Animal Group Names

Post by shredzilla »

Everyone knows that a group of geese is a flock. What about other animal group names? Did you know a group of monkeys is a troop? A group of crows is called a 'murder'. How about a 'congregation' of alligators? Or a 'crash' of rhinos? My personal favorite is a 'cackle' of hyenas!

Anyway, here's a link that has all those animal group names, and the names of male and female of each species. Enjoy.

Smack of Jellyfish is unbeatable. Murder of crows is second. Pride of lions is pretty good.

It's actually a gaggle of geese.

Kindle of kittens, murder of crows, flock of sheep, herd of antelope, shrewdness of apes, colony of beavers, swarm of bees, gang of bison, coalition of cheetah, brood of chicken, siege of crane, mob of deer, kennel of dogs, aerie of eagles, parade of elephants, cast of falcons...that's all I can think of...

You know, you can make this lots easier for yourself by googling it.

^^^How do you think I got the link?^^^Actually it was Yahoo though. There's a bunch of different sites with animal group names. I just think it's interesing that someone way back when named them all. A 'raft' of otters? See, the sucky part is most of us will never see groups of animals like that except on TV anyway, so the best we can hope for is somehow mentioning it casually in conversation at a party and sounding really smart!

Edit: Cept for Jeremy, cuz he lives in the Outback, where he sees 'crossings' of zebra pretty frequently :P

Luckily for people who live in the mountains and other states/provinces like Montana, we actually can see a lot of those animal groups. Well, that is if you don't suck and go out and enjoy the wilderness. :)
