Presenting: Santa Cruz Freestyle Footbag

Post by Senor Grommet »

It has been a loing time in coming . . . an introduction to freestyle footbag in Santa Cruz, California. We have a lot of talented footbag players here, some of whom are represented in this video, some of whom are not. I sincerely hope that you'll enjoy this footage, which I truly did attempt to edit. All in all, in fact, I probably put in about 20 hours of time, so please don't hate it.

The video features 4 players and cameos a fifth:
-Fletcher Funk (FunkLovesFootbag on this forum)
-Jeremy Mirken (Senor Grommet on the forum)
-AJ Schultz (avid freestyler and net player)
-Emily Kulczyk (Moxie on this forum)
-Jacob (amazing freestyle and net skills; some of you old schoolers may know him from an appearance at the Western regional Footbag Championships about 6 years ago)

Due to the length of the video (14 minutes), the file size is quite large (148 MB), but it will be well worth because of the fresh footage of several players that none of you have ever seen. Thanks to Mike Hansen for hosting.

Format:
Fletcher (2.5 min)
Jeremy (4 min)
Text over imovie phantom file (1.5 min)
AJ (1 min)
Emily (3.5 min)
Extra footage (1.5 min)

I'm about to walk out the door, but [edit: bad emily :?] thanks for making the video Jeremy. And the clips at the end were great.

I've been anticipating this video since Fletch told me about it, and I was not disappointed. Quite the contrary, as I was pleasantly surprised. You've done wonders with Fletch's shred. Very nice footage!

I've never seen/heard about Jacob, and that was quite an inspiring thing to watch. Doesn't leave much room for me to complain about much of anything.

One criticism (Hopefully those are in the same category as 'comments') I do have is the lack of AJ footage! "We want more AJ!" (I don't know who I'm quoting. I guess I just want more AJ, cause AJ is just so damn cool.)

All in all, great video. Thanks for sharing.

EDIT: I took too long to write all this. Damn you, Emily, you beat me to it :P

I enjoyed your segment, too, of course.

That was awesome. Thanx Jeremy. The final section of you shredding reminded me of Ellis Piltz for some reason. Something about your style, and the fact that you were wearing black lavers might have had something to do with it. So many amazing links in there. Wow.

Hey it was great to see some footage of you Emily. 8O daaang you've really improved since I last kicked with you. I believe that was during the New Years Jam in Chicago last year. Anyways, your pixies/steps/drifters all look really good.

Oh and one more thing, that Michael Jackson song in there was the most random thing ever. Hahaha, I don't know how that could have happened, but either way I found it to be really funny.

Keep in mind that a lot of people can't view mp4 format, so its entirely possible that all 22 views were people who clicked on the thread excited to view the video, but then found that they couldn't. Another possibility is that they were people like you, who were also about to walk out the door, and hence didn't have time to post.

People who post videos are right to hope for comments/critique, but a little patience never hurts. The video had been posted for barely more than an hour before Emily complained about a lack of comments.

Sexcellent video!
I liked it! besides hardcore music that I totally dislike for footbag :(.. but that's because a local player bring's is stereo system with system of a down and brings back bad memory's :D
otherwise excellent music choice, I loved how relaxing the movie was otherwise, you guys seem to have a lot of fun!

Nice video! mp4 ftw! Great quality footage. Jeremy, your game is getting to be off the hook. So many grifters! Emily, you've got really good form, I was impressed! Watch that stepping, though, some of it was pretty low.

That was a cool video. I like to see a mixture of skills. It confused me a lot in the beginning. At first I thought, "Ok, Fletcher's got a good foundation." Then Jeremy came on, and I didn't realize it, and I was like, "Whoa hey! He's got more than a foundation. I guess that was an introduction thingy." Then I realized it was Jeremy. Then I started hearing some other music underneath System of a Down. Ah haha! Your comments on the video about the song cracked me up. I think that that was probably one of the first videos that I've seen a shredita actually shred in a video with other people. Or it's atleast the latest that I've seen. Good job, Emily! I can't say that I've seen improvements from the last time I saw you, because I never did, but keep it up! Was it Jacob who was handicapped? That was amazing to see him shredding it up. All of you keep up the good work!

VERY fun vid. SICK rewind attempt (rolloff broke my heart!) at 13:30. I loved the beatles track at the end - put me in such a good mood. All the players looked really good, but I must say I was most impressed by Emily - what a debut!

Jacob was simply amazing, and I'm starting to feel pretty small for having been so down over a bit of short term ligament damage.

Thanks for the compliments. Yeah, my stepping is awfully low most of the time which is something I'm working on currently. But thanks for the suggestion. :-)

Woah, sorry Ken and all, I hadn't realized that my comment had come off as being so harsh. But you're right, I had looked at the views and not the time it was posted.

Please don't confuse my comment with anything related to Jeremy saying that comments are welcome. We are separate people and I don't speak for him.

Nice vid.

I just kept thinking of the shred spots. I love that mini garage, and the mailbox corner. I wonder what freestyle stories those walls can tell :) .

Micheal Jackson ghost song was awesomely hillarious. I didn't fast forward.

It was nice to see the peeps I hear Emily mention, and my 2 good pals.

That video fuckin rocked!

-Fletch i love music during ur part, n those are some fuckin clean toes brother.

-Jeremy u ripped it up like always.

-AJ im gonna have to agree with what dave posted about more AJ footage, i love ur technique.

-Emily u tore it up, threw in some sick moves i hadnt seen u bust much. your section was way sick.

-Jacob i think i enjoy watching you play the most, so inspiring.

I dunno whats up with the weird ass michele jackson none sense, but the video still kicked ass and that beatles song give it a beautiful ending touch.

Cant wait to see more, but in person, hopefully i will be comming up to Santa Cruz sometime in the next couple weeks to see fletch n kick it some more.

Thanks everyone for the comments. They really do put a smile on my face. I'm glad I was able to be the first to put out original footage of Fletcher and Emily. One day, they will both be very good, not that they aren't now, but they'll get a lot better. I am amazed whenever I watch Jacob kick!

Oh man! I can't believe someone beat me to putting an RJD2 song into a footbag video. . . and the same song too. Awesome video too. Nothing really to add. Great variety of shred. Excellent style and control to everyone. Made my afternoon prepped for some shred myself so thanks.
