Yesterday, November 10th, 2005 I had a tweaked muscle in my back. It was the sort of aggravated muscle that whenever I took a moderately deep breath, I'd feel pain, and I was incapable of taking a complete, full breath.

Naturally, I still got in a shred 8)

Due to my breathing problems, I figured that long runs would be a bad idea, so I focussed mostly on just drilling components, and going for consecutive records on random tricks. Guido's apartment complex reeked so bad of fertilizer, that we played on the street, which was slanted in 2 directions, and was curved. Not ideal circumstances, but we played remarkably well considering.

Following my battle plan, I made a point to practice my flip pixies. I am determined to incorporate them into my game, which means I need to put in the time now. Towards that end, I worked on some drills. The only standout was pixie ss mirage-parkwalk-blur repeat, which I hit pretty easily. I was most proud of hitting 2 consecutive flip magellans. Curious to see how my strong compared, I hit 14 magellans strong side a minute later  The other good flip pixie moment was hitting flip clip dlo to flip pixie butterfly for my first time, and bsosing it.

Some other consecs that I hit were:
-pdx drifter x3, both sides
-whirl x 10 flip, x12 strong
-diving butterfly x7, x9 other side
-dyno x3! :D
-drifter x14
-ducking clipperx32
-rev swirl x4 8)

I also messed around with some reverse whirling tricks, just for the hell of it. Reverse whirling swirl felt pretty cool. Using the other reverse whirl, pixie ss reverse whirl and stepping ss reverse whirl were also both new, but I don't really like either that much.

Guido played pretty well. The best was seeing a 14 contact guiltless string with lots of variety. Osis to ducking clipper, pdx mirage to pixie butterfly, and good guiltless bails. Likely the best string I've seen him hit yet.

Overall I was glad I played. I skooled my base components, put adds on my G-Units, and didn't hurt myself trying anything stupid. It paid off too, as I woke up this morning pain-free. :)

My last demo in Australia is today, at a soccer game in front of 20,000 people. Jeremy and I are the halftime show. Dyalan and Jeremy came over this morning, and Dyalan and I got a scrabble game in while Jeremy caught up on sleep. It was our 7th Scrabble game together, and we've made noticeable improvement. Today we both scored over 300, and we both played bingos (when you use all 7 letters from your rack). Dyalan's word was "snuggle" and mine was "filially." I had to use both blanks to get mine, but it was worth it cause I got the 50 pt bonus, and my word was really cool.

Yesterday (November 12th, 2005) Guido and I had a session. My back felt fine, and the weather was good. I figured it was my last good chance to get some Sick 3s, Sick Tricks, and Sick 15s on video to enter in the modified competitions, so the only goal I had heading out was to ignore long strings, and hit combos specifically for the camera. There were swarms of flies, which really got under my skin, but I still managed to get some good stuff on camera. Hopefully I'll be able to enter them in the next comp though, so I won't go into detail on them. I hit my Sick 3 twice, and one of my Sick Tricks 3 times, just in case anything was "the." Insurance. At the end of the day, I successfully managed to get a Sick 15 on tape (24 contacts, but the first 15 are submittable), a 6 add sick trick, a cheesy 7 add sick trick, a bad-ass 6 add sick trick, and a stylish sick 3. We also got several 20+ strings on tape, and one 35+ string, so hopefully we can make a short video using those. I was really stoked to hit one of my Sick Tricks, because I had never hit it before, and it's not the sort of trick you'd pick me to hit. We got everything shot in 40 minutes worth of tape, so we didn't even have to spend very long to log the tapes!

Guido was feeling shin-splinty all session, so he hardly played. Still, he hit his first toe blur in shoes, and got it on tape. He's one of the only people I know who hit toe blur before clipper blur

My legs feel good today, so hopefully we'll rock the shit out of today's demo. Go footbag! 8)

Nothing sexy, just wanted to let various people know I made it back to Japan safely, and the blog seemed a good place to do it.

I spent a day and a half in transit, due to missing a connecting flight. I was in Australia a full month, and only took 2 days off from kickysack. I deserve a break.

I knew the last couple days would be emotionally brutal, but I somehow erroneously figured that having that prior knowledge would somehow make it all easier. Stupid Ken :?

So the day has finally come. After 3.5 years, I`m returning to America for my first time. Somehow though, it feels less like going to America, and more like leaving Japan. I`m excited to see my family, but I`m also aware that I`m leaving family here. That was painfully clear to me 2 nights ago, at my farewell party

Still, if saying goodbye wasn`t hard, that wouldn`t reflect well on how I spent my time here. The painfulness of the goodbye is a testament to the depth of the friendships I made, and how much the Japanese footbag scene is a part of me.

