Why do belly buttons smell bad?

I think (= not a really qualified opinion) that it has to do with the fact that you can't clean them out very well. Stuff gets in there and just, well, ferments.

Edit: Okay, okay. I would think it's the same reason that behind my friend's ear (as he was telling me a while back) smells bad. Just a lack of cleaning it?.

It's generally because of sweat build-up.

Some interesting bellybutton information can be found here at the triple J science page, 'the lab'. Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who performed the study, was awarded an Ig Noble Prize for his national survey of bellybutton lint.
