We are filming a movie about Hacky Sack in Lafayette, Louisiana from December 15th to January 15th of this year and are looking for some good hacky sack players who want to be involved. The time commitment is flexible, as we anticipate a number of people will want to get involved. This will be a limited release, but you will be compensated and will receive a DVD when production is over. If you are in the area, or have any questions about it, please contact us at [email protected] or call (504)343-2357.

This is not a student film, we have a budget (however small) and plan on making the video available for purchase upon release.

Contact us if you want to get involved! It is a really fun project and a chance to meet some good people in the movie industry. Also, if you know of any other good web footbag forums in which to post this information, please email me or reply to this thread.

Yeah, I recommend AGAINST being in this movie, until you have a chance to talk to the director and educate him/her on the culture of footbag. I will attempt to call him and see what we can do. This could turn out to be something good. Although I'm sure his phone is probably blowing up since last night, and by the time I get around to talking to him he'll know everything there is to know about the sport.

seriously...call him and refuse to honor this until it gets accurate, which would make a MUCH MUCH better and cooler movie than a movie about hacky slackers. it could be pretty big.

Lighten up, guys.

There are, in fact, MANY more people out there who like to kick around a crocheted bag in a circle than there are dedicated shredders. Many of them may be unaware of freestyle shred, and would be happy to find out. Others are already aware and do not care. Some of these people are very dedicated to their way of playing the game. Many others are simply not looking for a serious sport to dedicate themselves too (and perhaps that is part of the appeal of circle kicking: its laid-back attitude). I think it would be good to get some serious shred in their movie. I think it would be bad to try to dictate to them what their movie should be about.
talk to the director and educate him/her on the culture of footbag.
Again, get real. The culture of freestyle shred encompasses a whopping few thousand people. The culture of hacky sack is somewhere between 100 and 1000 times that size (actually, I suspect that there are more than 10,000 times as many people who have enjoyed kicking a bean-bag around in a circle as there are shredders who have dedicated months or years to mastering strings of tricks). This fella posted on footbag.org, I'm sure he's not ignorant of our little culture. However, to think that the whole world of footbag revolves around freestyle shred certainly is ignorant.

Consider, as an analogy, a movie about bicycle riding. Most people who own and use bicycles are not racing, or training to become faster, regardless of whether or not they intend to race. There is more to bicycle riding than competitive riding. Many more people ride bicycles just for fun, or to get modest exercise, or to enjoy an outdoor activity, or as basic transportation. "Bicycle, The Movie" would be missing quite alot about bike riding if it were focused entirely on racing. Dismissing all non-competitive bike riders as irrelevant would be to the detriment of the environment, to the detriment of public health, and would spell the immediate end to a billion dollar industry.

Why not try to cut the hacky-sackers a little slack? In the long run, if our sport is ever to become a popular, professional sport, we will absolutely NEED fans of the sport (all those people who like to watch professional players without having to be one). Without fans, this game stands no chance of being "big", and those circle kickers are the most likely ones to tune in and watch the pros if we get ourselves on t.v. for more then 4 seconds.

Besides, there is more than one way to enjoy footbag.

they cut themselves enough SLACK as it is!

 just kidding, I'm right there with you, JS. I was trying to explain a similar mentality to Paul yesterday afternoon. I didn't put it as eloquently as that, though.

Yeah, I see your point Jon, however it would be silly for any footbag player to be in the movie about hackysack without properly representing the sport. I mean, even if the director mearly mentioned a blurb about the culture of footbag at the end and showed the proper footage, that would be worth it.

Obviously there are way more people that play hackysack than footbag, but it's because most of them have never heard of it. And there in lies the problem. If a footbagger were to go on there and do a crazy 30 second dropless shred, and mearly be shown as a 'great hackysacker', I think he would be doing a diservice to the sport of footbag.

Edit:

That statement is not reflective of anyone's attitude I've seen regarding footbag, nor something I have ever posted. You probably meant to state something else, but worded it very poorly.

i think its fine to portray hacky sack as the origin of footbag, but even the title of the movie makes it clear that the focus of the movie will be a bunch of guys getting real excited when they all manage to kick it once before it hits the ground. i dont think a movie about hacky sack is such a travesty, the main reason its upsetting is because it would be a massively wasted opportunity.

