can blog the weekend demo stuff tomorrow. In good news, it sounds like I'll get to check out Tasmania and Queensland next week, but in bad news, it looks like I won't get to go to Melbourne at all. :( Just gives me a reason to come back sometime.

Exhausted but rocking out hard,
CF 8)

October 27th, 2005

Taking the day off yesterday was good, since my hamstring has been bugging me a bit. Checked out the aquarium with Dyalan today, which rocked. I saw a Manta Ray whose body was bigger than a car-hood. Platypuses are weird and cool.

Guido got off work early, but before he did, Dy and I hit his work and did a small footbag demo for his co-workers. That must have been totally random for them. Went well though. After that, the 3 of us hit a nice shred spot which overlooks the harbor, and we had an excellent session. I was all fired up to play, partly because I had taken the day off yesterday, and also because I knew this was one of those very rare opportunities where I was playing in front of a camera, where the footage has a good shot at getting on the internet.

Doing a 3 man session really worked out well, cause it gave us all time to rest up between runs in front of the camera. It also kept the vibe good, cause usually at least one of us would be playing well.

Normally, I'd spend this part of the blog writing about all the cool stuff that was hit, but since it'll hopefully get online, I'll have to write about other stuff.

-There were lots of flies about, which was annoying. I killed 3 or 4. I suggested we name the session: "Horde of the flies"
-We played near "netball" courts. Yeah, i don't know what it is either.
-The platypus is venomous. Seriously.
-This weekend is packed with demos... and then before you know it, I'm off to Tasmania. I fly down on Halloween... I probably shouldn't dress up as a terrorist.
-Most wildlife in Australia can, and will kill you.
-I should have played easier today, cause my hamstring feels annoyed at me now. Still, it may be my only chance to get on film shredding in Australia, so I had to jump at it. Hope to show you soon! :)

Yeah the neighbour of a friend of mine who lives about 3 houses away from me was killed a few weeks ago by a drop bear. There's so many warnings about them and people still walk under trees with out a helmet or umbrella...

See you tomorrow :)

What's actually a drop bear? Do their droppings kill or do they jump/accidentally fall from the tree and bite/crack the neck? They must be quite heavy or what?

I just finished logging today's session with Guido. I can't believe how well we all played! :D Lots of good Guido, and lots of big tricks from Dyalan (his strings were off today, but some bigass tricks). I was also real happy with a lot of my runs. One over 30, a few in the 20s, but most importantly, lots of genuine links and lots of stuff on my flipside which hasn't been on video. It's tripod footage, which means it could be more zoomed in, and the contrast isn't great, but you can see whats going on, and I think y'all will like it when it goes up. Can't wait! :)

I bet sniikeri was asking because there are actually otters in Lapland (the north of Finland) who hang out in the trees and occasionally fall from there. Even though Lapland is sparsly populated, the dropping otters still kill over 3 Finns a year. I just saw a TV documentary about it like 2 weeks ago. Sounds unbelievable, but it's true.

Sorry Ken, this was as off-topic as it can be.

Yeah, Asmus - Matti is right. I didn't see the documentary though, I'm not very into natur docs.
I've seen only one these otters in my life in the Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki - the last one living in captivity, till it died in the late 90s.
They really are cute little fellas, but highly rare. Even Greenpeace has some kind of a programme to help them.

Today was fantastic. Another of those days which feels like 3 or 4 in one. I went to the beach today? I rode waves? I played cricket for my first time? I ate fish n' chips? I did a footbag demo which went incredibly well? I got to play with a basketball today? All these things happened in one day?

Can't believe its just Friday. Only 2 more full days in Sydney left! Can't complain though, my time here has been absolutely excellent, and there's still good stuff left.

Demos again tomorrow and Sunday. Feel good that I played real lightly today, my hip flexor feels much better for the rest. I'll try and go easy again tomorrow, and cut loose at the big demo on Sunday: Jeremy and I are the halftime show at a soccer game in front of 20,000 people.

Today's soundtrack: The Kinks. More detail later.

Soooooo tired.

Today was pretty fun, but mostly exhausting. Finally met up with Inga, a German shredita backpacking Aussie. We drove out to a Nestle demo in the middle of nowhere, which took a good hour plus of driving. Once there, it was blazing hot out, but free Milo drink and a slightly older (8 year olds?) and more enthusiastic than usual demographic of kids made for a good day.

Inga was sick and the sun didn't help, but I was still really impressed by her. Ripwalks, whirls both sides, solid tiltless foundation. Good stuff. Guido played well too, hitting 10 plos in a row. I hit barfly to whirling swirl for my first time, which was a nice surprise.