I`ll write a more in-depth entry when I get to Arizona. I had my farewell shred 2 days ago. I kicked pretty much every day for a month straight while in Australia, but took 5 days off upon returning to Tokyo. Despite the time off, I shredded my ass off at the farewell shred, as did everybody else. A very good note to end on. Details to come later.

皆様本当に本当に心からありがとうございます。また一緒に蹴りましょう! :)

Made it safely "back" to Arizona. Just wanted to let everybody in Japan know I made it home safely. I've been awake for... a day and a half now? 2 days? Completely exhausted, eyes burning, but good to see the folks and be reunited with my books.

Hopefully get in a good zine entry tomorrow.

Are you near Prescott Valley, AZ?

A kid who was great at footbag from my town moved there. His name is Wyatt Davis. He is registered at footbag.org, but probably not at his AZ house

November 20th, 2005: My last session in Japan

I woke up feeling decent physically. Though I hadn't played for 5 days straight, I had the confidence that I could play well, thanks to playing nearly every day for a month in Australia. I also find that when you haven't exercised in a while, you can kick a lot of ass the first day you come back, but you pay for it the day after. Since today would be my last day shredding in Japan, the plan was to go full out, cause any ill after-effects wouldn't matter.

With my days in Japan dwindling, I was counting every meal, and making a point to eat my favorite dishes while I still had a chance. That meant that lunch today had to be ramen, so I hit Jangara Ramen pretty early and ate a big bowl of kakunin iri ramen. It was every thing I hoped for, but incredibly filling. An hour and a half after eating, I still felt it's presence in my stomach, but half an hour into shred, it was already a non-issue.

I trained over to Shin Okubo, and walked to the Cosmic Center (the gym where we held several footbag tournies). The weather was actually decent out, so Kim and I were tempted to hold the last jam in Yoyogi, for old time's sake. We finally decided on playing in a gym though, which I think was the right decision. While Yoyogi would have been nice emotionally, there was also a good chance I wouldn't warm up well (I have terrible circulation), and I thought it important to leave Japan on good terms: playing well.

I hit Cosmic wicked early, and met up with Kim at the MacDonalds across the street. I'm glad we were both early, since it gave us a chance to catch up and hang out, like old times. Kim has been real busy lately, so we hadn't hung out as much as I hoped to when I moved to Tokyo. I gave him some omiyage (souvenirs) from Australia, and while we were talking, a new footbagger approached us to introduce himself. Tsunayama. I thought it was a really great sign that at my last session in Japan there were still new players entering the scene. I really hope the Japanese scene continues to grow steadily in the coming years.

Finally, 1 pm rolled around and we could enter the gym. Lots of good memories of that gym... TSG, TSG2, JFC3, and countless other visits. Shortly, Takumi and a few others showed up, and soon we were already shredding our way through warm up. I was really stoked to play with Takumi again. While I was in Australia, he hit a new (to him) 7 add trick, which I had read about (watch the November Sick One contest!). I also just love shredding with him, it's always such a positive vibe. Johnny Murphy is likely still better than Takumi, but after Johnny, Takumi has to be the best shredder outside the Americas and Europe.

During our 2 man warm up, Takumi hit 2 tricks which really made me happy. The first was flurry, which had nice deep dexes and was real controlled. He hit that for the first time while I was in Aussie; I think today was only his second or third time nailing it. The other trick that I was stoked to see, was double over swirl! First time ever too! The reason I was so happy to see him hit those two tricks, was that I gave him extensive tips on them back in early September, telling him to file away the advice til he was ready to go for the tricks. Seeing him hit both on my last day in Japan made me feel like maybe I had some small positive impact on his game, and that made me feel great.

Other shredders trickled in steadily, and by the end of the day I was really moved and happy by how many people could make it. Suekitchi even showed up for 15 minutes just to say goodbye, even though he didn't have time to shred. That meant a lot to me. By the end of the day, I had shredded with Takumi, USK, Kim, Masa, Morii, X+Y, Haseken, Naoki, Sho, Bunko, Kussy, Nari, Hatsu, Tosh, and some new guys.

