Well, this will be my first footbloggy blog. I told myself I'd wait til I could land blur and blizzard frequently, and I think another time I said I'd wait til I'm guiltless to start a blog, but today was fairly inspirational so I figured I'd just go ahead. And, given the title of this blog, it has a purpose, and when I have finished my quest, I will finish this blog.

Some of you may know me from here, others know me from the few tournaments I've attended, and some of you know me as that guy that is ALWAYS in footbag chat. :P Haha. Yep, that's me. I like being in there a lot because my connection is always on, so even like when I'm at work at least my screen name is in there. It sorta keeps the room alive ya know?

I've hacked for a long time, but just got into freestyle I wanna say May of last year. So I guess about 8 months now. I was walking home from work and saw a guy playing in the park. I went up to him and he had mentioned footbag, and he was doing some cool moves, mainly legovers, mirages, clippers, I think he through a dada curve in there. His name was Brian Beun and he said he used to compete in the 80s. He said that he hadn't played in the park in some time, but thought about trying to get a group of guys together every Thursday to play. I was really excited because I'd vaguely heard of footbag before, and I'd also occasionally seen guys do it in our hack circles from time to time and always thought it was too hard and it looked awesome, but I could never do that.

So we started meeting every thursday after work, but I'd usually play every day, or at least 3-4 days a week. Even though this guy started the Thursday sessions, I was the one who lasted the longest. He had a wife and kids, and the couple other guys I played with had demanding jobs. One of the guys we played with JP, became a decent shred/drinking buddy, and he was better than me for a while, but I pretty much zoomed past him when he stopped playing as frequently.

One day I was thinking "Hmm, I'd really like to get more into the footbag scene." That evening after work, I saw some guys playing in Dupont Circle, in MY spot! The thing is though, they were way better than anything I'd ever seen. They were Peter Irish, Matt Cross, and Nate Linscott. Apparently they were warming up for the Summer Funtastik Tournament. Needless to say, they blew my mind, and THEY were impressed that some guy came running up with Lavers on and wanted to play!

Pete invited me out for sushi and beer, and I basically just sat with them in awe, and tried to be charming and funny so as not to come off like a
starstruck noob. Then I said to Pete, "Wow you must be doing pretty well from all the endorsements from footbag." "Nope, the sport's still pretty unknown here in the States." "But you're a multiple World Champion!"

That night it dawned on me that this sport needs a serious marketing campaign. For someone like Peter Irish, a legend in the sport not to be able to make a living at it professionally.. I just couldn't grasp it at the time. That night they invited me to Funtastik, and of course I went. I had the best time, and met some awesome people who were all extremely good. Everybody was friendly, and willing to give me tips on my game.

Well, that's about it. Pete and I still play once in a while because he lives about 25 min away. I still play every single day. I've reached the level of tiltless, and honestly I've made footbag a huge part of my life.

Okay, fast forward to today. I played outside for the first time in months!! Oh it was so much fun. I was just loving the fresh air, and all the people walking by and telling me how cool it was. Yay! Another reason I decided to start the blog is today's session was pretty decent, and I just had one of those 'I'm a footbagger' experiences. It's always neat to feel that way. Like, you know that you're a part of something, and that you do something you love and are passionate about. And you can tell other people that you are a footbagger. Okay those last 3 sentences were wicked redundant. That's how I am sometimes. Kinda like Derreck Zoolander. Moving on...

So the day went well, but one thing that was neat was a photographer stopped and took some really good pics and he said I'd be on tomorrow's edition of 'The Examiner' which is a free local paper in Washington DC. No article or anything, I think just a captioned photo. Still kinda cool. I'll link it tomorrow if it ends up going in for real. Other than that, just worked on my dreaded left, the main reason for this blog. And the highlight of the day, was I hit ducking butterfly!!!

Friday the 13th part 13:

Well, thursday was cool. I ran into this guy that I hadn't seen in years cuz he moved out to Santa Cruz, Cali. We had a great time, and hung out with a couple of other guys and drank and reminiced about old times. It was really a lot of fun. I talked to him about footbag, and he was like 'Oh man, people play hackysack all the time out in Cali! Then I showed him 100 Bars and one of Jorden's videos and he was like whoah!

