You can train your knees back to its normal strenght but i dont think it would be a good idea to train it up with footbag.ana_ali wrote: You should think once more about it before you take either of them. Thanks to everybody who pmed me advice (or posted here) regarding knee braces.
Jesse: flip pixies haven't hurt me at all. It's the knee on my strong pixie leg that hurts.
Alex: knee braces restrict your range of motion, limiting you to motions that don't hurt you. They also give you extra support, so not as much weight gets placed on the injured areas.
Knee feels very very good today. Still plan on doing pool rehab. Hopefully I will start training tiltless/BOPs on Friday. Must make a point not to rush back into playing.

Knee is making progress. I feel like I've almost completely regained my range of motion, and I no longer am hesitant when I get out of cars, stand up after sitting, etc. No random pain. I no longer feel like I need to be overly conscious about how my leg moves. That said, my leg isn't 100% When I walk, even for a little bit, my right leg gets tired very quickly. I think that during the worst of my injury, my other leg muscles compensated for it. Because of that, my muscles don't feel quite balanced.
I did pool rehab again today and yesterday. I really think it helps. Not only does my knee get exercise in a no-impact environment, but it keeps my stamina up. Running laps in the pool while swinging my arms against the water is a lot more strenuous than it sounds, and I keep at it for long stretches. I probably get more exercise doing my pool rehab than I do in an average 90 minute solo-shred session.
I haven't even kicked a footbag since Sunday. I feel I'm at the most critical stage of my recovery: I feel healed enough to play again, but I'm also at the stage where I'm most likely to re-injure myself. We'll see how I feel when I wake up tomorrow, but if I feel strong enough, I may go for a binary workout: all kicks and toe stalls. If that goes well, I may go for tiltless and clippers on the weekend. I need to be very conscientious about not rushing back too quickly and re-injuring myself.
In bad news, it sounds like I won't get my new g-Units this weekend. I was hoping to get them now, cause I have so much time on my hands that it would have been productive and fun to modify them.

At last!
After 4 days of not even touching a footbag, today (December 16th, 05)I at last felt strong enough to lace up the Guido Units and play lightly. It felt soooooo good to play again, even if just lightly. I played on a nearby basketball court, and made a point to alternate small bouts of kicking with longer periods of shooting. That way I wouldn't overdo it on the footbag tip.
The big news was that I never felt knee pain. I took my time warming up, and I listened to my iPod throughout, to keep me loose and in good spirits. I also played in baggy shorts, in order to limit the difficulty and length of my runs. It all worked out very well.
Obviously, no real "highlights," given the nature of the session. Still, I was surprised to hit a planting mobius midstring. Blurriest bsos was cool too, given my restrictive pants. But those are deceptive, as I mostly shied away from fives. I spent most of the session doing easy 4s followed by a couple BOPs repeat. My hardest/best string of the day had barfly, diving butterfly, blur, pdlo, ducking butterfly, blurry whirl, and ripwalk; all BSOS. Man that felt nice
After playing I ate a banana, had 2 aspirin, drank a ton of water, and stretched extensively for a good 45 minutes. I'm thinking it would be wise to take tomorrow off from kicking, and maybe do pool rehab again. We'll see how I feel tomorrow. Given how worried I was a few days ago about this injury, I feel really thankful and happy that it looks to have been a lot more minor than I feared. Still, I must make a point to take it easy these next couple weeks, and really build my strength back to normal.

Continued rehab
Encouraged by yesterday's session, I decided I'd have another light shred today(December 17th, 05). The knee felt fine this morning, so I decided to put off another pool session til tomorrow. Like yesterday, I played on a basketball court, and spent 65% of my time shooting hoops, and the rest playing footbag. Again I played in baggy shorts, to limit the difficulty and length of my strings, and overall I did a very good job of not pushing too hard at anything.
Despite it being a short session, I had a few small highlights which made me happy. I hit 7 PLOs on my first try, as well as 9 drifters. The drifters especially surprised me, considering how much my shorts get in the way of that trick. I also hit magellan-smear-plo-smear-magellan-plo-dimwalk on my first try. I was going for a drill, but messed up the order mentally. Rather than continue drilling the combo, I messed around with some other stuff, and when I came back to it later in the session, I hit magellan-smear-plo-repeat to dimwalk and a small run with the other dimwalk, within a try or two.
The other big highlight for me was hitting pdlo-dimwalk repeat. That marks the first time I've played out of flip pdlo with a set, and also made me feel like my flip pixie has really made progress. Very happy about that. My spins also felt very good today, which was a nice surprise. I was getting stuff like spinning butterfly to spinning osis midstring, and both spins felt better-than-usual. The link of the day was blurry whirl-pdx whirl- pdx torque; a cute link which I pulled off BSOS!
Cool!
At home I made a point to stretch out again for a long time, and had a banana and lots of water. We'll see how I feel tomorrow, but I really feel like the worst is behind me. Still, best not to rush, cause I'm in no hurry. I think I'll do pool rehab tomorrow anyway.
In other good footbag news: I bought a pair of G-Units off of eBay! It's the first time I've ever bought something on an internet auction... bit of a milestone for me. Including shipping, they cost me $39.99, which is pretty good, considering they are brand new in box. I'll let you know how they are when they get here. God I'm so happy I'm back at footbag

