I suck at footbag...but I'm trying to get better, I swear!

Post by Nitrox »

Been playing for about 3 months, with a 2 month break in the middle...
But I'm definetly getting way into it now for the past few weeks, been playing every day for 30min-1hour

Here's what I can do...
Getting decent at kicks, I can usually go 15+ and often 25+ or so
Alternating toe stalls around 10-15 usually, though I still don't have that bounce down. Same strength on both sides

Strongside:
Inside stalls - About 6/10 with proper sets (I still have trouble with where to hit it on my foot, I usually hit them around the 3rd eyelet, close to the toe...is that wrong?)
Outside stalls - About 4/10 with proper sets
ATW - Can get them about 9/10 and can hit around 5-6 in a row pretty realiably
Legover, same as ATW (strongside only)
Clippers - I can hit the clipper about 5/10 but it's only a proper set about 2/10, the other times it usually flies in front of me

Weakside:
Inside stalls - About 4/10 with proper sets
Outside stalls - About 6/10 with proper sets (don't ask me why i'ts more than my strongside, heh)
ATW - About 7/10, usually 2-3 in a row
Legover - 4/10 (Alternating legovers I can usually hit 2 in a row, sometimes 3)
Clippers - I hit the clipper about 2/10 and 1/10 or so have the proper set

Can't hit mirages, fairies, pixies, or illusions to save my life

So that's pretty much it
For my sessions I usually warm up with about 5-10min of kicking
Then work on the basic stalls for a while, then dexes, then clippers

After a while of that I work on the strings, of which I totally suck at
Best I've been able to hit was clip > toe > atw > legover - and I doubt I'd be able to do it again if asked

So...yea, that's where I'm at
I recently bought some spenco crosstrainer insoles for my lavers, and ordered a 32p from a stitcher here which should hopefully arrive in a few weeks (I love buying myself presents)

I was wondering if there's certain drills or strings to practice that'd help my game at this level, or if I should just school each trick seperately, or both. Any kind of advice (not really looking for individual trick advice, but general this-sort-of-thing-helps-your-overall-game-advice) is very much appreciated!

Thanks

Practise ATW, Legover and Mirage solid both sides, then you've got three (or six, both sides) different dexing tricks - then you can really go drilling.

What I like to do is practice a trick for 5 minutes straight.... like I do my weakside clippers, dropping the bag from chest level and stalling it. I usually do two 5 minute sessions of those a day. The first 2 days I landed it like 2 out of 10 times, but after a week, I hit it 9 out of 10 times, and I still do those everyday, because clippers are one of the, if not the most important trick. If I were you, I would practice one trick for 5 minutes non stop, like the clipper. And most important, learn a move on both sides. Hope this helped you a little.

Don't worry. You are on at good pace.

1. After a month, I still can't kick for shit. So Good job for that.
2. Proper terminology is Strongside and Flipside. They don't always refer to the same foot. They vary for each trick/move.
3. I still can't hit a clipper. Ever.
4. Try doing a pixie, either as set or downside. I found that when I did it downside, it was basically a reverse legover and catching it on op toe. It is definitely helping my mirages, despite the fact that I fail 90+% of them anyway. Pixie set also helps, especially with cementing the ATWs and allows you to do get more adds. Feels really good if you can do a pixie legover or mirage.
5. For the bouncing, I was offered to try to stay on my toes while trying op toe > op toe > op toe, etc. Don't allow your heel to touch the floor. So far, I am still not very bouncy, but it helps you get that extra force up and cushion when the bag comes down.
6. For string length, so far I found that the reasons I am not getting it are that I can't set reliably and that I can't hold my balance after one trick well enough to provide a reliable set for the next. Try keeping up with those legover > op legover > op legover, etc. So far I did around 7 in a row maximum and getting better. This is actually working well with the bounciness idea. Try doing op legovers while standing on your toes. In order to getthe hop/bounce you need to be able to do tricks with it, not just toe stalls.

I'd say that you are ahead of me as of now. Pretty much everything is possible if you try it long enough. Including those clippers which just aren't working for me.

Yeah until you get a good few 2 add moves down pat, you should work on those before drilling. My first was the mirage > ss mirage (or kinda pixie it without putting the set foot down straight off, then back again. This works your toes and gives you something to do when your clipper reps get boring / frustrating.
