One way tickets for that cheap would be incredible! Is it possible to find that rate for the way back??
Classes start next week, which means that the bus that goes Geneseo-Rochester is back. Time to revive the sunday session!! Can you guys shred this weekend? That would be awesome, as I've barely played since New Years.
actually im going out to kick while theres still light... ill finish posting soon

hahahahaha.
That figure is for round trip.

Once I buy mine, I'll post where they came from. I just need to get the cash together first... anyone want to buy my guitar from worlds last year? or my acoustic guitar / mic amp (super gig machine)? reasonably priced!!! PM for more details!

First off, I want to say that I thought the event went pretty well overall. Competition didn't drag on too long, so competitors spent the majority of the tournament playing for fun, and not worrying about comp. The venue was fine, not slippery, decently lit, good music, and a crowd that was into it. The prizes were good, and registration was cheap. Free water and snacks on Day 2, and free Red Bull on Day 1 were also good. All that said, there were a few things that could have been run better.Matt Cross wrote: Also, I'm interested in criticisms of my event
so let me know what I can change to make everyone happier at the next event.
Objectively, I think I was the attendee who was hurt the most by the problems in the jam, and even so, I had a killer time. That should indicate that the problems were mostly minor.
OK, I know you've touched on some of these, but I'm going to be complete.
1. Post the order of events, and the order of competitors, on a sheet of paper somewhere in the room. The sound system wasn't very good, and it wasn't completely clear to me the order of events, or the order of competiton. The judging table looked really busy too, so I didn't want to bother you guys with questions. Maybe next time you could jot the event order, and the competitor order on a sheet of paper, and post it somewhere so people could check it whenever. I think I was warming up for Sick3 right before Shred30, or vice versa, but thankfully I was a late seed in the event, so I had time to adjust.
2. Assign minor tasks to other footbaggers Even the most talented MC has trouble running the mic, keeping track who's next, calling tricks in realtime, writing down combos, and keeping track how many turns somebody has left. There were lots of footbaggers present who didn't compete (Stan, Bruce, Jorden, etc) who can keep track of things like a stopwatch, or what was hit, etc. Scot's Shred30 score was messed up because the time wasn't kept properly, and I only received 6 tries for Sick Trick, instead of 7. This sort of error can add stress to competitors, and is really easily avoided.
3. Have two teams of people count Shred. In my personal experience, Shred is best calculated with 2 people. I think I'll write a how-to article about that sometime soon. But yeah, at a tourney like this, there are enough qualified people that you can have 2 independent teams check scores. With 2 qualified people, it doesn't even take that long. I remember the night of the party, I stumbled across the people scoring Shred30. I looked at the sheet with the add counts for everybody's string (4443544 etc), and just by glancing at my sheet, I saw an error: they counted a butterfly as a clipper. Based on how the shred formula works, an error like that can have around a 4 pt difference, which can be very significant if the scores are close.
At Rochester, Kovac's score was off by 15 pts, and Flash's was off by 18. This affected the results for the tourney. Sure, it's not a super-prestigious tourney (Worlds, etc), nor was it big prize money (only $25), but it's still a very significant error.
4. Make the schedule clear ahead of time. The first day of the tourney, I was under the impression that we'd shred until 1 am, then go to Matt's house to party. Lots of other people shared this impression. I donated $10 the first night, cause I thought we'd be there all night. When we learned that we had to be out by 11, I know lots of people were taken by surprise.
These are my biggest complaints, but like I said before, I still thought it was a very good tournament. That said, a few minor, easily-made changes, and your next tournament will be even better. I greatly look forward to it, and if I am at it, I'll definitely help out with whatever I can.
Thanks again Matt.