Kim played in Lavers, which was a bit of a weird throwback to see. He has a footbag demo next month with the other Team Twist guys, so they thought it best if they all wear the same shoes. Kim said that switching back to Lavers was weird, since he thinks clipper stalls are way easier in Climas. Didn't seem to slow him down much though, considering he hit barroque! 8O :)

Takumi played real well all day. Double spinning clippers and osii. Aforementioned flurry and double over swirl. New fearless record: spinning whirl-mobius-pdx blender-ps whirl! 8O He also hit the coolest combo of the entire day: gyro blizzard to smoke! 8) Awesome.

I played at the top of my game, which was a relief. Mostly I just wanted to show off the Guido Units, and my new, improved, flip pixies. Succeeded in both. I hit smoke bsos solidly, only my 3rd time ever, and easily my strongest and most controlled to date. Diving pdx torque got a good reaction. Sonic clipper. Mostly just hit a lot of cool 2 trick links to start off long strings.

Whoops, gotta run, be back to edit in the cool combos later today

Sobetsukai Part 2

Post by C-Fan »

continued from last post.

I was real happy with how I played all day. I hit a bunch of new 2 trick combos, and some combos that I hadn't hit in ages and are hard for me. Some of the more notable were:

-bedwetter to toebius
-tapping dlo to double over swirl
-flurry to atomsmasher
-Pixie ss dlo to smoke
-bedwetter to toe whirling swirl
-symp whirling infinity to pdx torque
-stepping ss eggbeater to toe ripwalk
-pogo pdx dlo to toe gyro dlo :!:
-parkwalk swirl
-diving pdx torque
-pixie ss dyno first try to kick off a string.

I also hit a cool fearless string: ewalk-fog-darkwalk-blurry whirl-ps whirl-pdx torque. The blurry whirl felt real clean on both ends, which I was excited about, because I sometimes slur my steps out of darkwalk.

The gym closed at 4:30, but I made the most of the time. By the time we got kicked out, I had played with everybody, and was exhausted. Whenever people gave me props on flip pixies or dynos or other new aspects of my game, I attributed it to the Guidos. You can buy G-Units in Japan too, so hopefully somebody will give them a try.

After the shred, we all hit an isakaya for dinner and drinks. We had to share a room with a different group of people who were having a drinking party to celebrate some tournament win, and they were really cool. I don't know what was their cause for celebration, but they bought us several food dishes, which was totally random and cool of them. The drinking, joking, and fooding on our side went real well too. It was just the right number of people, and there was an excellent, silly vibe throughout. I thought that I'd have to give a big farewell speech at the end, but it didn't end up working out that way. Instead, I did several individual farewells over the course of the night, which I think is much better, since they were more personalized and meaningful. Usually my farewells were a mix of shared memories, challenges (to improve the Japanese scene in several ways), and promises to see people again, be it at tournaments or elsewhere. Each farewell was hard in its own way, and I ended up crying at the end of more than a couple. Good farewells though. I even got a call from Kansai, where the Osaka shredders had just wrapped up a shred. It wasn't the best connection, but getting the chance to say goodbye to Yuko, Kenzo, and QP felt like it made the night complete.

Towards the end of the night, I was presented with a big hi-no-maru (Japanese flag) which was signed by almost everybody in the community. I was really moved by it, and when I later read some of the messages, I cried. Adam Catt wrote his in incredibly good Japanese too, which impressed the hell out of me. After my last goodbye at Harajuku station with Yusuke, I walked home clutching my Japanese footbag flag and managed to dam the tears til I got home.

All in all, it was a great day. My final Japanese shred had a great turnout, and everybody played real well. The sobetsukai was fun, and the goodbyes were difficult emotionally, but satisfying. I really hope I do go to Worlds in Frankfurt and meet up with everybody again there, but until the next time I see them, I feel at peace with my farewell to Japan.

First US Session in 3.5 years

Post by C-Fan »

I touched down in the US on Tuesday, and only now do I feel like I'm getting somewhat adjusted. After three and a half years of living in Japan, coming back to the US was definitely a shock to the system. The transition was even bigger than expected, since I didn't return to my hometown, NYC, but rather I landed in Arizona. During my time in Japan, my folks retired and moved to the desert, so not only am I getting readjusted to lots of fat people, driving on the right side of the road again, and chatty store clerks; but I am also getting used to stepping in cactus needles, hearing coyotes at night, and listening to country music at fast food joints.

Thankfully though, I have footbag, the great constant, the constant joy, the sport of the Gods. Going back at least 8 years, I've leaned on footbag several times to re-center myself, to remind me who I am, to settle down and at least get in the right frame to make sense of things. When I've broken up with girlfriends, moved to foreign countries, been pissed about something, whatever, playing footbag has calmed me down and made it all seem OK. So getting in a proper shred yesterday (November 26th, 05) was just what I needed to help me get used to being "back" stateside, at a stage where I figure out what's next.

