pretty sure that the chickens and eggs that I eat are locally produced.

I don't think there will ever be a really serious apocalypse style flu or other disease. I think it's all just hype and scare mongering. Considering how few people die from the bird flu it's really fairly insignificant compared with people crashing cars or getting cancer from smoking.

That said, I hope it kills all the damn vegans ;)

I don't think you quite understand what the "hype" is about. As things are now, the deaths from avian influenza due to human bird interaction are quite minimal. The fear is that the virus mutates into a form that can be spread from human to human. If that gets to be the case, then it will very likely become a pandemic. The chances that this occurs increase with increased human interaction with infected birds.

When will you people realize that the fear of a pandemic and, if it happens, it's just what this world needs! Less people is fine by me. Just as long as those less people aren't footbaggers, of course. :P

It's this long period of little infection when the virus is able to mutate into a human to human trasmissible form. In fact, it's the least deadly viruses that kill the msot people because of the ability to spread and infect much greater numbers than a really deadly outbreak that kills all of the infected quickly.

When this virus emerges in human to human passable form, it will be around the world in less than a day due to the wonders of air travel.

It's a very serious issue, and is much more than hype.

You can't get it from eating bird or bird products. Only with close contact with infected birds. So all you pirates out there better watch out.

I know that.

Like I said, the chances that the virus mutates into a human to human transferable form increases with increased human interaction with infected birds.

Why, you might ask, are humans interacting with these birds in the first place? It is primarily because people want to eat chicken / eggs.

The disease doesn't spread because of humans eating chickens.

It will became a pandemic because of "free range" chickens.

If each were kept in their own matchbox, none of this would have happened.

You're right -- the disease spreads among birds through other birds. That isn't quite what people are worried about. What people are worried about is the virus mutating into a form that is able to be transmitted from humans to humans. The likelihood of this mutation occurring increases as human interaction with infected birds increases. Like I said before, this primary reason for this interaction is that people want to eat chicken.

yeah, it was actually a joke. but half the time im pretty sure some supporters of PETA would sooner see people die than animals. with some of their campaigns they do, in fact, put humans in danger at the price of saving some animals that are pretty much overpopulating the planet. obviously some animals are endangered and need saving, but im actually suprised we havent seen more PETA demonstrations in places where they are killing chickens to stop the spread of bird flu (the same with mad cow disease) probably an exxageration, but most people would admit a lot of PETA's tactics are extreme. however, this is all off-topic.

on-topic...i would say there are probably more immediate threats to the global community.