The demo ended pretty quickly, but not before I got a lot of chocolate stains on my milo shirt. :? Need to clean that before tomorrow's demo. Once the demo ended, Dyalan headed home, but the remaining 4 of us had a session which Guido taped on tripod. I couldn't believe how many flies there were. It was miserable. Jeremy killed 20+, and I got a good 7 or 8 myself.

Jeremy's knee bothered him, but we still got him hitting a couple really cool triple dex tricks. Sick One material really. Got some more good Guido footage too, and I had a few good strings and combos as well. Hopefully I'll log the tape tonight.

Once we got home, there was still light out, so I took a basketball out to the local courts and had my first shootaround since Worlds, nearly 2 months ago. My shooting touch was still there though, but the hoop was located in front of a hill, so everytime I swished a shot, I had to run down a hill to get the ball. :x

I feel like I could have played more today, but its probably a good thing I didn't, since tomorrow's demo will require the most shreddiness of any of the demos we're scheduled for. Hopefully Jeremy's knee will be back in order, and we can get some good stuff on tape.

Can't wait til we put together a video...

edit: ate kangaroo sausages for dinner tonight. Kiwis for dessert. I feel so Oceanic. 8)

Gah, rough rough day. :(

I've been in Aussie just over 2 weeks now. It's only rained twice, and only once has it been really heavy rain. Unfortunately for me, the heavy rain day was today. For those keeping score at home, today I was scheduled to do a double demo at a soccer game with Jeremy. Because of the rain, the demo was cancelled, and rescheduled for 2 weeks from today. According to my current plane tickets, I won't be here in 2 weeks. :? I don't know what to do yet... I initially bought my tickets to Aussie under the impression that it would work out to be a free trip, and I'd go home with some cash in pocket. When the budget was cut, I decided against cancelling my tickets because it still looked like it'd end up being a free trip to Aussie. But the number of demos dropped again, and I lost 2 demos today due to the weather, so now it looks like I'll actually lose some money on this trip. :? I could extend my trip by a week and pick up a few demos, but my time in Japan is fast dwindling, and I have pressing issues in Japan and America I need to attend to. I feel like I'm being crushed against a rock by my bad luck and circumstances. It feels horrible. I'm tempted to go back to Japan early, but I don't want to let down Jeremy. If I stick around an extra week, I'd have the advantage of getting to see the Great Barrier Reef, which is the thing I most wanted to do in Australia, and I'd be able to go home and say I had a free trip to Aussie. But I don't know if my obligations in Japan and to my parents will let me.

All I can hope is that everything will work out perfectly, and I can look back on this venting post later and marvel how well things worked out. But for now, this is a deep deep low. :(

Packing now, since I'm probably leaving Sydney tomorrow. While packing, I came across my lavers. I only used them once on this trip, on my very first day in Australia. Since then, I've used G-Units. My shins bothered me today, and I think I figured out why: even though my g-units have better support than my lavers, the insoles are still very thin. So tonight I swapped my insoles, and put in my nice, meta-tarsal gel insoles into my g-units. Hopefully this will make my G-units even better. I think the fact that I played for 2 weeks in the Gs without pain is a testament to the inherent superiority of their support. I do look forward to playing in them with the good insoles though.

I'm still not 100% sure what I'm gonna do... still stressed out. But hopefully by tomorrow I will have a battleplan, and that, coupled with the promise of sleep, is reassuring.

I'm at Jeremy's place in Tasmania now. There's another guy here who looks just like him, just with different hair. It's as strange an experience as it sounds.

I'm still not sure what my next few weeks schedule will be. The people who run the Nestle promotion, specifically the marketing company, strike me as incredibly incompetent. They don't call when they say they will, which has cost me money in the past, and its costing me money now. I feel jerked around. :?

I didn't play footbag today, which is probably good for my body. I'm looking forward to playing in my g-units now that they have good insoles in them.

I just finished reading "Choke" by Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club. I'd read Fight Club before, and both books were pretty similar, but I liked it a lot nonetheless.

The other highlight of the day was getting in another Scrabble game with Dyalan today. Dyalan played "raising" and on my next turn, I played "fooled," placing the first three letters of my word under the last three of his. So I ended up forming "if," "no," "go," as well as "fooled." 8)

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have a clearer idea of what's in store. As it looks like now, I'll definitely stick around until the 8th, which means I will get a chance to play with the Brisbane crew.