It really was a bit weird to think that I hadn't played footbag in the US since July 2002. Most of my basic equipment hadn't even been invented back then! But as I warmed up yesterday, kicking my mini-Abshire bag with my G-Units, I felt the same peace, the same drive, the same adrenaline that I did back in Union Square all those sessions before heading to Japan. Coming back to the States is definitely a rebirth (I flew into Phoenix!), but having footbag makes it easier.

When I bought my tickets to come to Arizona, I was a bit apprehensive that I wouldn't have anybody to play with, but thankfully there are 2 really dedicated shredders relatively near me. I e-mailed with them for a while, and we set up a shred for yesterday. I was so excited about the shred, that I kept waking up the night before with dreams that they'd have trouble finding my house. When the big shred day rolled around, my worries proved groundless, as Johnny dropped by my house with no problems.

I'd actually met Johnny (Baldwin) at Worlds 2004, but never had the chance to shred with him. Even though we live in Tucson, we organized the shred in Casa Grande, which was a good one hour drive away. I'm still adjusting to the Arizonan concepts of "near" and "far." On the car ride to Casa Grande, Johnny mentioned that a 4th shredder would be joining us. To my surprise, shredder #4 was none other than..... wait for it..... Nathan Oates aka Highdemonslayer!!! 8O 8O 8O This revelation triggered 5 minutes of me jumping up and down in my seat laughing and repeatedly saying: "oh my god, this is too good! I can't wait to meet him! Modified won't believe this! You need to get video of us hugging and giving each other props! This is too good!" Unfortunately, Nate didn't show, but there's still the possibility of me shredding with my online nemesis, which really tickles me.

We get into Casa Grande a little late, and Mike Jauss is there waiting for us. Both Mike and Johnny are in their 30s, but they are more hardcore and enthusiastic about footbag than most teenagers I have met. This is good news for me, since it means they are willing to drive ridiculous distances and juggle difficult schedules just to kick the old beanbag with me. We set up shop by a skatepark, and warm up a little bit. They give me props on my 43 BOP warm up, which bodes well for my ego. Mike brought a booming sound system, and for the next 4+ hours I got "rocked like a hurricane" by bands and songs I'd not heard since High School. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, you name it. I'd never shredded to Heavy Metal before, but there's a first time for everything. I remember back in the day, maybe 2002, seeing Sebastien Duschesne do a routine to "The Hurricane" by Bob Dylan. For some reason, the thought of him doing a routine to "Rock You Like a Hurricane" really cracked me up.

Mike and Johnny impressed me. They both have pretty solid guiltless fundamental games, with a sprinkling of sets and downtime components. Mike really surprised me, since his style is uncannily like Richie Abshires. The way he holds his arms, the posture, the way his BOPs and dlos look, everything. Good dedication to his flipside too. Johnny has good variety in his game, and is working on his linking ability. He can hit blurs, dynos, torques, etc, but is still mastering putting them all together. I think they both have a good enough foundation, that hopefully they can make some major breakthroughs real soon, possibly with the help of some of my advice.

Yesterday's shred was pretty draining. We played over 4 hours, quite easily, but figuring in average string length, I got exhausted towards gthe end, while they were still good for a couple more hours. We did play a game of 3-square somewhere in the middle, which was fun, but we really could use a 4th. I think playing with Nate Oates would really motivate me. Throughout the shred there were a bunch of young kids who watched, and at one point they asked to borrow a bag, and we lent them a sandman and I gave them some tips for a bit. I was glad to see people show interest, but they weren't really the age bracket I'd like to target. Hopefully we can get a session or two at the university, cause I think that'd be a good place to find potential shredders. Worst case scenario, at least I'd get to look at pretty girls.

The shred itself was good, and we filmed for a bit, but I don't recall too much standing out. I did have a string with tripwalk, toe sidewalk, and toe blur all both sides in the same run, which was a pleasant surprise. My flip pixies also felt good throughout, which led to one of two notable new combos of the day: pixie ss dlo to toebius. Overall though, I mostly went for long strings over hard combos, and had several 30+ runs and a couple 40+ as well. Towards the end I was pretty out of ideas, so I'd ask Mike to name a 5 add trick, and Johnny to name one, and then I'd try and link them. That led to me getting tomahawk to mobius for my first time, but I planted on the mobius. At the very end of the day, I asked for a string of 3s and 4s, and after a few tries, I hit the request: legbeater-blur-dimwalk-barfly-far swirl-torque-drifter-drifter. Lucky for me that was almost entirely strong side tricks.