Welcome to Flavortown

I didn't play footbag yesterday, or the day before, so I felt it imperative to get in a session today, December 20th, 2005.
While I didn't play the last couple days, I didn't completely neglect footbag either. I picked up a new pair of insoles, which promise protection for "high impact sports." Sounds like footbag to me. I really should get new insoles every 6 months or so. My last pair were waaaay past due. Footbag is such a cheap sport in general, it really is hard to justify not spending a bit for some leg protection. I'm still using my old metatarsal gel insoles, with the new insoles placed on top.
Two days ago I went swimming to maintain my stamina, and yesterday I did a lot of shin exercises while I was in the car on a day-trip with the folks. This morning, I spent a good half hour stitching up my Guido Units. They hadn't broken again, but they definitely needed some reinforcements. I'm going to be very careful when I mod my new G6s, which hopefully will get here in about a week.
My knee is making progress, but I still am aware I shouldn't push it. I think I played a bit harder than I should have today, but at no point did I do anything that hurt. I played with my mini-Abshire bag for the whole session, and it worked pretty well. I've been adding leadshot to it to make it heavier, but it still requires very precise stalls, since it's still a bit rolly. I think the added precision required will help my game. Takumi always practiced with roll-y bags, so when he played with a kind bag, he'd kick ass.
I started off today's shred by just messing around, and hit a couple things I was happy with. Flurry-dso-dso to start a string. Smear-dso repeat. Alpine legbeater to fog. A cool 6 add torque trick I'd only hit once before.
For some reason, I decided I'd skool Shred30 today. Shred30 used to be by far my worst event ... I still remember my first few goes, back around 2000. It really took me a long time to truly understand the theory of Shred30, and then to start to do well in them. Getting 4th at Worlds this year really felt good, mostly because I knew it wasn't a fluke (I averaged 195 over three rounds), and that I had finally got the hang of it.
My best Shred30 score ever (in comp) was 206. I know I can break that record, so today I worked out a viable, new shred30, and practiced it for most of my session. It starts out with 12 unique four adds, then it has some 3s and 4s mixed where I get my strength back, then a 5-5, then a bunch of ducking and diving 4s, then hopefully a five or two at the end. I had 3 good goes at it, which is pretty good considering I just started practicing it today, and I'm still not in 100% shred shape.
My best run-through would have scored 212.28, and my second best would have scored 210.73. Both had 1 drop a piece; the better score had the drop at the very end, the other had the drop on the 27th contact, then I did 3 more quick unique tricks. At worlds I averaged a little under a drop over three rounds, but my new shred 30 has more easy 4s in it, so even with a drop I should still break 200 hopefully. I think I'll practice my new Shred30 a couple times each session from now on out, so I'll be confident with it next time I have an opportunity to compete in Shred30.

Yesterday and today were so nice. Both days I had solid footbag sessions, followed by good basketball shootarounds at the local court. My jumpshot has been on these last couple days. I love that feeling, when you just can't miss. I was popping 3s, bankshots (on purpose, calling "bank!"), off the dribble, you name it. But since this is my footblog, let's get to the shred.
December 21st, 2005
I've figured out how to play with my iPod on, which really makes solo sessions a lot easier. After a while, I really forget that the iPod is even there, and I just flow. Today I wanted to just go for cool, flowy four add links, but I did work on my Shred30 a little bit too.
I shuffled up the order of my Shred30, which makes it easier to get through the initial 12 tripless. The part in the middle is still a bit tricky, but it's getting better for sure. There are some moves and links in there that I never do (symp pixie to pixie opp osis) which will require less mental energy the more I practice them. My best run-through today felt good. One handcatch (drop) in the middle, but I never felt frazzled and I recovered well. That run-through would have scored 207, which would still be a new record for me. I repeated 2 BOPs, which cost me. It really is so important to max out uniques...ideally there should be no repeats at all if you want to hang around 200 and give yourself 1 drop breathing space.
Overall I played well throughout. Smoke bsos was a highlight. I was probably happiest about starting a string with a real good pdx whirling swirl. That was only my second time ever hitting it, and I was happily surprised to hit it so controlled. Using the AbMini makes those tight dexes so much easier. I had blurriest and darkwalk in the sealing combo. Later in the session, I hit barfly swirl, which is cool because it was maybe my 3rd time ever hitting it, and it ends on the other swirl foot (from pdx ws). I think that paradon swirl-barfly swirl is a combo that I could hit. I'll try it out sometime.
In other good footbag news, it looks like the G-Units I won on eBay have already been sent by Fed Ex. It'd be so sweet if I got them in time for Christmas. I've been a good boy this year, I deserve it

