The history behind the tournament itself began long long ago. Most people are too young to remember (including myself) the massive Valentines Day Massacre tournaments that were held in Memphis, TN in the late 80's and early 90's. footbag players at the 89 worlds were shocked the year Kenny Shults & Mag Hughs didn't win doubles champs - if i'm correct they didn't even make it to the finals. Chris Routh and Ken Hamric from Memphis Footworks won the Worlds title, and Routh would lay claim to it again in 1991 Worlds with the help of Jim Caveney. In the late 80's Lee Guenther would host these killer tournaments that included many old school net players and freestylers, including Derrick "funky chicken" Fogle, the greatest footbag player who was never accepted within the ranks of the BAP. You may ask what's the point of the history lesson? Well.... the Massacre is back!

c-fan - i disagree not everything is possible. i may work at a chinese restaurant, play takraw, and listen to mike park (from skankin pickle), yet i'll never truly be asian.
josh - we only have one day for the tournament. i don't think it would be possible to do both singles & doubles within 8 hour time span. we will have singles games, but probably not a singles tournament.
ben - don't pronounce your love so freely. you may scare away all the women that come your way once you get into college.
peter - it's nice that someone remembers. i've posted the event in the net forum 10 weeks in advance and i can only hope for some out-of-state net players reach tennessee. it's difficult enough to get the footworks team away from Memphis. something tells me peter that your words would carry greater weight than my own with the shults.

surface information - it's all indoors
the freestyle area is called the sundeck. it's short carpet surface (length = infinity x width = 15 feet) that has giant windows overlooking the indoor pool and it's elevated about 5 feet above the net courts. if it wasn't for the railing seperating it from the courts it would look like a stage. 4-square will also be on the sundeck. the net area is on the gymnasium courts, boundaries are the green badminton lines which share the same dimensions as a net court. we have two courts reserved so far we may add more depending upon the attendance level. beware the gymnasuim courts are wooden not turf.
c-fan - i'm only 5'7 so i'm not too tall. i've dyed my hair black before, but it only accents my whiteness. i've got a learn chinese cassette for my car; curse those dip thongs - no, not those types of thongs. what else can i do?

I am so there.
I must practice once I get my new bag.
It's my first 32-panel.
So I need to break that in, get my skill back up, and then practice my only 6 add so that I can hit it midstring in the competition.
I think I can do that before Feb. 18
All pending on when I get my bag.
But good or bad, I'm definately there.
What net doubles are there? Open?

if we get enough interest in net we may have a couple divisions: open & novice/intermediate. we may just have a free-for-all with no divisions if there are only one or two novice teams. i'm trying to determine how many trophies to order. we're going to use model plastic hearts as trophies. in biology class they have model human hearts that can be split into two, so you can look at the functions of the circulatory system. the hearts will be mounted like trophies, hence Valentines Day Massacre. as of now, there is not a tournament entry fee, only $5 to get inside the recreation center.

ben is still on his cross-country motorcycle pilgrimage. i'm not sure if we'll be able to find him. those were some amazing trophies he made last time though. speaking of missing links, ed left moved back to Rio on thrusday. he's a great net player capable of slicing the bag with so much spin it was impossible to control. we will all miss his latin heat or samba dance. for those of you who never met him... you may be able to find him "at the carwash".

well, you guys will have plenty of time to brush up on your toe stalls for the big sic 3. i'm sure you'll blow my mind. we'll have justin our grad student give you guys a brief algebra lecture followed by a quiz for those still working on their general requirements. and yes, the tournament credits will transfer to all schools affiliated with the tennessee board of regents. study hard.