I know it is brought up all the time, but: Big Add in She's All That? I've heard people say "...that was the first time I saw someone who was so good (at hack), so I looked up "hack tricks" on the web and found footbag.org." Don't you think that every little bit of exposure helps?

If a footbag player can go and show off then have "check out http://www.____.com/org" next to his/her name, woudn't that be a step in the right direction?

yes, showing off any amount of footbag is a step in the right direction, and a great opportunity, but showing kids just booting it around is actually a step backwards.

Because no person outside of this forum knows what shred is about.

I think "Hack !" is a great name for a movie, but I think this movie will suck.

And I thought that any opportunity to expose footbag to a greater audience was supposed to be a good thing

What a bunch of cry babies. You don't like the name of the film, so you want to boycot it?! WTF?

I say get over yourselves and realise this for what it is. YOU CAN POTENTIALLY BE A MOVIE STAR! YOU CAN EXPOSE FOOTBAG.

Like Moxie said... Everyone knows it as hackysack. Do a google search on Hacky sack and what's the first site that comes up?

Did I ever say that i thought the movie was a bad idea. I simply criticized the name choice.
What will they call footbag in the movie? Will the actors be expected to say "hacky sack"? I wouldn't particularly like to do product placement for a company which neither supports nor represents the way we play the game. This film could be a great opportunity for real publicity for footbag in general, if the shredders who participate reflect what they do realistically.

Don't get me wrong though....either way it will only bring more attention to what we love, which is what is important in the end.

Yeah, no one is saying the movie is a bad idea. I was just saying, it's probably best to talk with the director and request that the sport be accurately portrayed. IF this film is somehow seen by a 'large' audience, then it would be foolish not to at least TRY to get SOME accurate info across. I spoke with the director, and he says it's mainly a light-hearted, fictional movie about hackysack. Pete Irish has contacted him, as well as a few others. I have given him my contact info, and he said that he would let me know if he needed help with 'lingo', culture, terminology, etc.

I would say to anyone who wants to be in a movie, go for it. I just think that the person should at least try to educate the people he's working with about a sport that he/she is dedicated to before going through with it, and see if there's some way to represent footbag accurately, even if it only takes up 5 minutes of the movie.

That'd be soo amazing if we're able to get a bunch of real footbag into that thing!!

Doesn't it sounds MAD boring though, the way it is though? A light hearted movie on hacky sack?! great for us, but I definately can't see it going anywhere with anyone else UNLESS there is real freestyle shred in it. I can just imagine the dialoge: "Wow bob! You hit like, eleven times!! You're the MAN!!" ..."Dean!! You hit it almost 9 times! Too bad you hit it wrong... that was really close to 10." I think, if I weren't into footbag, I'd rather go out back and watch my lawn grow. It's a great oppertunity, and nomatter what it will definately help footbag at least a little; and I LOVE that but, honestly... a full length movie about circle kicking?? :?

Doesn anyone know what the basic plot line is? Cuz what I'm imagining is completely rediculous.

Keep it real

I'd love to show off some hack skills in a movie. I think you naysayers need to learn some modified bloughchi :P

There are plenty of tricks you can do that don't involve stalling the bag, even if by jobs it's just a kick you can still make it look good. I can draw a lot more attentin and get more people in a circle just kicking it.. flying tricks, spinning kicks long distance kicks, over the head sole kicks.

I don't think it wouldbe about trying to kick it as much as you can("woohoo 11 kicks").. maybe more about style and enjoyment of a simple sport/game/pastime/hobby/brandname. Fun is fun right?; and kicking is fun. So is freestyle but the movie is not about freestyle. Why is nobody up in arms that net is not going to be portrayed? Wait.. Takraw should be in here too. And shuttlecock. And soccer.

See, if they are going to do some tricks, why not incorperate the better tricks? There is going to have to be a plot in the movie. Nobody is going to watch people in a circle just kick. I just can't imagine what the plot would be like though. This is going to be a movie, not some 5 minute clip.

At the end of the day, it's his film... not ours.
They will portray footbag in any way they choose. With, or without our endorsement.

Be prepared for a stoner hacky slacker film, guys. Because, if that's what the producer is thinking... then that's what he'll make.

Sure, he might chuck a Peter Benchely, and change his tune in the future, but by then...

Just saying (as an eternal pessimist), don't get your hopes up that this will set the record straight. More than likely, it will enforce steriotypes.
