footbag again?

Post by Rieferman »

Well, I haven't kicked a bag in maybe a year or so. Body hurt alot from kicking a style that isn't really consistent with what my body wants to do naturally. Wasn't really "feeling" the community the way I was used to either. Whatever..... there were lots of reasons.

But, in my new town where we just bought a house (the same town where I initially, with Dave Sanchez's and Bob Green's help made Philly Footworks big) I've gotten the itch again a little. So, I called the YMCA where I'm a member (the same YMCA that sponsored the 'Philly Open' two years in a row way back when.. anyone remember those?) to see if I can use their arobics (sp?) room for a practice room here and there during the week. Then, I was getting my mountain bike tuned up and the people there recognized me (they were also previous 4 time sponsors of my events). They invited me to some events they're having this summer to show some Hacky off.. I met some cool guys there today too, so that's a bonus. Then, I was shooting hoops at the YMCA tonight and I bumped into Brian (of the Brian and Charlie father/son duo that used to play with us 4 years ago) and he had Daryl footbags with him.. We're getting together Tuesday night to play!

Crazy. Might be playing again. I'm no Vasek but I like to think I had some skill back in the day. I'm curious to see if any of the skill is there still. Am even more curious to see what it's like to play with such a completely different mind set as I have now (it's not "how can I show my footbag friends how I've improved".. instead it's "how can I have fun with this game in a pressure-free way?"). Without the urgency of trying to add something new before the next event, will I develop my footbag play differently? I have many questions.

Ok, thanks for listening. No replies needed/expected. Just wanted to share.

Bob Riefer!

Thanks for sharing. The news that you are possibly coming back into footbag literally brought a smile to my face. As for the Philly Opens, I definitely remember them. I just got back stateside after 3.5 years in Japan, and the shirt I was most excited to be reunited with was my Philly Open 2 shirt. I still use the wallet I won at that tourney with Yacine in doubles intermediate net!

I'm also real curious about how this turns out, I do hope you post occasionally and let us know. Personally, i went through a similar situation, where I left footbag for 6 months and came back with a similar attitude transformation. Pretty soon, I was playing way better than I ever did with the old attitude, and I'm still getting enjoyment from footbag 5 years after the switch! I hope you have similarly positive results.
Much love.