I showed him a couple of strings of my own, and he was super-impressed with that too. Anyway, we had a great time and maybe I'll go out to Santa Cruz and check out the scene. At least now I know I have a place to crash!

Gameplay wise, had a decent couple of days. Worked on Sick 1 and 3 for the online comps, but really only got the Sick 1 down, and had some trouble hitting my sick 3. How the hell do you hit anything out of whirl anyway? haha.

Good news is I hit egg beater today. That was really cool. It's funny cuz after hitting it, it didn't seem as hard as I'd been thinking it was. That was a lot of fun. Not much else I guess. Just still California Dreamin on such a winter's day (Although it's been in the 60's all week, thanks George!)

I like how it's perfectly normal to double and triple post in your own blog. Haha. I'm pretty happy with how my game is progressing right now. It's neat that I'm hitting some of the stuff that I'd not expected to hit so soon. I guess I've been playing for a while, but it seems like some moves are just coming to me easily now. But as I was gazing at Flipsider for the 10th time today I realized for the 10th time this week that I'm just going to become more lopsided if I don't get this left working. It'd be sweet to get to the point where some guys are. Where they skool a move, and then they nail it flipside soon after.

Sick 3 is sorta counter-productive toward my flipside goals as well, since all of my sick moves are on strong side. I know, you say that I could just incorporate a flipside move by skooling it specifically for the Sick3. But flip's still so weak, it would take me weeks to skool a move on that side. And so the saga continues...

Anyway, I was thinking if anyone happens to read this and wants to contribute their own experience mastering their left foot, feel free. Like how long did it take? What type of drills did you do to accomplish it? Can you hit most moves both sides equally or BSOS?

I'm still trying to master my left, it's gotten 300% better in the 4 1/2 months I've been drilling it... went from no flip fairy set or flip double switch over to hitting them about 60% of the time. I think that's a long time though you could probably get your flip down faster than that. Still no flip paradon, hippy flip atomic is coming kinda fast now that I am practicing taps (should have it down in another 2 weeks plus the 2 days i've been schooling it).

The more you drill your flip, the faster it should come... set a number of attempts for tricky moves on your flip (ie.50 blurs, 100 around the worlds,50 bubbas....).

I neglected my infinity until about a month ago.. I really regret it :( Don't make the same mistake, get that infinity dialed asap!

When are you gonna post some pics of your recent bags?

Okay I'll elaborate. Had an AWESOME time shreddin with BIZZLE and DCRyda. Plenty of hirsuit to be had by everyone. Mrs. B was supercool too and made us hash browns and eggs and toast. I shoulda stayed for the burgers and hot dogs though..........But I had to jet. Next time!

Seriously those burgers and dogs looked good. I don't know how to describe me hanging out with Josh and Dave. It was just awesome and I beat Josh in Tekken 5 like 1 time out of 20. Dave's game was disgusting with Nemesis BSOS. Josh was actually superfun to watch play. I'd never really seen him shred so it was really cool. I played my normal game I guess, mostly 2 adds, throwin in a whirl or drifter here and there. But I got some awesome skooling from one of the best in the game. Then I decided to go all flipside from here on out til I get better. And I'll just use Sick 3 to do strongside stuff.

While in that flip-only mode I hit mirage to infinity a few times which is pretty big for me flip. I hit some other cool combos like mirage>butterfly>clipper mirage, stuff like that. But just in general my flip clipper's gettin stronger, and butterfly is coming together nicely.

We had a sick time hangin out. Josh invited some kids over to his brother's place but it was like small with a little beer drinkin and footbag golf with the table. Haha. Then we stayed up all night lunchin out on stuff. I had an insane time just hangin out, and I can't wait to do it again.

I wanna plan an informal jam up in Manhattan as the weather gets warmer in spring. Uhm, that's it I guess for now. I'll keep ya posted on the left!
