Yeah totally. I think Australia is the second fattest country in the world after the US - so statistically US children are fatter than any other children in the world (but soon Aussies will win that competition too ;) )

I would guess the reasons are both diet and lack of physical activity. Ie. Americans (and Australians) eat a lot of "snack food" and a lot of fairly unhealthy food such as fried food or sugary food. Also the main forms of entertainment seem to be watching tv (ie. no physical activity), playing video games (very little physical activity), watching movies (no physical activity), listening to music (little physical activity) and watching sporting games (little physical activity). Things like playing sports, playing music, going to the beach/park etc. seem to be less common. My theory for this is that those activities that are healthy are also basically free - so there is no money to be made from advertising. Getting people to watch tv or buy games and music etc. has the potential to make a great deal of money (and does) so there is much more advertising for those products and so people do them more. Same with food - healthy food is actually fairly cheep - especially if you cook it yourself (ie. fruit and vegetables, rice, pasta etc.) - so there is much less money to be made - hence much fewer advertisements for bananas and lots of ads for McDonalds. There does seem to be a slow move towards promoting foods as healthy in Australia these days but it's unclear if this is having much effect or not. Plenty of items that are not actually very healthy are still advertised as being healthy and good for you too.

"America is the bestest country in the world" primarily because we are the best educated.

hahahah thats a bloody funny picture. My psychology teacher is always preaching "why are we americans so fa?t" And I look around the classroom and see a room full of 90 lb blonds with tank tops and jeans that cut about 10 inches below the belly button. "who is she talking about" I always wonder to aloud the random hottie sitting next to me?
Sterio types are fun.
Well, actually it's not just a stereotype - it's a fact. (We Finns are one of the fattest (even second fattest after US?) people in the world, I don't have that problem though, luckily, thank God).
Though so many US citizens are below the "poorness level" that I believe that you won't keep the first place very long, if it goes this way.
----

There really is an organization called the United Nations but too bad it can do almost nothing by itself, IF even one of the biggest member countries uses veto. (NOTE: I don't remember any facts about any specific country vetoing about one specific thing, but I think we all know they're doing that. And not just the USA). Still, the biggest countries can make their own decisions about things as they want them to be.
I think it's a good thing that Saddam doesn't have the power in Iraq anymore but it's not an excuse to make a war operation without planning it well enough. Obviously the situation there at the moment isn't very much better than it was before the war, and it seems that the Coalition is a bit lost there not exactly knowing what to do.
If someone tells me that the war started just to save lives there, I'd disagree. Oil was definitely one of the main targets, as well as getting a foot to the Middle East.

I really think that as a global super power as the USA is, they should the power, but they should use it right. The US can't afford this situation, it should make more friends as soon as possible and try to keep the old friends aswell (France, Germany).

I also think that the European Union should use the global power more for good and not just be hypocrits about how the Yanks do it all wrong. We aren't always right, the US isn't always right and we both actually don't know the culture of each other well enough. (Let's make a change here - footbag is IMO a good way to get even some of us nearer each other and to understand each other better).

----

Just read last week from the newspaper that Bush (and China and Russia too) are planning to send men again to Moon and then to Mars. What's the point with that? The robots can make the same things there as men and even better. I admit, it's probably cool to walk on the Moon but still - isn't that a damn big waste of money for a couple of men's dream? With that money we could do some development on Earth and make this a bit better place than it's now.

Well said, Lauri. I think this is the first time someone's made a decent post about this subject in this thread instead of yelling at one another.

Are there trailer parks for trailer trash in Europe or is that still an American mainstream? Oh wait, I guess we need the trailer parks for all the fatties we have...

It's true.

I don't think so, or at least they don't live in trailers. The society takes very good care of everyone. ...though the people could be thinner. :)

I'd like to live in Ireland, too.

Corn beef, potatoes, and the fact that the entire nation's tanked 24/7! :P I'd go for the corn beef.