had my first shred at Fredonia today, I had a 100 minute solo session at the gym. I practiced muted spinning clippers on both sides today, and it helped me hit vortex both sides again, and whirlwind on one side
I hit vortex 5 times on 1 side, one side on the other, and whirlwind twice on my good side. I think muted spinning clipper is going to help my game a lot. i hit osis> pdx drifter with a few repeats, that was cool. Superflies were feeling strong as well. all in all I felt strong. I wrapped both my knees. my right knee was a little sore as my session ended, but I think with stretching and wrapping and ibuprofen, I can get it under control. Fun session

day 2 of fred shred, I played for an hour or so in the lounge here at the dorm. I demo'd freestyle for some of my dorm mates, they were blown away! and I did good strings each time, with shuffle, ducks, spins, and a few 5s! The girls who were watching the front counter in the dorm thought it was awesome, and I think one of them liked me.
piiiiiiiiimp.... hahaha, footbag gets all the ladies!!
My solo sessions have a lot of breathing time, so it wasn't too intense. I have trouble keeping the intensity up when I'm playing alone, but it's also more condusive to drilling... I worked on my muted spinning clippers a bunch more today. The flip vortex was feeling a lot closer. I didn't play long enough to push myself and hit them today, but the muted spinning clippers are helping. I just get dizzy so quickly and I can't drill them again and again and again like I'd like. Blurriest is starting to feel like a really comfortable trick. Paradox drifters were really tight today. I tried doing them with a small, just above the waist set, a hard hip turn towards the bag with the knee pointed in, and a hard hip turn back the other way for the dex / catch. It worked perfectly! That's my new way of doing pdx drifter. What else... Worked on repeating symp whirls both sides, but I didn't want to stress it too hard. I want this knee problem to heal up... I'm going to stretch my IT band more in a few minutes.
I need to find money so I can buy my plane tickets soon
wish me luck...
So, anyone kicking in Rochester? Or am I going to have to just blow you all out of the water next time I come back?

haha funny funny Matt
. Paul fell off the face of the earth.. havent heard from in a week or more and he wasn't at the last sunday shred. I'm sure chris is being chris and shredding everyday. And me... it winter, not the friendliest time for footbag, and still have lots of work to do.
Spring is coming soon, then its a different story!
Good work on all the vortex, whirlwind, yadayada SWEET stuff you have been hitting.

Thats the exact way i picture PDX drifter matt. Last solo sess i worked on them a bunch and got it BSOS for the first time. My flip used to be soooo horrible, but latley they have been feeling more and more comfortable. i think its because i've been trying to hit alot more flip drifters, vortex and mobius. My strong side has become fairly consistent. a really fun link to do with pdx drifter is spinning osis>pdx drifter, from torque too is really cool

AFter 10 minutes of sorting though some old footbag videos I decided I'd have a lil solo session. Started out just drilling the crap out of mirage, fairy, ATW both ways, and illusions. Then I turned elsewhere.
New stuff:
stampede bs
FS legbeater bs
FS atomsmasher bs
witchdoctor > handcatch > flip witchdoctor
FS atomic reverse whirl (2nd try)
BOPaliscious
but>but>but>but> pdx mirage > but (rpt x3) > ss but > osis > pdx mirage (rpt x3) > but > osis (rpt x3) > but > but > but > but > pdx mirage > but > drop
darkwalk > ducking butterfly > ducking pdx mirage (rpt)
phoenix > zulu ps mirage BS (first try strong, 3rd try flip)
pixie symple butterfly > FS blur (rpt)
fs ripwalk > full symp sidewalk (rpt) I like this one a lot... pretty hard
pixie stomping DLO
i like that one
overall.... I'm HAPPY, but i didn't get the last combo i was working on
maybe next time
No sunday session for me this weekend.. I'm headed home, probably wont be back until after 5 sunday.

I havent totally fallen off the face of the earth, but i havent been playing lately. not too long before new years i rolled my ankle again and my right knee has been troublesome in everyday life so im trying to let my body recooperate a bit. the last two weeks of school have been really intense as well and i havent been doing much but working in the studio. ive kicked a little here and there, but no serious sessions in shorts or anything.
chris, you should come down tomorrow afternoon around 5, i have class till then, but there is a potluck at my friend kerrin's in the evening and then footbag sunday, ill call you tonight about it.

