SONY Plasystation 3 is to be released infected with DRM that won't allow games to be played on consoles other than the one it is first used in. This means no game rentals, no second hand stores.

I've also heard the games will keep track of the hours played, and required puchases to renew the license to the game after an unknown number of hours.

A slashdot user with inside connections also relayed that backwards compatibility wasn't possible due to a change in processor. So no PS1 or PS2 games will be usable either.

This from the same company that released music media infected with DRM that installed rootkits onto the computers of their customers.

SONY won't be getting my business this holiday season.

Goddamn DRM's are on everything and everywhere, even Macs. Makes the rootkit so vulnerable to viruses and malicious spyware hijacking. I hope everyone uses a third-party DRM-removal software for iTunes and such. I hope the class-action suit resolves this issue... although, I'm sure Sony will just find a new method to spy on us and try to maximize their profit.

Don't they understand that there will always be a way around these things and that they are marginalizing the general home electronics consumer and losing their business? Pirates will always find a way to pirate.

I hate playstations, their controllers make me weep. I hate them even more now that they made a Nightmare before Christmas game and its only playable on it.

PS3 isnt going to be released this holiday season any way.
I doubt they will make that mistake with the ps3, everyone would hate it if they did that.
xbox360 looks kinda lame so far also. looks only slightly better than xbox.
nintendos new controller looks like it could be cool though.

Rootkits are devices that interfere with the normal opperation of your computer. Generally they intercept system calls and substitute their own routines, thus presenting false information abotu the system to the user.

Rootkits take the ability to secure ones own machines out of the hands of the owner.

Sony Music has been distributing Music Media Discs, that are marketed as CDs, which infect computers with their rootkit DRM. Several Trojans have appeared since the rootkits were revealed publicly.

Sony has implemented a procedure where users can get software to remove the rootkit. The removal process potentially opens up bigger security issues than the rootkit itself. Plus, it doesn't make sense to have to rely on the distributer of rootkits to remove them. For all we know they only change the cloaking mechanism and leave the kit on the machine.

A rootkit is a set of software tools a 3rd party uses after gaining access to your computer. Usually this third party is an intruder, but as we can see, SONY puts it on their cds so people who play a cd on their computer will unwittingly have this rootkit installed. The rootkit has a set of tools that conceals running processes and system data amongst other files which helps this intruder maintain access to your system without your knowledge.

SONY, has installed this rootkit to hide the fact that they are gaining access to your system and is probably keeping tabs on how many times your cd is played, copied, etc. Just a way to spy on you without your knowledge. That is why they are getting the class-action suit because it is against the consumer's right against spyware.

Many hackers also hijack the SONY rootkit, now found on many computers, to hide their own processes and files and viruses and spyware.

SONY makes no apology about the installation of this rootkit, however, I do remember them having a link about how to remove it on their website.

This isnt gonna happen with the PS3

What if your Playstation Broke and they had to warranty a new one to you? Your games also wouldnt work? What if you own 2 playstations 3's? All they have is a patent for technology that would allow this, and I don't believe they would be pulling that stunt especially after MS already releasing the XBOX 360 6-9 months ahead of Sony.

That's a nice belief, but Sony isn't working very hard to convince me the rumours are false.

They have infected computers with their rootkits.

They have advanced a removal scheme that leaves computers vulnerable to more attacks, and actually forces users to open their machines up to attacks to get the code. (Only idiots download rootkit removal code from the purveyor of the rootkit)

They have shown no remorse, and are actively persuing changes in the DRM implementation.

Games won't be portable between consoles, or available for rent at blockbuster. The PS 3 itself will require regular updates to the core system, which are expected to cost between $75 ad $200 a piece.

That is the story. Let Sony convince me it's not all true, because it's all within what they have shown they are capable of doing.

Ninteno has always put out quality systems that play games very well. I look forward to joining the revolution. Plus I think the new controller looks sweet.

Plus the revolution is supposed to have backwards compatibility for all 20 years of nintendo games.

I'd personally be shocked, and would hop right on board the Sony-hating bandwagon. I mean, to be honest, their PS2 systems broke down a lot. I went through 3 total myself. I seriously doubt however, that this type of limited game licensing and core upgrade cost will happen. Sony would lose a ton of customers as a direct result, and sales would plummet.

They may have some shady practices when it comes to making faulty equipment and such, but they were already SUED for that, and just recently settled a class-action suit against them. I have a feeling they're gonna play it safe with the PS3 this time around. I could be wrong however. Someone quote me in Spring when PS3 comes out, and I'll do something crazy if I'm wrong. Like drink a whole bottle of Texas Pete hot sauce or something.

The PS3 will be backwards compatible. The hardware isn't the same as the PS2 or PS, but it will run through emulation. That's the same way the PS2 plays PS games.

I think all those are rumours except for the upkeep. I have no doubts that they will break down quickly like my PS2

I read on the IGN site that it was completely backwards compatible...and I don't care what rootkitted DRM DMR RDM MRD things are in it, as long as Metal Gear Solid 4, I'm gonna be a happy camper

That and every other game they are putting work into looks beautiful thus far.