Yikes.
Don't think I'm ready for that link just yet, but it's an idea.
Today, December 22nd 2005 was a good footbag day. When I lived in Japan, I always bought my footbag socks at 100 yen stores (dollar stores). They always had real colorful, thin socks which came just above the heel. They looked cool, and were great for footbag, but they wear out real fast, and when the elastic gets loose, they start to slip around the ankles and interfere a bit with dexes. Normally that wasn't a problem, since I could get them so cheaply and easily. But now that I live stateside, I started to get a bit worried as 2 of my better shred socks became unusable in a week.
I went shopping this morning and was real excited to pick up something like 9 pairs of good, thin ankle socks. I tried out a pair when I shredded today, and they were fantastic. Thin enough that I don't feel restricted, and since they're ankle socks, I don't have to worry about the elastic going. It was a bit weird at first playing in them, since I haven't played in ankle socks in quite some time. My legs seemed really long and skinny... I kinda felt like Super or T-Pak.
The session started real well. I made something like 12 of my first 15 jumpshots, which I took to be a good omen. I tried out paradon swirl-barfly swirl for a bit, but no luck. That's a really hard link...if I expend a lot of energy on the first trick, I get a solid clipper which I feel confident I can barfly swirl from; but I don't have enough energy to go for it, cause I expended too much energy on the paradon swirl. If I do a more midtimey paradon swirl, I have the energy for barfly swirl, but I feel out of position for it. I also feel my barfly swirl is too weak at this point to really get the combo. I sealed one barfly swirl with a small run, but it's still a pretty rare trick for me.
My shred30 practice went really really well today. I didn't drill it too much, and had lots of success with it pretty much straight off the bat. After a couple 1-drop run throughs, I finally hit the whole thing dropless! It's always a thrill when you hit your (planned) Shred30 mistake-free for the first time. I'm pretty sure it's my highest scoring Shred30 ever (counting practice and comp), which I'm proud about.
After getting the Shred30 down, I messed around for a little more, and was pleasantly surprised to hit paradon swirl to ripwalk! I think I've only ever seen one other person step out of a double down swirl before, and it seems like an uncommon link. I decided I'd try and step it up, and after a good 7-8 minutes of drilling, I finally got paradon swirl-blurriest
Hell yeah. Hell yeah
I love you, footbag.
EDIT: My best Shred30 of the day went for 33 tricks, then I figured my 30 seconds was up, so I missed a pdx blender and dropped. Without somebody counting, I'm really not sure when my 30 seconds finished. So I calculated 4 possible scores.
Counting only the first 31 tricks, I would have scored 220.65! Easily a personal best.
Counting the first 32 tricks, I'd score 223.03
Counting the first 33 tricks: 229.09!
Counting the first 33 tricks, and factoring the final drop: 225.88
Realistically, I probably got 32 contacts in. But it could be more or less. I'm also comforted that I dropped the pdx blender because I already felt time was up. In real comp, I probably would adjust my final tricks based on the time count. Calculating the various possible scores was also helpful for me, since it clearly shows me that at the end of a Shred30, its best to be conservative. A drop at the end is as bad (statistically) as a drop in the middle.