Matt, you're just gonna have to blow us all out of the water
Ryan, I'd like to do that. A nice big session in TO would rule. Let's all work out a weekend. Especially one that is bearable for all of us students.
Paul, sounds like fun and I'd usually be down with it, except I already have plans for saturday night. They're skippable, but since its the first weekend here after everyone moved back into town, I don't want to ditch people. Definitely let me know in the future, as Rochester is usually far more entertaining than Geneseo.
Speaking of Geneseo... shall I host another jam here sometime in the spring/beginning of summer? Would you guys prefer it to be while school is in session or not? The major differences are that we'd probably be able to get a decent sized party (parties?) going at my house if there were students still living here, but then I would have to cut the weekend shorter, and my roomates would all be here, which means no extra rooms. But then again, we'd be able to show off to students on campus. Of course, last year it was at a time when there was no school and nobody in town, and an empty house. Did that work for everyone?
Aric! sick! Especially the long BOP string (how many contacts is that? Im not sure about where the repeats apply.), and also everything in that whole second group is mind blowing.
I hardly played at all for the first half of January, but this week I have been getting back up to speed.
-Broke my matador record on one side, it stands at 10, and still 8 flip. Soon we're gonna have a new contender for Lon's footbag record list. Wach out Johnny and Tuomas!!!
-Today I hit blurry whirl>blurry drifter bsos
-string with 3 barflies both sides
-roughly 30 ducking clippers
that is all

Fred shred, day 3.
I played outside one of the main buildings on campus today, demo'd some freestyle for some hack enthusiasts, and shredded pretty well. I didn't use ibuprofen today, just wrapped my knee, stretched it, and went easy on it when it was starting to hurt, and the session went well. Hopefully, it's on it's way to a recovery. I hit whirlwind first try for the hack players, and I think I've got some interest for my club.
I used my chris miller footbag today, and it completely died. a few days ago, I noticed some small holes, and today a few of them ripped wide open. The material broke in so quickly, I can't help but think that was the problem. I wonder how the rest of his bags are doing... I can't wait to try another one, I liked this one a lot, but it only lasted 3 weeks. Oh well.
I'm looking forward to playing this weekend. Eric O'Meara, who used to take my footbag class in Rome NY, goes to school here at Fredonia, so I think he's going to join Fred Shred. He played with me today. He needs some proper shoes, but he'll do well.

had my first session in weeks last night at about 1 am. warmed up with some easy stuff, and almost 3 or 4 strings in i was doing bops easily.
i started practicing individual tricks and worked drifter for a while, strong and flip. strong vortex felt good, and so did paradox drifter. i hit diving clipper>paradox drifte first try. i was really happy with that one. diving clipper vortex took a few tried but it too felt good. a bunch of really easy controlled spins out of butterfly which has been a huge hole in my spins.
ducking butt>spinning butt both sides was nice too.

ok im thinking of hosting the Geneseo Jam on the weeked after graduation.
Although it would be cool, it would not make sense to host a jam while classes are in session, as I want this one to be bigger than last year and I won't have the room to host otherwise. Everyone should be able to stay at my place. Otherwise, how am I supposed to cook for everyone?
So, classes/graduation take place on the weekend of May 13. So plan on the weekend after that. That's May 27-28-29.
I plan on this event costing $0, as every event should. SO COME, or else i hate you.

Jack Keller and I have already begun working on Spike & Shred 2. We should make some public annoucements soon. But even though we're not up to that point just yet, I thought I'd remind you that the Spike and Shred will go down on Memorial Day weekend. That is, May 27, 28, 29.
You can do what you want on Memorial Day weekend, but we've got our plans, our bike race, and our town sponsoring the event, and we're gonna do it up even better than before. It'll be a shame if you can't make it.
So, when was that Geneseo Jam again?

Oh, and, by the way, you might want to double-check your calendar, 'cause if you're graduating on May 13, the weekend after that is May 20 and 21, not May 27, 28, 29.So, classes/graduation take place on the weekend of May 13. So plan on the weekend after that. That's May 27-28-29.