It was warm out, but due to the dry air, I never really sweated. Kind of a weird feeling, being hot but not sweating. Made a point to drink lots of water, and in the end I think I balanced out things well. After the shred, we hit a fast food Mexican place for lunch. Del Taco. To my surprise, it was really really good, and cheap to boot. I got a fish taco, and a spicy jack quesadilla, both which were better than any Mexican food I could find in 3 years of searching in Japan. That plus a drink was $5.51. I could get used to non-Tokyo prices for food... :)

Overall an excellent day of shred. It's always a thrill to play with new shredders, it just pumps me up. Everybody felt satisfied with how they played, and I think we all just generally hit it off. Hopefully we'll end up getting 2 sessions a week, which should be enough to keep my game from deteriorating too much. Go footbag. 8)

Ken what you've done in Japan is quite a feat. Well done. Next: come and teach English and / or Japanese in Europe (really) if you still have the travel bug! Oh by the way props on your combos with special mention for:

-pogo pdx dlo to toe gyro dlo

cool link of two cool, hard, rare, styly tricks. props.

atomic session

Post by C-Fan »

Had a surprisingly good solo session yesterday (November 29th, 2005). It was getting late and I didn't particularly feel like playing, but I had finished my errands for the day, there were no NBA games on TV, and Modified was dead. I figured it never hurts to put adds on the shoes, so I laced up and played for an hour. I'm so glad I did!

I started the session off mostly just drilling flip pixies midstring. They feel pretty good still, but I definitely need to make a point to continue skooling them. Hit 5/6 of magellan-dimwalk-schmoe repeat pretty easily. The main trick I wanted to hit today was alpine tap. I had hit alpine legbeater several times in the past, but I think that had been my only atomic-ducking (freudian) trick to date. I figured that if I could hit a butterfly, I should also be able to hit a mirage. Sure enough, within a few attempts, I hit my first alpine tap. Encouraged by how easy it was, I decided to try and play out of it with something better than a BOP. Moments later: alpine tap-smog-smoke to start a small string :) I really started to feel like I was getting the hang of atomic ducking, so I kept playing with it. Sure enough, I got alpine flux within a few minutes. Again, I decided it would be cooler to seal with a non-BOP, so I managed to hit it again and seal it with a PS whirl. My train of thought led me to trying eclipse; after all, if I can hit butterfly out of a set, I must be able to hit eclipse. Amazingly, I ended up hitting my first atomic ducking eclipse... on my very first try! 8O :D Loaded with the confidence this gave me, I set out to hit alpine atom, and sure enough, hit 3 or 4 by the end of the session.

After having so much success with atomic ducking, I figured my atomic must be good enough to hit some basic atomic 5s which had eluded me this long. I decided to try for atomic drifter, and focussed on really bringing the dex leg back down as fast as possible after the dex, and having it return to the spot where it left the floor. Sure enough, this new way of thinking bought me some more time, and *bam!* Atomic drifter! I hit 3 or 4 all night, but never managed to seal with anything other than butterflies. By this point in the session, I was feeling pretty guilty that I was hitting all my cool new atomic tricks using the same atomic set. So I spent some time trying for predator using my flip atomic, and had some close looks, but no success. I decided to go back to my strong side, and see what else I could hit, using my new atomic style. While I was feeling good about it, I was completely surprised when I managed to hit atomic blender on my very first try! 8O 8O Atomic blender! :D How cool is that! It was also something of a milestone, since it's probably the only 6 add trick that I've hit (for the first time) on my very first try. :)

At this point I was pretty satisfied with all my new tricks, and decided to try and put them in combos. I had one combo start with alpine atom, then later had pixie diving mirage in the same run. I started another run with alpine tap-smoke, then had pixie diving ss osis in the same run. I tried to mix things up, so I skooled some dexless mid-session, and was stoked to hit 10 dexless. Atomic ducking eclipse to dlo felt very stylish.

I decided to close out my session by focussing on combos using alpine legbeater. Alpine leg-fog-smoke. Alpine leg- pdx torque-pdx blender. Then, inspired by this blog entry:

Finally, I closed out the session with this combo: alpine leg-fog-darkwalk-blurry whirl-ps whirl-pdx torque.

So glad I played yesterday...