My new G-Units arrived in the mail yesterday. $40 on eBay, new in the box, not bad at all. Modding them was a breeze. WAY WAAAAAY easier than modding mesh lavers. I used an exacto knife, and didn't make any mistakes. With mesh Lavers, i always made at least one accidental puncture/cut of fabric, but the G6 mod is a ton easier.
I got the black models with the green/yellow/red stripe on the side. The whole shoe is black, and the ugly stripe is easily blacked out with marker. I'll upload a pic tomorrow if I get a chance. Initially I thought the black/red/white G6 was the best-looking, but now I actually think the all-black model is sexier. There is one small difference I noticed between the two: the all-black G6 has felt around the toe box, whereas the other models have leather. I don't think it'll make a structural difference, but I was surprised.
I played in the new G6s today, and they worked out fine. I consider them completely broken in, and that's after a single session. I spent most of the day drilling my Shred30, which is an easy way to put a lot of adds on the shoes. I toyed with the order some, which makes it a bit easier to hit I think. I took out the most awkward link, and put my duck/dive section in the middle, so I can space out my energy better. I didn't have a very good session, but I still managed to hit my Shred30 dropless once, albeit with a mistake towards the end. Because of the mistake, I only ended up hitting 27 tricks (26 unique, no drop), but in comp I think I'd compensate when I heard the countdown. That run would have scored 204, which is pretty good given that it was short. Other than that Shred30, the only highlight was hitting drifter-ss symple swirl repeat for my first time. Mostly, I just wanted to get a feel for the new shoes this session, and I accomplished that.
I was a bit slow today, and felt completely wiped out after my shred. I think it's cause I donated blood yesterday, and did pool rehab/swimming. My college roomate is visiting me this weekend, so I figured today may be my last chance before the new year to shred.
I think I'm coming down with a bit of a throat cold, so I may not play much these next few days. I'll try and play on New Year's though. My life is in a big transitional period, and its nice that I have footbag as this positive constant that I can lean on. What better way to usher in the new year than by playing?
Happy holidays everybody.
Happy holidays everybody.
A little bummed today... the 5 day auction on my 2nd pair of G6 g-units finished, and I got outbid while I went out. There was like 5 hours left, and i thought it was in the bag, but I got outbid by a dollar.
Luckily, the shoes are from a shoe store, so another pair is back on auction. Still, sucky. I still have a cold, but I was bummed about the g-unit thing, so I had a session.
I had a good Shred30 run through on my first try. 27 contacts, 25 uniques...I get the feeling that I'm playing fast enough that I have extra time left. I should probably stick in some easy 3s towards the end. If I get a 5 second countdown at the end, I should be fine.
I also hit a new trick, which was unexpected. Nuclear eclipse, first try! I also hit nuclear ss eclipse, using the other nuke set and same eclipse. Had a good look at phoenix-fog repeat. I think I'll hit it next session pretty easily.
Hopefully I win this next g-unit auction.
I guess I should be happy that its a shoe store, and it wasn't the last pair. I also hope I beat this cold by New Years. I really want to ring in the new year with a solid shred.

I gotta admit, it was pretty hard keeping my New Year's plans under wraps, but it was worth it. I made a secret trip out to the East Coast for the holidays so I could hang out with NYFA and my sister, and I squeezed in a surprise visit to the Rochester Jam in the middle. It's been such a good trip, its hard to know where to start. My last blog entry was actually of a session I had with Stan and Bruce of NYFA, where lots of funny stuff went down, but I couldn't mention it for fear of giving away that I was back on the East Coast
I'm gonna do a super-long write up of the Rochester Jam when I get back to Arizona, but my shorthand version of it is: it rocked. It rocked real hard. I was very happy with how I competed. I didn't set a new personal record in Shred30 like I'd hoped to, but I still broke 200. That's only my second time ever breaking 200 in competition, and I didn't choke, so I can't complain. I also felt satisfied with my efforts in Weird One, Sick One, and Sick Three, managing to hit something in each event, despite not preparing anything ahead of time. I was also happy with how I played in circles throughout the event. I played close to the top of my game and had lots of fun. I got to kick off the new year in a circle with Jorden and Flash, both who are in my top 5 or 6 favorite players in the world. The party was fun, I hung out with lots of old friends, and even the ride to and from Rochester was fun. To top it all off, I got home and found out I won my G-Unit G6 auction on eBay, so I should get a new pair delivered to my door within the week, for a paltry $40!

Ken it was super cool meeting you. I'd wished I had more of a chance to talk to you about footbag. Maybe I'll see you at another jam. !!!

Ken, I almost bid on your G-Units on eBay! My friend was bidding on shoes for me and I was going to bid on the size 7.5 ones, but I realized that it was you who was bidding on them (and I remembered reading in your blog that you were hoping you would win your auction) and changed my mind and bid on the size 8 shoes instead. I won too!! I'm so excited to try these shoes out!

Dude it was so sick hanging out with you and even shreddin with you a little. Your comp entries were disgusting. You are an awesome dude in person. I can't wait to jam out with you again!Skippy! wrote:Ken it was super cool meeting you. I'd wished I had more of a chance to talk to you about footbag. Maybe I'll see you at another jam. !!!

I made it back to Arizona OK, but I had to run to make a connecting flight, and that gave me shin splints. Running in boots with a heavy bag isn't fun, much less good for you. I had a very light session today just for giggles, and played in baggy clothing to even further limit myself. No real highlights, but it was fun just playing for the hell of it. No pressure to practice Shred30 or anything like that. I did hit one cute drill though: smear-muted ss whirl-dlo-repeat. I liked that. I also hit dyno-pdx torque, and footed the flip like 4 times, but couldn't hand-catch it. Whatever.
Hopefully I'll get around to doing a full write-up of Rochestah... I'm thinking tomorrow.
